Snagit 2018 Direct vs Mac App Store: What are the differences?

I am trying Snagit for the first time (15-day trial) and I wonder what the differences are between the direct purchase and Mac App Store versions of Snagit 2018 before I make a purchase decision. I see an older post referring to Mac App sandbox limitations not allowing the ‘scrolling capture’ feature to work. Is this still the case? Will it be for the foreseeable future? Are there any other differences? Thank you.

I'd likely go with the direct/web version from our website. For a couple workflow reasons:

  1. The web store currently doesn't have a great way to do upgrade pricing. So if you decide to upgrade to a new major version in the future, you'll have to call in to get a discount and then get a key for the direct version.
  2. The system audio plugin doesn't work due to the sandboxing you mentioned earlier, so you won't have the ability to record sound playing over your speakers/headphones if you want that (this is off by default).
  3. Certain share destinations won’t work well. Again due to the sandboxing.
  4. You can do a form of scrolling capture (dragging the url to the Snagit icon), which is very fast. BUT it doesn't work for websites that require you to be logged in, because it's capturing via the URL alone. The scrolling capture that appears when bringing up the crosshairs works much better in the direct/web version. Both versions have Panoramic capture though too, so you can manually scroll and it'll create a large image with the content you scrolled.

The App Store version still very valuable and updating all in one place with all your apps on your computer is very useful. But the sandboxing prevents us from giving that version a lot of the nice touches that Snagit is known for. The direct version will still check for updates daily. And will auto-update if you set the preference.

Hope that helps!
