Snagit Constantly Popping Up "This action cannot be completed because..."

Over the last 2 months, Snagit 12 is constantly popping up with this message:

This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.  Chose 'Switch to' to activate the busy program and correct the problem."

I've read a 2 year old thread where the reply from TechSmith was that your computer may have something else running consuming resources.

- This is the only program that has this problem
- I have very few other things running
- This is an i7 Desktop with 32GB of RAM and SSD drives.  Speed / performance is not an issue
- I have task manager open when this happens, and I'm not over 3% CPU, 20% memory and 2% disk

There are no other programs to blame.

I have rebooted dozens of times over the last few months, including full power downs.  That's not the issue either.

What else would be causing this?  More importantly, how do I fix it?

I really don't want v13, I've tried it, didn't like it at all, reinstalled v12.

Thanks

Hi Chris;

If you try running Snagit with elevated privileges (while Snagit is completely closed, right-click on the Snagit32.exe app in the install directory and choose "Run as Administrator"), do you have this issue? Have you opened a support ticket? If so, do you have your ticket ID that you can share with me so I can look up your  case?

What a shame that a program that I've used and recommended for years (since about version 8) would go to pot.

I've had that problem on and off for about 2 years through 2 versions and multiple updates. I have had multiple tickets on it and I'm convinced that SnagIt is fighting with Windows and Office for control over the window file and graphic system. No other program I've ever ran caused that pop-up. I've deleted and reloaded the program multiple times and it goes away for awhile and then comes back. Now, I have given up and just work around it.

Hi Robert - I'm running both Snagit & Snagit Editor as Administrator and it is still having the problems.  I've opened a support ticket with the info above, that we are running as Administrator, etc.

Thanks

@Marty, I try to work around it.  But I tend to mark up the images a lot.  I try to draw a box, it hands (and I have to hit retry) 3-4 times to get the box drawn with a cursor in it.  Then I start to type, it hangs 3-4 times (and hit retry 3-4 times) and I can type.  Then I try to draw another element, and so on and so on.  It's really become unusable.

Hi all

FWIW, I too see that message regularly. Normally when I see it, it's because I've right-clicked an image and chose the option to edit in SnagIt. I'm probably incorrect in my assumptions, but I've got SnagIt 12 AND SnagIt 13 on my system. I always figured it had something to do with the system not exactly knowing which version to open as I right clicked. For example, perhaps that right-click option is trying to open verision 12 and I have version 13 running.

For me, I just open the SnagIt editor and click file and browse to the image. It hasn't bothered me yet to the point where I uninstall both 12 and 13 and reinstall each. But I also know that it could continue even with a reinstall.

Cheers... Rick :)

BUMP

Has anyone come across a fix for this?  Support didn't have one, other than "Reinstall Windows" ...

Sheesh ...

It is frustrating.  Sometimes it works just fine.  Other times, I now have to hit RETRY five times (5x) just to do one action (like draw a text bubble).  Then another 5 times to type in it.  Then another 5x to draw an arrow.  This is nuts.

No other program on the machine has these issues.

It is unpredictable and does not seem to correlate to other commonly used apps being open or closed.

I did find this post on Microsoft talking about fixing code in your programs so this error does not occur:

Hi Chris;

It looks like our Tech sent a response on August 7th asking to do a settings clear to effectively reset Snagit to it's original settings; no response was sent after that request. I have found no other tickets nor any reference to reinstalling Windows. Do you have the ticket number of that conversation so I can review the various steps that the tech had you perform?

Can you resend that response?  I did not receive a response, but I did receive the email "Request received ..."

Hello Chris;

Since the ticket has been inactive since August 7th I have created a follow-up ticket and re-emailed you the instructions. Please make sure you check your spam filters/junk folder to ensure you are receiving TechSmith emails.

Thank you.  Those registry edits did not help.

I got it working (for now) and can't say it is a long term fix, but here's what has help so far this morning:

- Complete uninstall
- CCleaner registry cleaning
- Reinstall

During the reinstall, I selected virtually NO options (check boxes) for added features, except for Screencast.  I removed Camtasia, Dropbox, My Places, Windows Explorer Integration, etc.

With just that one option (Screencast) which is really what I use the most, it is working so far.  We'll see how it holds up.

Thanks

I had the problem and fixed the problem by archiving my old library with a different name, and then started a practice of cleaning my library after each use. If I want to save a capture or edit, I save it with a different name to a different file. I leave nothing in the library long term. Just a suggestion.

Appreciate that Marty.  I don't have too much in there, but keeping it clean & lean is a good idea.

I did notice that one of the default options during installation was to integrate into Windows Explorer.  I'm wondering if that integration was a problem, since you're getting deeper into Windows itself with that one.

So far, so good, no lags all day.  The only option from installation was Screencast, I removed everything else from Camtasia, YouTube, etc., etc.,   Lean & clean :)

Awesome, i haven't had any issues sincei started to do that and run SnagIt in Admin Mode. Those 2 things have really helped with this problem. Best of luck.. I'm in technical customer service and itis my most used program next to Outlook. I Love it. I find it indispensible.

I'm getting this message every time I capture an image,  running MacOS 10.13.6 and Snagit Version 2018.2.3 (90456).
