Snagit should warn if you lack memory to finish a video

I recorded a 13 minute video (in medium resolution), using the webcam and snagit.   Then I tried to save it as an MP4.   It told me I lacked memory, and would not save it.   (It would have been almost 4 Gigabytes).   I was using a laptop with plenty of drive space, but the memory I think was the bottleneck.   It would be nice if Snagit tells you when you start recording a video a message such as: "with your memory limit - don't exceed 6.32 minutes at this resolution" or something helpful like that.

I'm not sure what went wrong for you? That may be a good question to run by tech support.

I save all my recordings to the Library. That's the default setting in editor preferences.

I shut that off as an experiment and did 2 recordings out of curiosity. One was 4 min or so and the other was 7+.
I had the editor open the first time. Then decided to close it for the second recording. Opting not to save changes to the 1st recording without giving it a thought.

The next recording terminated. The editor popped open and I shut it down as previously stated. Not saving the recording.

My Point?

SnagIt records to mp4 on the fly. Its saved to file as you record. But it's a temporary one. If you have user preferences set to save all recordings to the Library.
You should have a copy of that video available to you. Unless there was an error at the termination of the recording.

Both of my Test Videos were deleted permanently and are nowhere to be found. As if I canceled the recording instead of stopping it.

I don't know if this information will help you or not? I always save my captures and videos to the Library. I've never lost a recording. Perhaps that's why? I don't use SnagIt record much.I'm a Camtasia user. But I've pushed SnagIt, ran tests in the past. Recorded long duration videos of several GB. For whatever that's worth?

The only time SnagIt re-renders a video is when you edit it. Because it's already a completed mp4. It you save as is.The save is instantaneous, because you're only renaming the file actually. Unless you're sending it to another drive.

In conclusion, this on the fly recording can be in theory be Huge, as large as your C drives free space,"Pretty much" and memory should not be a factor. Recordings are not saved in RAM memory. So I can't explain that error.

I can only recommend you consider saving the recordings to Library. If you do this a lot, the practice can effect the lifespan of a SSD. As you can only write so much information to one before it starts to fail.
