Snagit 2018: How to de-select a tool so that I can do something else?

I've been using SnagIt for years and am incredibly frustrated with 2018 because I cannot easily "switch gears" by simply clicking on the next thing I want. Whatever tool I'm using at the time, SnagIt has it by the jugular.

This is especially irksome with the cutout tool.

Similar to how things work in other apps (MSoft Office, Quicken, Canva, yadda yadda), my expectation is to switch tools simply by clicking on the next tool or menu item that I want. Nada.

Less efficient: press Escape. Nada.

I do not recall ever having this kind of problem with earlier versions of SnagIt.

Please advise.

I have 2018, and if I use the cut-out, I can just click on the next tool, like Text, Arrow, whatever, and that's what it does.  We must have something configured differently, but I don't recall changing anything from the factory settings to explicitly change this behavior.

The cut out tool is broken. Has been for a long time. You must manually select another tool.

If you have other tools selected, you can hit the "Alt" key to deselect that tool and return to "Cursor" mode.

If you have several annotations on the same image, and you can select them. "Not Flattened"
If you select the "Move Tool".  You can select and edit their properties without the need to select the tool.

But the old way of click an existing arrow and draw an identical one."Switch to that tool" Is gone.
As far as I know, there's no way to get that functionality back.

I can select any annotation and draw it without selecting the tool from the tool bar first. You cannot.
If you have the arrow tool selected. You can't click a callout and draw another one. You have to go to the tool bar and select the callout tool first.

In SnagIt 12, you just click the callout in the canvas area and you're done.

Did you watch my video all the way through? LOL

I habitually click the toolbar before adding an element. It's just what I've grown accustomed to. I don't believe there is any way around that when you add each element initially. But once the elements are on the image, I certainly can just click the element to give it focus and add another one.

So I figured you had to be seeing different behavior somehow and I decided to test more thoroughly. I discovered that there are two of the elements that seem to ignore this rule. The Step and the Stamp. Seems that with either of these, once they have been selected they remain selected until you click the toolbar. Either of these seem to insist on disallowing clicking on other elements and subsequent clicks just add more stamps or steps.

But the Blur, the Callout, the Shape, the Text, the Highlighter, the Line, and the Arrow tools seem to operate exactly as you show in version 12.

Although I did discover that if one is intent on avoiding having to go click the toolbar, you can put the pointer over what you want to edit and right-click to edit the item.

Interesting. I wonder what it is about those two elements? One would think the behavior would be the same for all of them. Obviously not!

Cheers... Rick :)

After a repair install, deleting the SnagIt 2018 folder from the register and a computer restart. I get the same behavior you describe.
I think the first version of 2018 worked that way I was referring to. It took deleting that folder to get rid of the behavior.

@dz17 - After reading your comment, I SLOOOOOWED way down while editing a variety of snags. At this moment, I believe the crux of the problem is the ability to release a tool by simply clicking elsewhere, such as behind the canvas within SnagIt or offscreen on the desktop.

I.e., how does one get back to a pristine state where no tool at all is selected?

With the cutout tool as a prime example of the problem, if I click behind the canvas, then the cutout keeps repeating. With every click, the figure is cut again.

Yes, this is a well trodden path.  Many threads devoted to it and there doesn't appear to be much prospect of getting it fixed.

I can duplicate not getting out of "cut out mode" if I click on the screen outside the captured image.  I was able to get back to neutral by clicking another thumbnail and then returning, but it's admittedly clumsy.

What I don't get is why I want to get to neutral?  Either I have more things to do or I don't.  If I do, I click that tool.  If I don't supposedly I need to either save the resulting image (File | Save or Save As) or paste it somewhere in another application (Alt-A, Ctrl-C).

Are you referring to the fact that when editing the annotations (callouts, arrows, highlight) in the foreground you can just click between them, but when in cutout, which is editing the background image, you have to click an annotation tool to get out of that mode?  I noticed effects doesn't have that problem.

I completely sympathize with your feeling.  I have been using Snagit for many years and went to buy it on my own after I left my company ... WOW.. what a let down... not sure why these changes were necessary,...  at the moment i can;t deselect a pasted item ( even with I click on deselect or saving and closing the application )
posted my own issue separately from this thread.  Hopefully someone can fix.
