Snag It: Measure or probe an image w/o selecting?

The selection tool displays the size of the region selected. Is it possible to get this information (the size of a "selection") with out actually selecting parts of image? In other words, how can I measure parts of an image without the possibility of modifying the image?

The only way I can see to get the size of an object is with the selection tool ... which gives the size of the area selected. It is non destructive unless you choose to do something with that area
Am I understanding the question correctly?

Yes, I think you understand the question. It's the accidental "unless" I am trying to avoid. I guess I am trying to use Snag It as a poor-man's CAD tool! I have a floor plan and have realized I can calculate a scale of pixels to inches or feet, but occasionally I move or delete a selection. I have made the file read-only but I was wondering if there was a way to probe the image w/o risking an accidental edit.

I do things like this. Being of the "all thumbs" persuasion I have found that UNDO (CONTROL+Z) is my friend. Exclamations of "OH SHIT!!) don't help but make me feel betterĀ
