SnagIt v13 - when?

Some (or maybe many?) are still sticking to v11.x , because v12 was (a bit of) a disappointment to them.
Same with me. Hopefully v13 will bring along some improvements that may persuade v11 users to upgrade.

Considering that past updates usually were every few months and the latest v12-version is already 8 months old now (released 25 August, 2015) - I am anxious to know the forecast and improvements of v13.

Like you - I did not upgrade to v12 but stayed with v11 in view of the multiple negative issues. Based on that I will be waiting for some time after v13 is released (whenever that is) to see what v13 users have to report before even considering upgrading to v13.

Great! Regretfully I can't get it working on VMware, see my other thread.

I think I found the other thread. Looks like you got everything up and running once you got the firewall issue resolved. Enjoy the new Snagit!

Hi Daniel,

I just downloaded the new v13 a few days ago and have been very disappointed by the poor work flow implemented which requires much more mouse movements and drop-down selections to perform basic tasks. How can I get a refund so I can roll back to v12?

Thanks,

-Gary

Hi Gary - I'm sorry you're not finding the new version to your liking. You can contact TechSmith by phone or open a support ticket to request a refund.

Hi gmelerine,

I was with you on this - INITIALLY.

And, because I am sort of compulsive about all-things "workflow and process" oriented, I actually tracked this and counted the steps to do "stuff". So, below is just my honest opinion.

Overall, I found the actual number of steps (for me) were either reduced OR stayed the same. It only seemed like there were more steps because things were so different and I had to do a little bit of hunting and pecking around at first.

Also, the UI is MORE customizable so you can save your favorite things, like tool and styles, where you find them to be most convenient.

I would recommend anyone considering trying the new Snagit to install it and use it for 15 days on the free trial. It will take at least a week to make a real call on whether the workflow is better or not (I think). During that trial time, customize the tools, add your favorite arrows and shapes to the quick styles, change the colors of the canvas and background, etc. to make it your own.

After the trial is up, go back to your old Snagit and see if you still believe the older version is better than the new. If it is, then at least you have given it a fair shake.

Of course, if you purchased the new version and have found it to not to be better, then our Customer Service  team is always ready and willing to help you with a refund.

Thanks Kelly for taking the time with this detailed reply. It is always appreciated.

I did roll back to v12 today and find it much more intuitive and easy to use. With v13, the "number of clicks" may have been similar for some operations, but having to constantly scroll to the top to select Text / Fill / etc. and then to the Properties on the far right to select dropdown menus and change settings added a lot of mouse time. The previous Ribbon allowed quicker selections with less mouse movement / hunting, in my opinion.

Regards,

-Gary

Gary, I'm curious about what task you're doing. If you're creating boxes filled with a solid color that have text on top, the most optimal approach would be to use the Callout tool. This should put everything at your fingertips:

Also, there are keyboard shortcuts you could use to switch between tools with no mousing needed. Press Ctrl-1 for the left-most tool in your toolbar, Ctrl-2 for the second, and so on.

Perhaps your task is something else entirely, though.  :)

Daniel, there is no way that having to click off the top menu bar, then scroll to the Properties menu on the far right to make a drop down selection, then scroll back up to the top menu bar again for the next change is more efficeint than the v12 Ribbon. I use a standard 22" monitor and there is plenty of room for a Ribbon to avoide these back and forth mouse movements. Many people have already complained about this in various posts and having to customize basic tasks like these to speed up productivity is not a solution. This is why many loyal users are rolling back to v12 in droves. As requested in several posts, TechSmith should return the v12 Ribbon and keep its core members happy.

Respectfully,

-Gary
