Snagit 12 new user question

I recently acquired Snagit 12 through my corporate IT department. At the moment, it's an unregistered version, but that should change soon. I've been using the Snipping Tool that comes with Windows, but it was very tedious and I wanted something better. My only other choice was SnagIt. I've used it before and knew that it was more flexible and customizable, but didn't really know what the newer version would offer. I am just in the process of familiarizing myself with the product, but already have a question.

Is there any kind of autosave feature? In conjunction with that, is it possible to define a default file naming convention where one could specify a topic, perhaps, and have it number the captures? I have seen this in other utilities (like the freeware MWSNAP), but don't see any such options in SnagIt.

Let's say, for example, that I'm watching a WebEx presentation and I want to quickly capture a series of slides. It would be nice to be able to: (One Time) 1- specify the range of the capture (screen, window, fixed rectangle, etc.); 2- preset the directory and file name construct; 3- hit a hotkey to automatically capture and save the image, without having to always hit the capture button, then select the image window, then hit "capture image", then save and still have to enter a filename (the provided date/time stamp is workable, but not as convenient). There may be a way to do that, but it wasn't evident in the help documentation. If it's there, would someone please share their wisdom?

I seem to remember that something like what you need was described in the forum, several months ago. And I'm not sure it was for v12. But it may worth searching.

Hello Paul,

You can set Snagit 12 up just as you are asking. You can

1. edit an existing capture profile
2. Create a New capture profile   (best way)

Here's how:

Go to "Manage Profiles"

1. Click New Profile and name it.
2. Make sure your new profile is selected
3. Modify options

In "selection" chose you desired capture type ie; region,  window, etc.
Next -  Click the "Editor button" to off  (we are saving the captures to a folder only")
Next - Click the "Hotkey Button" and chose your hotkey preference

Next - in "Share" select "file" then click the option cog wheel to bring up this window

1. In the "Image Tab" under File Name select"Automatic file name" then click Options Button
to bring up this window

In the "Format field" you want  <Prefix> <AutoNum>

If that isn't what is there already, clear the field and in the "File name components"
click Prefix>>Insert>>Automatic number>>Insert

In the "Prefix text field" type the just file name (not the number) you want.  At the top look at "Preview" to see what your saved image(s) file name will look like.

Click OK

You will then be back at this window:

Now under Folder select "Always use this folder" Click the folder icon and chose the folder you want your captures saved to.

Next under File format select "Always use this file format" and pick the format you want ie; .png or .jpg

 Click "Apply" and then OK

You will now be back at this windows:

Click the Save button and close the window.

Now Use That Profile  to make your captures.

Hit your hotkey, Do your selection be  it Region, Window, what ever you setup
and your image(s) captures should be saved in the folder your chose  to use with name and numbers

Whoo.. I'm ready for a nap after this post

Dubie, thank you for taking the time to answer with such perfect step-by-step instructions. They worked perfectly. I think it would have taken quite a while to figure it out without guidance.

Hi - we've been using Snagit and Camtasia for longer than I can remember.
I'm not going to bore the life out of you other than just to say we LOVE IT!.
All images saved in the library instantly.   Capturing scrolling windows and menus.
we use it in Software testing for images, captures and videos to feedback to developers.
regards

Stuart
