SnagIt Spotlight effect no longer working with multiple selections?

Hi everyone,

I've been using Snagit on a daily basis for more than 10 years now and kept upgrading quite regularly my software. This morning, I took a screenshot where I needed to highlight few areas and went naturally selecting several areas (using Shift + rectangle selection tool) and went to use the Spotlight effect... willing to blur the non selected area and dim it as well.

For some reasons I really have the feeling that this was working with multiple selections since quite some time now... but this morning, I got suprised to see that the entire image was getting dimmed and blurred entirely and ignoring my selection...

I could not believe my eyes.

Could someone from TechSmith reply here and confirm this is indeed expected behavior, confirm that indeed, multiple selection within SnagIt Editor does not allow the "Spotlight" effect and only works on one single selection?
As this always been the case? Have I dreamed about this feature and finally always made a single selection without really noticing it?

I was about to create an incident but I'll wait for more feedbacks on that one.

Thank you guys.
Kind regards,

PS: Windows 10 (Professional 64 bits), SnagIt 13.1.5 (32 bits) (Build 8014) - Nov 3 2017

You can have multiple spotlights. Just make multiple selections before adding the Spotlight effect.

To make multiple selections, press and hold the shift key. Then click and drag to select.

Cheers... Rick :)

oooh, so you do confirm that we can do this, then. I was not dreaming it!
That's what I try doing... but for some reason it no longer works!

It blurs everything out... I'll try to restart SnagIt and will post a picture of what I get.

@Rick Stone: What version are you checking with?  Is it also SnagIt 13.1.5?

I get the same problem as @Nicow and I'm on the same version - I know how it should work, but it's not working like that.  I have found that if you change/tweak the 'zoom' slider a couple of points and then change back the multiple selection is recognized which avoids restart processes etc. and hence is slightly better.  Demo video here:

Yeah, my bad. I must have spaced off before getting to the bit where the version was mentioned. After seeing the comments about always regularly upgrading, I kind of assumed that Nicow was using the latest 2018 release. My bad.

@Rick, indeed, I could have... but I did not upgrade to the latest version yet... I usually take my time before upgrading.

@Mark THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH ! So I was not dreaming, it used to be working but in a way or another, it got screwed at some point. Thanks for the tip.

@TechSmith, to me, this seriously looks like a glitch it would be good to fix for those still on the same version as I am, don't you think?

I have been noticing issues with multi-selections and "Spotlight & Magnify" for awhile now, not sure when it started, but I can confirm I have the latest version of 2018 and it does this (ignores selections) to me as well. I need this functionality, it's one of the reasons I use Snag It, so any information would be appreciated.

I agree,  in this image I made 12 selections. SnagIt wouldn't apply Any Dim to the image at All.

I was attempting to apply 72% and got nothing. I played around with all the sliders and still got nothing.

If I applied Blur, Things really got screwy. It pretty much converted all the selections into Dimmed areas.

Same issue here.  Last update I see is from 2 months ago from Joe Morgan that this is a known issue.  I upgraded from v10 to v18.  Multiple selections would apply "spotlight" function just fine in v10.

v18.1.0, Build 775 (2018-JAN-25) has the bug.

The newest version of SnagIt 2018.1.1 seems to work on images just fine.
Here's an example.

I discovered that on white images, you have to invert the selection to get it to work.

Here's the effect applied to a inverted selection.

I'll hit undo and make some normal selections.
So, I would consider this a bug.But it can be overcome.

Sorry, it's still a fail on my system.  (Rebooted after install to confirm it wasn't that.)

I'm having the same issue since recently updating. I am on Version 2018.2.1 (64 Bit) (Build 1590) - 6/25/2018.

Edited: I would like to also add that the Spotlight & Magnify for a single selection only works properly if I use the rectangle. If trying to use the circle, it won't work.

It occasionally happens in longer and/or older threads where a solution or bandaid is provided for the issue at hand.  And following suit, if the forum software doesn't allow for a "Mark as Answer", the solution can go unseen by more recent contributors to a thread.  As is the case here, @Mark posted such a solution above.

Essentially, after you make your multiple selections, simply add Zoom (via the slider) and then remove it.  That seems to maintain the multiple Spotlight selections.

I think it's good that there is a band-aid solution in place, but I think it's important this actually gets fixed proper at some point in the future. It's been a bug/glitch present in several full version upgrades now.

EDIT - I see 4 months ago I posted that this was working, and I just tried it again on my version and it is STILL working for me. Version 2018.1.1 (64 Bit) (Build 924) - Mar 15 2018. Did it get broken in the latest update?

EDIT2 - I upgraded to Version 2018.2.1 (64 Bit) (Build 1590) - 6/25/2018 and it's still working here, no issues for me.

Just to update this thread - I'm using 2018.2.2 (64 Bit) (Build 2240) - 13/09/2018 and I'm experiencing the issue, but the workaround to adjust the zoom level is still a valid workaround.
