Snagging windows with dropdowns using Snagit 2018 for Mac

I have a window that has a dropdown.  I used to be able to expand the dropdown and then hit the hot keys to capture the window.  For whatever reason, the hotkeys don't work as long as the dropdown is expanded.  I turned on the Menu option for Selection but that just captures the dropdown and not the window with it.  What do I need to do to capture a window with an expanded dropdown?

In an unusual situation where conventional methods don't work.

You could just record the screen and capture an image from the recording.

Another idea is to use the option for a 5 second delay. It's true that on occasion, touching the hotkeys is enough to dismiss a menu option. So, instead, enable the delay, hit capture, open your menu, and then the capture will "strike".

Each of those ideas is true but it doesn't address the problem that this used to work and now doesn't.  I have been using Snag It since the beginning and don't want to see features taken away as new features are added.

I don't believe we changed anything related to this, though we'd be interested to see if you could get it to work with an older version of Snagit on the same menu. I could be wrong, but I think it's much more likely that the app you're trying to capture has changed to start reacting when you hit a global hotkey, unfortunately.

Still, I'm going to fix the category on this issue and assign it to Snagit (you accidentally put Camtasia) to see if the Snagit team knows of any related bugs. Thanks jay!

I tried capturing a few apps that had dropdowns with Snagit 2018 and it appears to be working, at least with the default key combo. Is there a particular app you're capturing that has this issue? Have you tried changing your Snagit hotkey to see if that has any affect?

It is happening in Chrome. All other programs are letting me capture the dropdown.

Sometimes I can tap Control-shift-s and get the menu AND the surrounding territory but other times it get the surrounding territory  without the menu.

Sometimes I can tap Control-Shift-e and get the menu without the background and other times I get no capture at all.

I've not been able to figure out why sometimes it work and other times it doesn't but that's what I'm getting.

What I'd REALLY REALLY  like is for tapping one command-key and getting a popup window asking me what I want so I can chose Menu (by itself), Menu w/ background, Screenshot, Repeat last screenshot.

I occasionally get hand cramps trying to get my left-hand's fingers snarled up in the position necessary to get the option I want. (After I remember which option I want.)

I do appreciate what Snagit can do, I wish I appreciated how to get there.

I didn't know about Control-Shift-e. I am having the same problem as outlined above, but Control-Shift-e worked for me. Thanks for the tip!

Please be careful with this: I have never used this feature and tried it with a select already open and it caused my browser to select one of the menu items, which reloaded my browser window and cost me several hours of in-browser editing. To be honest, I can't figure out how that happened, and I know it's my own fault for backing up my work as I went along, but still, be careful trying out keyboard shortcuts you haven't used before :-).

I have this same issue as Jay. I just upgraded today and it started today (on a mac). I am a long time snag-it user, it captures the region including the drop down menu when I use my hot-keys. Now if a menu is displayed in the region I want to capture, it won't allow me to capture it unless I do it completely separately and I really don't have time for that. I understand there are work-arounds to do it separately but it used to work just fine. I took the same screenshots two weeks ago so now its taking me twice as long. Did Jay ever find a fix for this?

What apps are you trying to take captures of? I tried a few dropdowns and menus in Snagit 2018.2.3 and I was able to capture the menu and the window behind it in the same capture. I did have to use a hotkey to start, otherwise the menu would dismiss.

I thought it might be the new Chrome and combination of who knows what, but it captures as expected in other applications with drop-downs. It seems as if it is something specific in this particular application so will check with the developer. Thank you for the assistance - if I figure it out will let you know.

Luke - it seems to be with Visual Force and Skuid pages - it just won't let me take a regional screenshot and keep the dropdown menu. It forces me to click which takes the menu away - even with a timer set.

Wondering if a workaround might involve a video capture, then saving a frame showing the drop-downs?

I am having this same issue in Chrome. Seems like it might be the new version of Chrome, but I can get menu screenshots in every other program on my Mac so far.
