SnagIt editor has stopped working

I have been having intermittent occurrences of this since I installed 2018, and it persists despite the app having been repaired and reset.  Up until now I have been unable to isolate any cause.

Just now though I could replicate it, so I have found ONE potential cause.

I had taken a full width screenshot of a 2760 x 1440 screen minus the top two rows of the browser.  I resized the image to 1600px wide so I could work on it. "Always shrink to fit" was off.  I was working with a callout box in the top left corner, and extended it off the canvas to the left and top, the canvas being auto-resized in the process.  I was trying to grab the lower of the two handles for repositioning the pointer base.  I could not, because the problem with cursor accuracy had kicked in, and the reposition cursor just would not appear.  I was hunting for it when the error message appeared.

On restarting SnagIt and returning to that image, all the callout text was gone.

And, to complicate matters even further. see the text toolbar?  That's an artifact that keeps happening.  I was doing some text editing several actions ago, and the toolbar won't go away.

There you go Techsmith, a multi-faceted error for you.

BTW, there is nothing in the Event Viewer

Tech Support came up with a fix:

1) Close out of Snagit so that it is not running at all
2) Hold down the Windows key on your keyboard and hit the R key to open the Run window.
3) In the Run Window, type the following and then hit Enter: %appdata%\techsmith\
4) Right click on the features.json file and open it in Notepad
5) Change the "Direct2D11" line to false
6) Reopen Snagit and see if the same behavior occurs

If the same problem happens, repeat the steps above. However this time, change Direct2D10 to false as well.

Wish this worked for me. Tried both settings and nada. Editor still cr@ps out about 60 seconds after opening. Win 10, 64bit, Snagit 2018 latest build.

I have a work laptop and my recent update from Win 7 to 10 caused this crashing issue (Snagit version 2018). Was working fine in Win 7. When the JSON file edit mentioned above did not work I dug into the event viewer. Found that when Editor crashes there is a reference to a .dll file. Looked online for programs crashing and this file. Found a reference to possible conflicting graphics drivers.

I disabled the generic Intel profile and kept the dedicated Nvidia drivers. So far, Editor has remained open for hours now! Finger's cross this fixes everything. I also kept the JSON file to false for the two entries and NOT going to tempt fate by messing about and putting settings back to true!
