SnagIt 12 color scheme is so dark - can it be changed?

The color scheme change selector seems to have disappeared from Editor Options > General and I can't find it anywhere. Is it hiding or gone?

I agree, Jason should not be allowed to reply to any Community Forums. His wording and phrasing has something to be desired.

I have worked in Field Support for many years and one fundamental rule is no matter how silly a comment or opinion a customer may have, they are serious and want to be taken seriously. Jason's comment about the people upgrading are the only ones complaining. He has minimized the loyal customers, if not ignoring them. Jason is totally missing the point. The point is, the people who have used Snagit for years know better, the newbees do not. The people who have used previous versions have a history and can compare and contrast with the new. The new people have nothing! Jason's argument doesn't stand up when someone really thinks about it. And that's why it upset so many people.

To refresh everyones memory, Jason stated;

"Right now, we’ve heard from one set of customers, but haven’t heard enough from the broader customer base to warrant adding the option to change your Snagit “theme”. We are actively listening to customer feedback through all of our channels and communities to observe whether our goals of making Snagit easier to use and more approachable by customers first experiencing Snagit have succeeded."

@Jason - "Right now, we’ve heard from one set of customers, but haven’t heard enough from the broader customer base to warrant adding the option to change your Snagit “theme”. "

Excuse me, but... what??

When I started this thread 3 weeks ago, perhaps I should have stated up front that I was a NEW USER considering purchasing SnagIt because it was widely recommended among tech writer circles, and I'm also a happy Camtasia user. I've never used SnagIt before. Ever. However, with the incredibly stubborn stance TechSmith appear to have taken about sticking with the dark UI, it seems that not only are you happy to alienate your existing customer base, but also prospective new customers. Like me. The way you've managed to obfuscate the issue with your two official responses alienates me even further (although that last one made me laugh out loud in astonished disbelief).

Still, TechSmith will probably do nothing unless revenue and profits take a significant enough hit to warrant investing in developing theme options - and those of us complaining are probably well aware of that cold, hard fact.

So I'll be sticking with MadCap Capture. And if TechSmith's attitude seeps through to Camtasia, I'll now be quite happy to drop it like a hot potato and go back to MadCap Mimic and/or Articulate. You have excellent competitors in the market, TechSmith - these are some.

Indeed, when I read his second response I wondered if this was some kind of bizarre social experiment to see how much it takes to drive away the majority of your users.

I've been using SnagIt for years .... have always recommended it ... and I have now stopped doing that! I just read the reply from Jason and I am shocked!
When he says:
We absolutely love our customers and as you can imagine, it pains us to know that decisions we've made are affecting anyone in a negative way, but we also feel compelled to evolve Snagit to ensure customers can be successful with it.
Here is what he is really saying -- 'We feel we can get enough new customers that we don't have to worry about our loyal base. These new folks will never realize SnagIt was once easy and enjoyable to use ... and they won't bother us with trivial things .... like making the interface easy to see!'

I've been using SnagIt for so long I never looked at any of the competitors ... I'm so happy that "westiechik" just recommend MadCap Capture -- I am on my way over there to check them out!

Bye Bye SnagIt ....

Add me to the list.

The new color scheme -- combined with the loss of features -- is a **total deal breaker**.
I have been a long-time, daily user on all of my home and work rigs.
And I have enthusiastically recommended Snagit to many colleagues and friends.
But the end has come.
I will stay with version 11 until my licenses expire and then will look for another product.

This is a tool, not a "hip and cool" lifestyle decoration.
The new version's UI/UX is a total disaster - I agree with what all those who have posted before me have already said.
I am shocked and saddened to see that one of my favorite productivity applications has jumped the shark, and that an outstanding company has unilaterally and paternalistically decided what's best for its customers.

WOW -- how did it ever come to this?!?!

<SMDH>
Crying shame.

I too have been surprised by Techsmith's attitude here. As a long time user of Snagit and Camtasia I have been a happy customer until now. I can only assume that they are under new, inexperienced management. I mentioned the situation to a friend who lectures at a business school and he is very keen to follow this as a case study for his students on "how not to treat your customers" and on "market testing your product plans".

Whoever decided that only allowing for a black background on the editor canvas made a bad mistake.  Everyone works under different conditions and with different computers.  Everyone sees things slightly differently too.  PLEASE allow for us to be able to change that black background.  It is SOOOOOO hard to see when I'm working from my laptop.  It's not as bad when I'm on a big screen but I do a lot of my work remotely on a laptop.  It's nearly impossible to see the contrasts with most images because of the black canvas.  Give us options please!

Just how big an outcry do you need? This is the worst reaction I have seen to a new release.

I don't know what's worse, the degradation of an outstanding product, or the total loss of corporate customer service/responsiveness.
The sheer arrogance of the "we know what's best for our longstanding, loyal, paid customers" argument defies comprehension and logic.

One can only hope that "Corporate" will reassign the children responsible for this debacle to other tasks, and restore some adults to fixing Snagit and to attending to its future development as the awesome tool it once was.

Perhaps they are counting on inertia among loyal users?
Back "in the day", Snagit was the only game in town.
Now, with so many competitors, we will have no choice but to vote with our wallets.
Yes, there will be a learning curve for new software, but I see no alternative at this time.

It is truly sad to see both the product and the brand ruined in one fell swoop.
The product could be fixed by restoring many of the UI/UX features removed or changed in v12.
I'm not sure about the brand, though, absent significant corporate soul-searching and renewed commitment to customer service and responsiveness.

Skin to change layout design.

The new black is hard to work with. I can't see borders and it's hard to know which button etc is activated. Please let us use a custom skin or switch between this Snag-it layout and something that is more windows standard.
I have been an avid Snag-it user since I don't know which version. 2? When I upgraded I started to look for ways to change at least colors since I was sure that it must be included. But no... Maybe you whole design team did this during a very wet all-nighter?
Apart from the layout - A great product!

I am a brand new user and I cannot understand why, for the love of Pete, anyone would prefer the black background and white lettering. Change it. It is dreadful and I absolutely hate it. My boss is using version 11 and I'm going to ask him to stay with it. This really is very arrogant of you.

Good Afternoon,

TechSmith will be adding the option for a light theme in Snagit 12.

I sincerely apologize for the frustration and angst this topic has caused for all of you and furthermore that it has served as a hindrance to your relationship with TechSmith and your love for Snagit.

I felt compelled to weigh this decision against the large number of inputs and feedback mechanisms that TechSmith has as well as the goals we set out to achieve with this release and with the vision of the product and company.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, Snagit 12.1 will be releasing in early July (with Dropbox sharing, rotatable objects, customizable background color and more), however development is very near completion so this new theme option will be slated for the release following 12.1. I don't have a hard date on when the next release will be complete, but a portion of the team has already started working on this light theme.

In the coming week, I will be reaching out with a few mockups for our idea of the light theme in hopes to gain your insights and feedback.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Jason

But after witnessing the horrid response to loyal customers - I will not be upgrading until I see this!

So easy it is to hurt the trust and loyalty of people (take note all entrepreneurs!)

Jason, if you run a color contrast checker (such as http://snook.ca/technical/colour_contrast/colour.html), you will see that there is not enough difference in color between your #CDCDCD foreground color and #333333 background color in the ribbon.

I haven't read all these comments, but this move. releasing 12.0 with a black background for the editor is a colossal mistake. It shows a complete lack of management acumen at Techsmith and a insular and insulated product development team. There is no excuse for this. Based on this alone, I will probably never upgrade to version 12.

I've been using SnagIt for years. I just started a new job and they gave me SnagIt 12. When I went to set up the tool the way I like to use it, I could not find how to change the foreground color. Trying to crop black images on a black background is impossible. I've had to resort to using Adobe PhotoShop! I need this feature now. Like, right now.

Looking forward to that, because I'm also getting REALLY sick of constantly getting the pop-up reminder that there's a newer version and I should update. Any way to turn that off??? I'll be happy to buy it and download it as soon as the new update is available.

@Clynch: If you are running version 11.3 or newer, you can turn off the updater notification in the program preferences for Snagit.

@AwanalTTrainer: Yes, if you are running version 12.0 you will be notified that there is an update ready to be installed.

Jason:

Enable automated update checking is NOT selected, but I stil get the messages to update to 12. Is that because I installed and then uninstalled 12?

Also, because I uninstalled 12, I will not be notified that the update is ready. Will there be an announcement on the TechSmith home page when the update with  the option to change the canvas background is available?  And what about the theme - will it still be the "white" (which to me looks like a dark gray) on black only?

I just got the new SnagIt 12.1.  I already like it!  I will keep my old version 11.4 around (just in case I need to do a text capture, which is rare for me) but now that I can change the SnagIt Editor background color, I have set this version to be my default.

Thanks, SnagIt Dudes and Dudettes!

Okay, so now I can change the background color ... thank you.

But, for me, it's the ribbon interface too that I want to change. As it is there is little to no contrast between the tabs and their background ... shades of dark and darker grey !

Consider Outlook, there's a clear definition ...

Same with my CAD system ...

I agree with Paul. The gray-on-charcoal color scheme of the ribbon (shown below) continues to be very difficult for me to see.  compare this to what Paul shows in other common programs, above.

Here's another absurd so-called feature in version 12:

"Enhanced Capture Experience. Snagit now lets you choose whether to use image or video after you make the selection."

How exactly does it help me to have to make a choice I did not have to before. In Version 12 whenever I would invoke  Snag-it with the hotkey, I would be forced into making an  extra decision and waste an extra mouse click for no good reason over and over over and over over and over over and over again.

There are some people at this company who do not understand user interfaces or are too immature to be in positions of responsibility. This is reminiscent of Window 8.  If you paid me $500.00 to switch to Version 12, I'd tell you to keep the money. I have lost complete confidence in this company.

SnagIt 12 Editor Menu and Ribbon Bar Background Color.

First, let me say, I fell in love with SnagIt over FullShot because of the scrolling window capture option years ago!

I lived through the changes from 9.x to 10.x with minimal issues. I have never complained - until today...

I just purchased the upgrade to 12.x today. I absolutely HATE the black ground on the Ribbon. It is SO hard to see the ribbon options.

Before I upgraded, I read about the changes. I was concerned that the ribbon bar and menu options were black, but I thought/hoped there would be a way to change the color. So...

Is there any way to configure the color on the ribbon and menu bar? I can change the main background color but not the others.

I don't want to extort an option, but I might request a refund because the black ground is distracting. I create design specifications and images are a huge part of my work. I really cannot look at the darkness all day.

Please advise. I hope there is a solution.

Thanks!
Sandy

Giving 12.1 a try for a while.  The ribbon color scheme really looks terrible (still).  I've changed the background to light grey and want to see if there are any redeeming features in the software that would lead me to live with it.  (NOTE: not "like" it, but "live with" it).  I still have ver 11 installed and on standby.  ;-)

I will be staying with version 11 for the foreseeable future. I cannot get past the ugly black toolbar. I don't care if there are any features I like better. Version 11 suits me just fine. Let us know when you bring back the choice of lighter toolbars and I will try again otherwise I'm not wasting my time. I'm tired of reading this issue so I am disconnecting from this thread. It's the new Coke vs the Classic Coke all over again. You may think the customer doesn't know best but I'm certain you will change your mind when you see the drastic drop in sales in your next quarterly report. I can't believe you spent two months only half way resolving this. Simply amazing!

Charles, I would agree with you. And the real folly as I see it is that if they aren't hearing any complaints from new users, it's only because they simply assume that's the way things are. They have likely heard from others how awesome SnagIt is (or was) and they make an assumption that everyone else is happy as a clam with it.

I'm so very happy that they did listen to us and the next update will actually have a much improved color scheme. Anxiously awaiting that version to release. I'll install it again when I see it has. ;)

Cheers... Rick :)

Yes come on Techsmith, post some stats on people that like versus people that don't as you say this is driving your product management decisions?  You must have allowed enough time for people on both sides of the fence to have commented so you'll know the percentages for and against.  Or perhaps you are just to scared to admit that the people commenting, many of which have been using SnagIt happily for years, may just have some valid cause for complaint.

OK accepted that development on the 12.1.0 sprint may have already been underway and you couldn't fit in much new work but what of a 12.2.0 build to address these concerns.   At least allow us a Boolean option/decision of whether to show the "Classic" or "Modern" ribbons; take a leaf out of WinZip's book as they've been doing this for years to help their customers;  I think you have forgotten who ultimately pays your salaries!

[Edit:  and BTW I bet your competitors are just loving this negative feedback and "making hay" at your expense!]

Hey Everyone,

Great news! Snagit 12.2 went live this morning with a new, lighter theme you can toggle to.

Snagit should prompt you to update, but if not, go ahead and check for updates manually!

Here is a quick video showing you how to switch: http://screencast.com/t/01OjkGQFmnLl

Hope everyone enjoys!
