We plan to use screencast to host public company promotion videos and private educational videos. For public videos, we were wondering if you have plans to add SEO capacities such as meta title and meta description to videos so that they are indexed by search engines. Are these functionalities that you may add in the near future?

Hi Helen - thank you for your input. My question was not directed to SEO services in general - my company offers affordable SEO with a money-back guarantee for achieved positions on Google.

As you may know, SEO services are divided into two stages: 1) ON-PAGE SEO and 2) OFF-PAGE SEO.

The focus of ON-PAGE SEO is the website: web pages are optimized for specific key phrases to help indexing robots understand what a page is about. This is achieved by creating a certain key phrase density - the number of times a specific key phrase appears on the page. Meta descriptions such as meta title tags and meta description are other important parts of ON-PAGE SEO.

Once Google's indexing robot understands what a page is about tries to assess the importance of that webpage for the specific set of key phrases it contains. The more important a webpage is for a specific keyword, the higher its ranking on Google. The robot assesses the importance by "counting" the number of times other websites point (or "link") to that webpage. These are the backlinks you have been referring to. There are other important things that are taken ito account by Google's indexing robot to assess the importance of a website. Webpages with lots of links pointing to them obtain a higher PageRank.

What is important to remember is that sites that have a better ON-PAGE optimization show up before those with a higher PageRank in the search results page (SERP). This means that On-PAGE optimization is crucial in obtaining better positions on Google.

It seems that Screencast.com does not offer the possibility to add meta tags such as meta title and meta description to individual videos. This would mean that it is impossible to do propoer ON-PAGE SEO for videos posted on Screencast.com - which in turn would make it difficult to ranke high on Google for videos posted on Screencast.com.

We are currently looking at screencast.com to post educational videos about various topics that were produced with Camtasia. Hence my question put to Screencast about future plans to add a minimum set of SEO tools to Screencast.com so that our educational videos would get better exposure.

Stephan--We looked into this, and while we do provide the ability to add keywords to videos, we're not currently doing a great job at getting those keywords indexed by according to Google's current standards. We have meta HTML fields for OpenGraph, Dublin Core, and iTunes keywords.

The bottom line is that we don't currently have the tools to provide you with great on-page SEO options to get indexed by Google.

Currently, the best way to get a good page rank with Google on a Screencast.com video is to embed Screencast.com videos on a page where you do have access to the appropriate meta tags.

The Screencast.com team is definitely working on understanding the best way to provide SEO to our customers, but we don't have a timeline on when those kind of tools might be developed.
