I thought this would work but I see a minus sign instead of a plus sign and no copy of the object occurs. If I click on another object I do see a + sign appear but dragging it does not produce a copy. What am I doing wrong. The object is some text I just produced.

Thanks for your suggestion Dubie, but I already tried that and for me ctrl in advance of click on a Snagit object brings up a colour pick gadget which remains when I drag, but if I click on the selected Snagit object in advance of pressing the ctrl key I just drag the object, no copy of it. The same if I just hit ctrl without holding it down so I think I have tried all possibilities? Or maybe one has to turn this capability on in settings somewhere?

Are switching to the move tool first?

You need to select the object first with the move tool.
Than hold the CTRL key and click on the object and drag.

Move tool! That's the key, thanks!

In fact, because the move tool is not among the default few visible tools, but tucked all the way down one up from the bottom in further tools, and especially because it seems to be possible to move objects without even initiating the move tool, this leads a new user of this version to think there wouldn't be one, so I wasn't aware of it. Very pleased to have found it.

Perhaps Techsmith might consider adding move tool to the main list so as not to confuse new users of this version of Snagit. As far as I remember I loved version 7 for many years, but not 8 after extensive changes and I moved away after version 7 being incompatible with Windows 7 but glad to be back now, despite this learning curve. I know I should go through all the training instructions but have been short of time.
