Snagit 2019 got rid of saving as gif?

All prior versions of Snagit allowed me to Save As .gif. This was an option for any image file. Now 2019 comes along and it appears TechSmith has decided .gif is only a file format for video, as in animated gifs. WTF TechSmith. I've been a Snagit user since 1.0 and save as .gif several times a day. Our portal is hardcoded to reference .gif files. Now I cannot save to .gif without using a different imaging tool. Please restore the option to save as a .gif!! At the very least, you should document that it's no longer available. I just wasted $37 upgrading to Snagit 2019.

I agree.  GIFs are still needed to make images with transparent backgrounds.  Please restore this format to SnagIT.

Hi David,

Sorry for the trouble with the latest version. That looks like a new bug and definitely wasn't introduced purposefully. I will write up a new issue asap.

In the meantime, one workaround is to head to Snagit->Preferences->Advanced and change the "Drag and paste format" to use "gif":

This will allow you to drag from the open captures tray to Finder (or elsewhere) in the gif format.

We will update this thread as soon as this bug is addressed.

Curious: why do you even want to save as GIF? If you want transparent backgrounds, you can use PNG, which has the advantage of full color spectrum. GIFs scale the colors down to 256, which tends to look bad and also makes some post-processing difficult because colors don't match well.

As I mentioned in my question, we have some legacy hard-coded references to .gif files. I’d love to use.png but don’t have that option. Doesn’t change the fact that TechSmith overlooked a core feature. Glad to see they’ll address it and have offered a workaround.

Curious if you have tried the following. Save one from SnagIt as PNG, but after you save it, rename from PNG to GIF?

My thought is that *IF* this works, it can get you by until TechSmith fixes the issue?

Cheers... Rick :)

That was actually my hack on Friday when I needed to save a logo file last minute. It worked, but obviously isn't the preferred solution ;-)

100% agree with David, I'm a very long time user of Snagit and I definitely use GIFs almost every day. I use them for very large PPT files, and the file size savings of a GIF means the difference between a 20MB PPT and a 5MB PPT. Please bring back 'save as GIF' asap! Thanks!

Good news, everyone, this morning we released version 2019.1.1 which allows GIF saving again!

In the Snagit main menu, choose "Snagit->Check for Updates..." and follow the prompts to install the new version.

Thank you all for bringing this to our attention and apologies for the annoying bug. Please let us know if you have any additional questions or trouble with Snagit.

Hi,

What version are you on currently? Saving as gif should be available in all supported major versions of Snagit now, so there should be no need to upgrade.

Vow, that was fast! Thanks Luke. I removed the comment as I am trying to update the Snagit once again. Its 2019 version 3.3.7 (2009-2015) and there was no option to save Gifs. I am waiting and it's taking a lot of time to check updates/update the version.

I will keep you posted.
Thank you.

Hi,

Since version 3 is no longer supported, the check for updates may not be working anymore, so it might be easier to download the latest version from our website. You can always try the new version out for 30 days before buying an upgrade.
