Hello TechSmith Community;

Welcome everyone! The counts are in and the feature suggestions have been brought to the development team and we are here today to let you know what suggestions fit where within our development track. Please note that highly-voted suggestions are not guaranteed to be within the product; each suggestion is reviewed by our development team and TechSmith leadership and weighed against our plans and where such suggestion will fit. This is an evolving process so some ideas may have a Status change as development continues on Snagit. Feel free to reach out to Robert at r.risdon@techsmith.com if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Feature Suggestion process.

Without further ado, here is a breakdown of the 2017 Year End Snagit Voting Roundup

Planned

  • At this time we have no Planned suggestions. But that will change as we investigate the Ideas Under Consideration.

Original Post Contents

With the wrapping up of our Camtasia voting period, we are now launching our 2017 year-end voting period for Snagit. It will run from today, January 5th, 2017 through January 19th, 2017. The purpose of this Snagit Roundup is to take the feature suggestions submitted between July 1st, 2017 and December 11th, 2017 that had the most number of votes and resubmit them to the community; we will be sharing this thread and sending out in-product notifications to existing Snagit users in an attempt to reach the widest pool of Snagit users possible. We recommend that you click on the various Share buttons found at the bottom of the thread to share them with your co-workers and fellow Snagit users (see here ).

How to vote:
To vote in this roundup you need to first log into your TechSmith account in the upper right corner of this page then simply click on those feature suggestions listed below that you would find useful and purposeful to your usage of Snagit. Once you are logged in and have selected the suggestions most impactful to you, just click the "Vote" button in the upper right corner of the Idea thread (see here). Please note that you can only vote once per thread.

Have a feature suggestion that is not listed?
If you have a suggestion for a new feature, please create a new suggestion here. If there is an existing thread covering the same concept as your suggestion, please vote for it (do not create a new thread). If your idea is not listed you can create a new thread by clicking on the "Continue Creating Conversation" link at the bottom of the page (see here). Once you have filled out your new suggestion, simply click "Post" to submit it to the community (see here). Submitting a suggestion in this fashion may see it added to the next round up, which will take place mid-2018 assuming it is a popular topic with the community (based on Vote Counts).

Please note that no ideas posted in the comments of this topic will be added to the current round up; if you have an Idea that you would like to submit for a roundup, please do so by creating a new thread and sharing it via your colleagues, social channels, and champion its cause here in the TechSmith Community Forums.

That concludes our list for this Voting Roundup!
Thank you all for your participation and we will update this thread with the results shortly after the voting period has ended.

How about fixing the stamps browser for a start and then at some point get it rebuilt? This is something that was broken and is a  really part of the core of what snagit should be doing (markups) A lot of people were in several threads looking for a fix and perhaps search and keywords at some point yet ... it is always  on the lower end of interest despite the votes and comments. Some of the things on the list such as the layers view and vector support have far fewer people wanting them, not that they are not worthy

We've heard about that from several different people. And that's one that we're considering currently before the voting results come in. Because it is so core to that workflow. I'll add it for voting, but even if it's lower we'll continue to look at making some improvements.

Edit: Actually after talking with Robert, since we have that one still Under Consideration, we don't need to add it for voting for this round. It already hit the threshold and is being investigated in the next round of work.

Chris ... why not rebuild the stamps feature so it is better than before? Add a keywords table and leave it to your staff to add them to yours and let the guy at superstamps update his ... or issue an importable table with a keyword structure that you guys create. (and let us know what it is so we can follow suit with our own creations)
Seriously though, at least fix it so one can drag and drop PLUS double click to get a stamp into the document
I don't know how the guy that runs Software casa feels about it but by breaking this feature you made his sales stamps, monster stamps and more almost impossible to use

Rick, I've seen you mention the stamps feature on other occasions. Admittedly, I'm a bit confused. I do use this feature a fair amount myself, but I've never considered it horribly broken.

What particular aspect of it do you consider to be broken?

Cheers... Rick :)

  1. Cannot search
  2. Cannot click to insert
  3. Cannot drag and drop out of the utility
  4. Browsing is difficult
1 &4 need to be implemented and or fixed
2 & 3 used to work. I have no idea as to why it was broken and left that way.
Ask the superstamps users that use a lot of stamps to mark up documents how this affects them
This has been a central component of snagit for a long time. Basic usage not bloat.
Opening a windows explorer window is a bad workaround. You can easily delete stamps if you are not very careful if you delete and not close it from the recent bar

Hmmm, I would think searching would be a bit of work, no? I mean, there would first need to be some method created that first allowed you to somehow tag each of the stamps with key words.

Not following you on the inability to click to insert. I suppose you want the ability to just click a stamp and poof! It goes into the canvas? Where? I'm not seeing that particular bit as being a hindrance. I click my stamp and then I roughly position the mouse where I want the stamp and I click. Same goes for the drag and drop out of the utility. As it's unlikely that the image would be placed where you really want it to be, you would still need to click and drag it to where you want it, no? Perhaps you are wanting to add more than one stamp at a time?

Hmmm, and in thinking about that, it might be nice if we had a "pasteboard" area surrounding the actual canvas. Where we could perhaps have stamps or whatever that we could "make live" on the pasteboard. Perhaps they would be there when creating a new image from scratch. Or immediately there after a capture. Then it would be as simple as dragging them from the pasteboard and dropping on top of the image.

I could see where if it allowed us to drag from Windows Explorer into the stamps, that could be useful.

I do use stamps quite a lot. And for me, I've found that most of the time, I'm using just a few stamps. So one thing I did that helped my own sanity was to create a folder and name it 0001 - Often Used. That way it floats to the top of the list of Stamps. And I placed those often used stamps in that folder.

A while back I suggested another feature for stamps. An ability to right-click a stamp and have SnagIt create a new image from the stamp. I would find that very useful for some of my own workflows. Additionally, it could be very useful to right-click in the editor and see an option to save either the entire image or a selection as a stamp.

Cheers... Rick :)

It used to work that way ... double click a stamp and it would appear on the board for further moving and manipulation
Searching would be some work. It would require a keywords  database of sorts. IT would be nice if we had the format and could import at will. Not going to have a meltdown if we don't get that right off

If they did that, you wouldn't want to buy Camtasia. Snagit video is for simple stuff. Very simple. It would not be fair to say it is a ?come on) for Camtasioa but ...

Lets just say that Snagi is not a video editor and if you need more than a simple video, Snagit is  probably not the product for it.

Like I mentioned to Rick G above. We have the team looking at this soon, so it doesn't need to go through another round of voting.

I don't know if this has been covered, or if the latest SnagIt 2018 has it. But I wish the small regular red button (sorry i don't know the proper term) that auto-hides at top of screen, used to take screenshots (images) that never captured the mouse pointer before v13, was changed back to just that. Then let the floating, rectangular dock thing, have the "option" to capture it.

I'm so used to the old way & then I get the damn arrow in my shots!  While the rectangular dock (proper term?) doesn't always load, so I can't find it & have to close SnagIt & rerun it, etc..  Sometimes I close it, but later want it, but need an easy way to open it. That big old dock gets in the way, it's too big IHMO.  Plus I can't auto-hide it like the other, smaller one.  For what's it's worth, I often use my 17" laptop at 1080p, usually with the internal & external LCD's.

Susan, in v2018, on the toolbar there is a button called "step" that will do what you are looking for. You can create "New Themes" with different colors and shapes but with limitations.

I am shocked that SnagIt still isn't DPI aware.  I just want to be able to dock my Surface and not have the application be either TINY or HUGE.  It's such a small thing yet absolutely ruins the user experience.

WINDOWS 10 -
I have a high resolution laptop display (3840x2160) set to 200% scaling and two external monitors (1920x1080) set to 100% scaling.
Snagit 11 would handle displaying the app fine on both sized.
After upgrading to Snagit 2018, I can no longer use snagit on my high res laptop display because the menu items etc. are so tiny that they are unreadable.  My preference was to use it on the laptop monitor, so it really messes up my work flow now.
PLEASE FIX!!!

Think it through to its logical conclusion. If SnagIt were to do all Camtasia does, there would be no need for Camtasia, it would have to die, and SnagIt would cost perhaps $300.

I agree.  I am aware that Camtasia does this on an advanced level but there are various times I would like to cover up a few items on the video like names, etc to protect identities.
1. save group of screenshoots with png format
2. auto rotate on horizont-line
3. correct snaging in PDF

thx!

There are times I'd like to save all of the images in SnagIt to a given format, usually PNG, with an auto-generated filename would be fine.  So the next time I open SnagIt (after booting PC next time, for instance) that no images are in it.

Sometimes I take screenshots over days, but don't have time to save each one after a week or two.

So yes, a sort of batch save of all open images to an auto-generated filename, to a selected file type, would be nice.

Probably OneDrive for personal use (non business) is being meant?

Also see: "Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive" 83 votes .. but not covered in the above list.
https://goo.gl/gKj6PR

Later:
there have been a number of requests for having OneDrive ('personal') added.
e.g.

-OneDrive (formerly Skydrive) Integration for Snagit
-Are there plans to integrate Snaglt with Box.com or OneDrive?
-Snag-it: OneDrive to the list of Outputs for both Windows and Mac
-I would like integration into regular OneDrive and/or Dropbox
-How can I output to OneDrive?
-How about a option to use onedrive. I use one drive throughly yet I cannot access onedrive for business
-How do I share to Onedrive (not Onedrive Business)
-Onedrive als Speicherort lässt sich nicht hinzufügen

I am not sure why... but one way or the other, it seems it doesn't get the attention it deserves, meaning to say that this request isn't listed to be voted for.

Is it some technical reason? Google Drive is supported though.

What I would love to see is multiple video capture windows as if you are running 2 separate snagit on one pc!
Please DO NOT ADD anything more that just a few people use and will make snagit "heavy" and unusuable... keep it as simple as possible!
Remember the early versions of snagit? That's why we loved it...

The problem is something one person wants gets defined as "something only a few use" but our personal wants should take precedence.  I asked for a core definition of what snagit should be and was told they are moving into technical drawing so what you think and what  I think will become increasingly moot as we are no longer the customer base
I suspected this in v12 and was invigorated when Wendy Hamilton stepped in but apparently that was just to quiet us down
THey are proud of their 3 million snagit users but seem to not worry about those who have stopped renewing multiple license seats since it is so broken
If you look, it is the same mentality that has been used by Woolworth, Montgomery Ward, and lately Microsoft, IBM and (just starting) Walmart although the last 3 are running on inertia as the executives proclaim a grand future as they dance to their flutes and march ever closer to the cliff

Well, I think you've got to take this whole voting process with a grain of salt.

I haven't given up on it all together. But it has no teeth.

There's escape clauses for TechSmith to implement "0"  voter requests for new features.
https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/feature-request-statuses-what-do-they-mean

In a Nut Shell, the way I read it.

1. No Status
This Idea is in limbo, could remain there for an unforeseen  period of time. We just don't know. It sits on a desk or hard drive somewhere gathering dust at the moment.

2. Under Consideration

Yeah, were thinking about. With no commitments at this time. We hear one of our members has getting married in 2029 under consideration? For some reason, the significant other in this relationship isn't on board with the "under consideration" concept or timeline.

3. Planned
Judge this one for yourselves. Through the power of copy and paste.I bring you no commitment to this feature either.

When you see an Idea with “Planned” as its Status then this means that the Idea is in active development, but could still be dropped if met with unforeseen problems. When a beta build with the feature becomes available, we will review the thread’s followers and contact those followers privately (wherever possible).

4.Implemented

Self explanatory.
I believe their have been a few features added."Very Few, less than 5?" that were actually voted for.

I would like to see that list posted.

5.  Not Planned

Dream on. Not going to happen.

Bottom line, sorry. This probably sounds pretty negative on my part.

But this is my honest assessment on this whole voting process.

Regards,Joe

Yes Joe and you are not negative, you are accurate. I do not disparage Daniel and appreciate (finally!) some honesty from Techsmith.
THey have a plan to become a technical documentation program and what you want really may not fit into that.
They are going (better yet ARE) changing a great program into some phantasmagoria that will serve some corporate idea of ... something. SOmething that will do everything but nothing well (Not bitter ... track what they have done since version 11 when some dimwit tore everything apart and would not answer to the customer base)

I am not going to make a crybaby statement about leaving snagit and these forums. I am wondering why I bought the maintenance package though. I will keep using it until it no longer is feasible to do so

Reading your comments reminds me of the "how the sausage is made" metaphor.

If you came to TechSmith five or more years ago and asked who the primary user base is, you would have heard trainers and technical writers. We are well aware that we serve a wide audience of users. We've also had feature requests that we will or won't do.

I've worked here for over ten years. None of these things have really changed. Here's what has changed.

We are being more transparent about our work and its status by leveraging this feedback site. We're also doing a better job of leveraging our user base to prioritize the work we take on. I'd say we've always done this, but we're trying to do it on a larger scale because we've certainly made some poor decisions in the past.

There are always going to be and always have been features we will/won't implement. What's different is we're giving you some transparency into what those things are and a larger voice in establishing their priority.

Keep in mind that priority isn't always reflective of how fast we can actually complete and deliver, and the first pass at a feature isn't usually the last pass at a feature. Sometimes these things are complicated and take a while to pull off.

One final thought, when I say "won't do" I mean won't do right now. It does not always mean, "won't do ever."

Thanks Glen for some honesty. Many  long time users are behind you 100% if they know you are listening.. Really most of us WANT to be happy customers but at times it has felt like we are shoveling shit against the tim\de
I am curious, what kind of things are on the current "won't implement" list? That is not a challenge.  Some of us have been vociferous about NOT adding bloat to the editor that is better left to other programs such as illustrator, photoshop etc.

First, I don't even work on Snagit so I don't feel super-comfortable answering this question. But here's an example of something that's on the never list: video editing. We're not trying to turn Snagit into Camtasia.

Generally speaking, I would say that anything in here that's tagged as "Not planned" are things we're not doing anything other than talking about.

Ok I suspected (and understand) the video editing.
Side note: I make few screen videos and Camtasia is extreme overkill for my needs which leaves me in a hole of sorts. I use another service but they have decided they can milk more gold out of it. I paid for multi years but when that expires I will be off and looking again
ANd my convoluted point? There is a market for lower end video capabilities that can record the screen then mark it up

None of this changes the fact that TechSmith has created "Zero" commitment policy's for themselves with regards implementing anything we vote for.
They have an out, and don't have to add any new features at all.

That was my only point.

The road to {Where?} is paved with good intentions.

    Just kidding, lighten up. LOL
Photo of Glenn Hoeppner

The reason for the out is because software development is highly unpredictable. We put estimates on these things internally, but don't usually communicate them because there's a lot of risk involved in any changes. We would feel way worse about promising a feature by a certain date and not hitting the mark.

Imagine you buy a house and the outlet doesn't work. You think it's not a big deal to fix it, but then the electrician finds that the outlet was a spliced in extension cord. Then you rip down some of the wall to fix that and found more-and-more of the wiring in your house was never up-to-code. Pretty soon it's spiraled out of control and you're rewiring everything. And hey, while the walls are down it makes sense to pump up the plumbing too. Programming is often a lot like that :)

To Rick's comment, "There is a market for lower end video capabilities that can record the screen then mark it up," what there's a market for and what we can do and be profitable at or things that align with our company's goals don't always align.

Ha, I'm both a plumber and a carpenter. I didn't need a long winded explanation as to why TechSmith might not deliver a feature on time.

I was trying to take the take the high road and avoid bring up this point. But now that you've felt compelled to explain the the obvious. I'll expand on my position.

The voting process has been in place since September of 2016. Literally hundreds of ideas have been posted and votes have been tallied.
I'm thinking less than 3 have been implemented. I could be wrong? Maybe you could post a list of the features implemented directly attributable to the voting process?

Contributing to the voting process and submitting ideas. Feels more like an act in futility, than a wise use of my time.

Right indeed!

That aside - it would have been nice to have a kind of 'recap' of all the suggestions since then (September 2016) and their status.

How about the suggestions with status 'under consideration'?
For example:
-Allow Snagit Library to be put on a network drive (83 votes) - https://goo.gl/mvBmFM
-Favorite Quick Styles and Tools (58 votes) - https://goo.gl/3gwfYL
SnagItEditor - please add 'cornered' arrows and rulers (55 votes) - https://goo.gl/g1m63R
(being somewhat related to "Easy way to draw curved lines and arrows")

Regretfully not so many votes, but suggested a few times.

A handy feature:

Export to Multi-Page PDF - https://goo.gl/QNSmWU
Saving long screen captures to page size images - https://goo.gl/g1ZyhL
Inserting page breaks before printing - https://goo.gl/3m6qyU

All three having to do with printing, or saving of a long screenshot (scrolling webpage, for example) to multiple pages and setting pagebreaks.

i.e. having the ability to insert a vertical/horizontal pagebreaks at some point in the screenshot.
e.g. in the print section of SnagItEditor

I know Camtasia is used for video editing, but it would be nice to be able to add simple things like captions, shapes, call outs  and maybe even the zoom-and-pan effects directly in Snagit. I ran into an issue a few months back were everyone in our department had access to Snagit, but not Camtasia (only the eLearning Developers/Trainers had Camtasia). It created a situation were we could have representatives capture the needed video sections, but someone else (usually me) would have to take the video and do some editing in Camtasia, especially the captions and the zooms and pans.

Scrolling window only works sometimes - if something on the page changes the scroll stops.  It used to work, in 11 I think - but broke with new features.
Also fix the markup tools.  ctrl D for duplicate, let go of previous tool...  there's a list.
Please stop adding features till you fix the old ones and make the whole thing faster.  If editor is not running in the background, its 30 seconds before you can see a capture. That's ridiculous.
Also stop overwriting my preferences with each update. I dont want to select, then choose what I want to capture, its always an image. yes I can turn it off, but I have to look up how every time and next version will reset it.
Snag it used to be great - but now its dying from feature bloat .

Automated voice

Have the ability to type in a paragraph statement and have a "voice" speak what I have placed in the text box. I do not like my voice and would love the ability to choose a voice over. Then I can super impose that over a recording I made.

It would help with educational pieces that I create.

I'd like a separate button for "save directly to clipboard" after selecting the rectangle you want.  Also, a separate button for "save to email" which launches email.  And "save to Evernote" if you have that on your system.  (Like Outlook Mail has where you can assign the image to an Evernote Notebook).

You set that up as a preset and with a hot key if you use that a lot. Mine has clipboard ON and editor off and a hot key and it works like a charm. I also have one that does the same and reduces the capture to 500 px tall for pasting into emails 9or whatever)
There are already presets for evernote and other programs but you can create these yourself.

If you need help with doing that just reply back here. You can send captures to almost any program that can handle it

@william.c.brekke this guide might be helpful: https://www.techsmith.com/tutorial-snagit-presets.html It shows how to set up capture presets in Snagit, which support one-click workflows like you describe.

Yes, I see now that if after selecting a rectangle I can just press return, and if I have the ESC closes editor set I can get rid of that window quickly.  Also, I added the export to Evernote to the export options and that works well, too, optionally sending it immediately to my default Notebook which I call @Inbox.  Great.

The possibilities are remarkable. THe Photoshop people can look at a screen and if they KNOW they are going to need adjustments, they can just send it to Photoshop (or Illustrator) and tweak it to their hearts content. THen copy it and paste it as a new image in the Snagit editor to finish up with arrows and shapes which are much easier to deal with in the editor and will match other slides that did not need heavy editing.

I've got a simple desire, and that is for screen shots to be easily texted through Apple Messages. As it is now, it freezes up. So to make it work I save the screen shot to my desktop and then I move the photo to Message from there. BTW, all the setting appear correct.

@perezrobertw Something else is going on if this doesn't work for you. I use this workflow all the time. Capture an image, and then I use the "Copy All" button in the Snagit editor and paste into Messages. You might want to try opening a ticket with our Tech Support at https://support.techsmith.com.

@perezrobertw - I just tested this on High Sierra and Snagit 2018.1.1, using the Messages extension under the Share menu in Snagit. Worked perfectly. I agree with Glenn that if it's not working for you, that's something to troubleshoot with tech support.
