SnagIt and SnagIt Editor icons

I'm a new user of SnagIt 12.2.
I work from icons on my task bar to open programmes.

SnagIt and SnagIt editor both have the same icon, so having both on my task bar I have to try to remember which way round I put them, hover over the icon and wait for the name to pop up or open one and if I'm wrong then try to remember which I just opened and open the other!

Would it be possible to just have a different icon for editor, like my picture?  A little red "e" is all it took to make it nice and simple to see which is which.

Hi Graham

Interesting. I'm in and out of SnagIt each day. Captured perhaps 200 times yesterday alone. But I've never encountered this issue. The only time there is a SnagIt icon on my taskbar is when the Editor is open. Everything else is either in the one-click thingy (if I've elected to have it available - most of the time I don't) or in my Notification area.

Do you have SnagIt running on startup? Because I use it so much I elected to allow that. Maybe that's the difference?

Cheers... Rick :)

The task bar allows one click opening of programmes, so I elect to have it pinned to taskbar for ease of opening, maybe if I have other programmes open and I can just click the icon and open it.
I don't have it opening on start-up as I'm not in need of it on a daily, or maybe even weekly basis.

I need access to snagit editor, as I have screen recordings sent to me by a company, I work on these and supply them with web/corporate ready lectures. Long story, being worked on, but some of the screen recordings don't work in my video editor, Grass Valley Edius, so I have to open up editor, cut a couple of seconds from the screen capture, re-save it and it then works fine.

So, I'm working in Edius, find a video that doesn't work, open up snag-it editor and I've opened up snagit :)

I'm with you Graham, I just counted and I currently have 88 icons on my Taskbar. I wouldn't have it any other way. I use Auto-hide , couldn't live with out that.
My Editor Icon is on the right. It was always on the right with other versions of SnagIt also. But I know what you mean.
The older versions of SnagIt had a pen on the editors Icon. I don't know why they dropped it. I've changed Icons myself with some software but I can't figure out how to pull it off with SnagIt 12. I tried because I don't like them being identical either.

Regards, Joe

I figured it out Graham. You can download a free Icon if you don't want to use a Windows icon, just Google them. You will need to Unpin SnagIt from the Taskbar first. Follow the steps shown in the Image below, click to enlarge. This is me using windows 8 but 7 works about the same. I did not add the Image showing  the "Icon Selection Window" or the steps to use it. I figure you can probably take it from there. If you need more Info let me know.

After your Icon has been changed , right click the short cut and Pin it to the task bar. ( you probably know all theses things). You can delete the desktop shortcut after that If you want.
It's was almost to easy . No wonder I couldn't do it before. LOL

Regards, Joe

Excellent thanks. Took me a little while, but I used the SnagitE icon I show in my previous post, made it the right size (32pxx32px), saved as a png, converted to an ico use www.converticon.com, saved it to my desktop.
Then followed your instructions to change the ico.
Took a few attempts to get it to register that my icon was an icon, but it did in the end and now on my win8 pc I have two different icons.
Now to see if I can do it on my editing pc, pics to follow!!
I might try screen capturing the process :)

Oh blow, more googling required, the change icon button is not available on my win7 pc!

Double blow, snagit is the only programme I cannot change the icon on. All others have the option. Tried running as admin, no change.

This is something you can do to any file that allows it.  Here's a little Snagit editor icon I made that is a little different.  Feel free to use it if you like or make your own.

I did this one in the editor by capturing the icon, editing it and saving it as an .ICO file.  It looks like this

and you can get it here if you like:  http://goo.gl/gu3Oiz

Manny, thanks for the offer, appreciated, I have an icon I made myself, and completed the task on my win 8.1 pc,

Unfortunately my problem now is, my main editing pc, the one I use most for this work, the change icon button is not available for use, so I'm a bit stuck!!

Are you using a Desktop shortcut??? I just tested my windows 7  PC and I have no problem accessing the change Icon function. I did not actually change it but I can access the menu for doing it. See Image.

Yes, as I said, I managed to do it after a couple of false starts on my win8.1 pc, here's my edited icon in use on the task bar.
The main problem I had was getting windows to recognise the new icon.
On my win 7 pc, following the same procedure the change icon button is unavailable :(

As Joe said, the desktop shortcut - not the exe - should work.

What's your Win 7 version?

How much is yours? We pay £5.94 gallon here in UK, that's about $9.7

I hate to say, but less than $4.0 here. 10 years ago or so it was under $2.

@Joe - WRT the gasoline comment, I learned several years ago from a dear English friend that we Americans should avoid complaining. His response was always "don't cry to me about your 'cheap' petrol prices!". ;)

Two wrongs don't make a right.  Both are way too expensive.  Complain!

Well, darn I complained but didn't tell you how to fix it.  It's easy, create a new shortcut which will have a target and then you can change the icon to whatever you want.  Here's a little video of me doing it:  http://screencast.com/t/1KB9KcTc9ow

This will work for any app that gives you this problem.
