Snagit capture of simple Youtube video gives me good audio and no video, just a blank screen. HOWEVER, the video SOMETIMES appears for a moment.

I reported this on a support ticket weeks ago and received no answer. THEN, about a week ago I received a message saying we have closed this ticket because you didn't respond to the answer. (There had been no answer.) It said to let them know if I wanted it to stay open and I explained that I still have the problem, and YES, please respond. So I'll try this forum and hope for better luck.

I would try checking your spam and see if a response has been placed in there.

For You-Tube Videos.  There is a lot of free software that will let you download U-Tube videos for free. The quality will be better because SnagIt only records at 10fps and motion becomes jittery as a result. Plus the quality of the video and audio will be slightly better as well.

I used this one for several years and it works very well. http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-YouTube-Download.htm#.VFYWAmYo7b0

I use IDM now because it's easier to work with. The videosoft program is not that difficult to use and there are You-Tube videos showing you how to use it.
IDM cost $25 for a lifetime license and the program is updated about every 2 weeks.

My browser, Maxthon, allows for the download of any video directly.  A little window pops up which can either show the video in its own window or download it.  Very simple,  easier than recording and free.

This is a great browser Manny Thanks {: >)
I'm using it already and like what I see so far. I can't find any information about disabling the built in down-loader so I can use IDM. Can you disable it?

I'm willing to use there's because I like this browser so much already. But HOW??? in the world do you sort through the mess that pops up in the image below.  If I just  want to download  a MP4 video at 1080p ??? I don't want to fight through this menu every time, there must be a better way. I can't find much on y-tube covering this at all.

Thanks for any Info you have. Regards, Joe

I have the same problem with download program. What file do you choose? This seems like a nice downloader but it is very confusing to me to. Thank you in advance. John

Thank you, Joe and Manny, for the replies. Yes, I download Youtube videos all the time. But I want to use Snagit when I need to grab just a few minutes of a long video. I apologize for not stating that in the original.

And, no, there are no TechSmith replies in my Spam basket. As i mentioned, I DID receive the notice that they are closing the ticket.  Thanks again.

Video sometimes appears in what is called a "layered window".

You might want to download a trial version of Camtasia and see if you are able to capture the video using Camtasia. I know the Recording feature of Camtasia offers an option that you are free to enable and disable that is titled "Capture layered windows".

If you try Camtasia and find that you are still unable to record YouTube, try enabling that option and if it works, you may need to upgrade to Camtasia to continue. Because to my knowledge, SnagIt does not offer the same ability.

Cheers... Rick :)

Thanks, guys, I appreciate your time responding. But the bottom line is that I paid for a product and the publisher (TechSmith) doesn't respond to a major problem. Buying yet a second product from that same unresponsive publisher and expecting better service is the definition of insanity.

Is this forum the only means you have used to try and hear from TechSmith? If so, that's a bit unfair as they do actually have a dedicated support area. In this area we do see them regularly pop in, but it's also largely user to user.

Here is a link to support:

Hey Manny,
I'm still looking for the  " Very simple,  easier than recording and free".  I believe what you say but what's your workflow?
I select download and get this menu that is so long you can actually scroll to the bottom. Every choice is just a piece of the overall video. If you select all and download I end up with 30 files on my desktop and none of them work. I get one video minus audio and it's a very small resolution as well. I've included a screen shot of both situations.  What am I missing?

The Maxthon browsers downloader over rides IDM and wont let it open on you tube at all. IDM is straight forward. Hover over the resolution you want and click on it. Hit download in a pop up window, done.

Regards, Joe

So that's you using Maxthon, right?  It gives all the options available for the different video resolutions which are available at You Tube.  However, it does seem like there's a bug in this version because I also get errors on my downloads.  The YouTube downloaded videos don't play.

In the past, particularly with an embedded video on a web page where the author has selected a specific resolution, what you got is one file that you could download and would play.  That's pretty darn simple.  But here I don't know if this is a Maxthon issue or just YouTube blocking.

So, you're right, at the moment this is a nasty piece of workflow but it was incredibly simple to do and I'm sure whatever the problem is they will fix it.

I played around for a little bit and the file you should download is the one labelled * - YouTube_1.mp4.  That one works for me but none of the others do.  To make this general I suppose the file should be    * - YouTube_1.*   I would think mp4 isn't always the main filetype.

I'll dig around some more and see what the Maxthon folks say at their forum when I have time.   I've been using this browser for years and really like it. However, there's no control on the video floatbar in the Settings other than just turning it off.

Thanks Manny.
You tube offers several resolutions and formats. The top Image is IDM. The lower one is Maxthon. A bug certainly makes sense.

I can run IDM in any other browser.  I also enabled permissions for the Maxthon cloud browser in IDM. I can't find any oter Maxthon exe.'s to enable.

IDM runs normally on a lot of web pages in Maxthon. But you tube tutorials are my biggest interest. Can't beat the internet for that.  See Image.
Clearly, Maxthon has a lot of well thought out features. The select and drag to bring up a web page on the selected topic is very cool indeed. I get some display anomalies but no deal breakers.

I can just use IDM in another browser until they straighten things out. Their downloader should offer all the resolution and format possibility's, like in the IDM Image. I prefer IDM because it separates my downloads into separate categories and folders.

That's what I'm most interested in doing. There must be a way, I would think. I will try to figure it out as well.

Also remember that Maxthon has two rendering engines and behaves differently for each one.  You can click the symbol to the right of the address bar to change engines.  Sometimes just changing engines makes some things work.
