Snagit Mac OS version very buggy

Lately I'm getting very frustrated and disappointed with Snagit for Mac. It is buggy, sluggish and sometimes even crashes my Mac. For the record, I'm running it latest MacBook Pro '17 and High Sierra. I have enough resources to run Photoshop and other resource heavy applications with no issues but Snagit is sluggish and buggy.
In addition, this same behavior I experienced in my 2015 Mac Pro as well.
This is unacceptable for such application!

Hi,

Sorry about the issues! We're aware of a few crashes and performance issues and we're working to improve that. Regarding your comment about it being buggy, are there specific bugs you're running into? Are there specific functions that are slow, or is it a general problem?

I would say general problem. Haven't kept track of specific issues. But today it crashed when I was trying to cancel video capture and actually forced my computer to restart as well.

Yikes! That's no fun. What version of Snagit are you running?

If you run into any specific bugs that are getting in your way, let us know.

I also can confirm that since upgrading to Snagit 2018 for Mac I have had nothing but issues with the software.  It will consume large amounts of CPU, crash repeatedly when I click the capture button and operate very sluggish and slowly.  It has almost become unusable and I am on the verge of going to another vendor because this is ridiculous.

I am using a late 2017 MacBook Pro w/16Gb ram, discrete graphics card and i7 2.9Ghz processor running Mac OSX High Sierra so there is plenty of horsepower to run the software.  I have been unable to find any information regarding this issue and innumerable automatic crash reports have been sent to Techsmith.  What gives???

SnagitHelper is the app that does all the capturing, although if it's been running for a long time it could start to slow down a bit. We have a fix for that shipping very soon. In the mean time, if you fully quit Snagit and the SnagitHelper and then relaunch Snagit, does that improve things for you?

No, not really,  If I l kill and rerun the program I can usually complete the capture but the doggy performance remains.   So obviously cannot kill SnagitHelper thus can I go back to a previous version or the 2018 version the only one that works with Mac OSX High Sierra?

There are a couple of things you can try:

1 - If you go into Snagit's preferences and disable "send anonymous usage information" and then restart Snagit that might improve things a little bit
2 - You can try our 4.1.8 version, but I don't think much changed between that and 2018
3 - You can open a ticket with our Tech Support team and they can try to work with you to figure it out
4 - You can try our 2018.1.1 update when it comes out (I can post here when it's live) and see if that improves it

I hope one of these solves the problem for you!

Thanks for your help.  I'll disable the sending of usage info and not sure what I'll do next.

Hi,

Our 2018.1.1 update is available and has some improvements to the capture slowdown issue. If you have a chance, we'd love to know if the update improves it for you.
