Can you help me compare Snag-It and Jing? I don't understand the differences (i.e., when to use one vs. the other). Thanks!

Hey Becky,

Here is a webpage made for people transitioning to Snagit, from Jing pro, or Jing free. http://www.techsmith.com/jing-snagit....

As far as when to use one vs the other, it really depends on what you are doing. Personally, I use Jing for basic, quick screen caps, and use snagit for anything more in depth, like when I need to point something out to someone, or do some basic editing on the screen capture. Snagit also has a little bit more robust sharing system, with more options. If I need to share something quickly to Evernote for example, I would use Snagit.

Also, here is a bit more info about moving from Jing to Snagit:http://www.techsmith.com/tutorial-sna...

Hope this helps!

Jing = a nice pickup truck, gets the job done.

Snagit - an 18 wheeler, need to learn how to drive it. Too many features that make it cumbersome to use.

Jing is a nice sleek program.

Jing Pro was or is a great program, I use it so much, as of the 28th of Feb its axed and I am forced to use 2 programs to get the job done. I need MP4 video. And Jing free does not support it, only Pro does.

Yes I cried when Jing Pro died.....my favorite other than Camtasia Studio. Snagit looked like I could edit and then said use Studio, which I have but it is just another step I don't want to have to do....and Jing Pro let me add captions on screencast...tear tear, I still love you Jing

Thanks, Logan and Unicus, for your comments. Both your replies helped. I have used Snagit to do quick screen captures, and am moving more into video, so I was trying to figure out if I needed Snagit. Looks like I'll need either that or some other software.

SO, does Camtasia Studio do all (plus some) that Snagit does? (i.e., would I need both of these products or just Camtasia?

Sorry for these questions, but you're really helping direct me. Appreciate it!

You would just need Snagit 11. Camtasia is more for in depth video production. I have all three. I use Jing Pro the most.

If you are doing video, Snagit 11 would work just fine.

On a Windows machine you can edit video on a MAC you can not. I have been teaching Photoshop for 15 years so on a MAC I am pretty used to just opening up a screen grab adding whatever the heck I want and saving for web or what have you.... it all depends on what you are used to and what you are going to be using the products to produce.

Note: Jing now saves either to Screencast where you can link to the video (but there are bandwidth restrictions) or to your desktop as a swf file only. With Snagit you have more options but not to save as mp4 though you can save to YouTube and then with add-ons download an .mp4....long way around. With Camtasia you can do much much more including editing which you can not with Jing or Snag-it.
