smartfocus not working?

Using Camtasia Mac 2.9.1, when I drag/drop the smartfocus effect onto my timeline, nothing seems to happen. I've looked at the tutorial, and at the help topic on smartfocus, AFAIK I'm doing it right...My steps:
1. record at 1280x720 using the camtasia recorder
2. save, then shrink the canvas slightly - this is required, right?
3. click/drag smartfocus down to the video track

Expected - I'll see edit icons on the track indicating smartfocus animations, and when I play the track I'll see zoom in and out

Actual - I see no edit markers, and I see no zoom and pan when I play.

What am I missing?

Hi johnCla,

It might work better if there is a bigger discrepancy between the recording size and the canvas size - what if you try recording at full-screen, and then set your canvas size to 1280x720?

Also, what type of tutorial are you making (just curious)?

Regards,

Aaron

I'm having the same problem. My recording is full screen on a Retina display, and canvas is only 720p.

Hi Aaron, the tutorial I referred to was the CAMTASIA tutorial that covered smartfocus. Regardless, you're so smart, I am working on the 1st of a short series of tutorials on EaselJS - a javascript graphics library.

Seriously? No  answer from TechSmith?

Same issue:

1 - recorded fullscreen at 2048x1152 using Mac 2.9.1
2 - set canvas to 854x480 - WAY smaller
3 - Select track
4 - drag Animation > SmartFocus over track

border of track goes YELLOW not green, and icon being dragged shows '+' letting go does nothing... not little markers get added, no message saying "applying smartfocus"

So THEN i went into preferences, and noticed that full screen recording preference was NOT by default "original recording dimensions" - it was set to scale the recording down to 1280x720 I think. which would of course disable smartfocus if you set canvas size to 1280x720. (Stupid default!) I changed it to "original recording dimensions" so NOW, in theory, it will record to the actual screen size.

THEN I made yet another new project and another recording of full screen (2048x1152). Set canvas again to this time to 1280x720 (smaller than original by good margin). Again NOTHING whne drag SmartFocus icon.

TechSmith support sent me a quick video tutorial that explains this feature: http://www.screencast.com/t/q13wLxPE

Thanks for sending over the screencast video johnCla, however, the issue of canvas size being smaller than the recording size, to allow Smartfocus to actually work, STILL DOES NOT WORK. I appreciate the detail that Pardner went into, to explain this. Everywhere I see online, they all suggest the same thing, make the recording size larger than the canvas size, and it will work, but it is still not working for me.

Has anyone been able to find a solution to this issue yet? Would GREATLY appreciate any insight you can provide. It would be nice if someone from TechSmith would actually jump into this convo and help us out. :/

Agree with Jarem - doesn't work and very frustrating, as smart focus for making training tutorial videos was one of the draws that lead me to choose Camtasia specifically...

Techsmith, please address  the *actual issue* which is that your "fix" is not working for us.

Still doesn't work. Camtasia for Mac 2.10.2 on OS X 10.10.3. I can manually zoom and pan, but smart focus does NOTHING.

I'm also dealing with this issue.  Help needed ASAP as procrastination has pushed this element of my project to the end as I assumed it was a no brainer only to find out that I cannot execute it.

This doesn't work for me either. Set canvas at 1280x720, record at full screen. Open windows, enter text in different places, highlight things, click buttons. Stop recording. Drag "SmartFocus" onto video on timeline, border goes yellow, green plus mark , but then the expected zoom and pan icons don't appear. It just fails.

This is a bug, right? The "SmartFocus at Time" works fine. I think its not collecting the data during the recording that it needs to apply smartfocus automatically.

It's a real pity that after so many months and so many complaints this issue still has not been sorted out or even acknowledged. As I mentioned, this feature used to work fine for me in the past, therefore I know it's not anything I am doing differently and that it must relate to some upgrade either within Camtasia or the Mac operating system. So it really needs to be investigated and sorted out by Techsmith. Very disappointing.

I remember the good old days when Techsmith gave a rat's butt about support which clearly now they do not. We deleted our screencast.com account because it, too, refused to keep pace (went to Wistia, free, and better).

I bought Camtasia a few days ago. Smart Focus wouldn't work. I upgraded to the latest version. It still won't work on any canvas size.

This seriously needs to be addressed.

I'm still in evaluation period, 2 days into trying it, and yes, this seems to be the star feature of Camtasia, it is sad it doesn't work, any recommendations on similar software I could start evaluating? (and I'm sorry you just paid for it)

I still like the program, and there is a "workaround" to the smart focus issue, it is just that they keep promoting this software's main feature is the "smart focus" and it hasn't worked for months now !

I think the smart focus issue is huge, but what's BIGGER is that TechSmith is willing to allow this major frustration to go UNANSWERED, without even a single response to us in their very own forum!.... which is the absolute worst way to handle a product not delivering what we expect.

I opened a support ticket on this and a got a clear response from tech support. Its broken, and its hard to fix. So don't bother resizing your canvas. The support guy was honest about it, so I said "well this is the feature I and others bought Camtasia for over the myriad other options we have. So shouldn't you actually come out in the open and say that its broken? Hundreds of people are buying it, and then spending the next few days resizing their canvas."  I sent the link to this thread. He said he was going to take it up with the decision makers. That was a week or so ago.

Well I requested that they didn't close my support ticket on this till it was fixed. Their automated ticketing system eventually closed it however. I am annoyed about smart focus being broken, but flat out gobsmacked that Techsmith won't even acknowledge publicly its broken. And that they continue to advertise smart focus as a feature and let people waste hours trying to get it to work. Here is a PDF copy of the conversation with Techsmith support
https://www.dropbox.com/s/4hc5vj3vi4v1i0j/smartfocus_thread.pdf?dl=0

I suggest everyone who reads this opens a new support ticket on this issue.

Thank you for posting this, really helps. I'm amazed that this has not be addressed publicly by techsmith. In tech-startup land this would never ever fly.

I'm having the exact same issue.I followed the instructions in the Camtasia Tutorial (https://www.techsmith.com/tutorial-camtasia-mac-gs-6-viewer-understanding-zoom-pan-bamm.html), resized my canvas size, etc., but still didn't get the results I was looking for. I drag SmartFocus to my clip but nothing happens. This is very frustrating because I purchased Camtasia for Mac largely because of SmartFocus. Not having this feature causes me a lot of wasted time, so Camtasia should either fix this bug ASAP or give clients a refund until this has been sorted out. You can't have someone buy a product but then tell them that the very feature that you sold to them isn't working. Camtasia, please get back to everyone on this thread.

This problem has not been addressed and SmartZoom is still not working on Version 9.  Possible solutions from tech are not helping the situation.

Good luck. I bought this product from them about a year ago and still...NOTHING! This is one of the worst companies I have had the displeasure of doing business with. They should really be ashamed.

More like 2 years for me. I understand if they can't do it. Then just come clean and remove it from the feature list etc. Maybe they did ... I stopped checking ... and figured out how to do it manually ...

No, I'm sorry, it still does not work effectively on the Mac version.
For now, it is still best to add your own zooms where effective. With the higher resolution devices people have these days, and the better bandwidth as well, it is less necessary than it used to be to publish a low-resolution (less pixels/dimensions) with scrolling and zooming.
However, as needed, just drag on a "custom animation", then move and size the video as you like, at each point that you think it would be helpful.
