SnagIt 12 sets itself as default printer

I have problems when software makes changes without my consent, such as installing a cookie and hard driver cleaner and the product installs a toolbar and other crap.

During the install of SnagIt 12, I was never asked if I wanted the software to set itself as the default printer. Last night, when I went to print something to paper, SnagIt was the selected printer. It happened several more times this morning.

Yes, I realize it takes seconds to select a different print in the stable of available printers and print drivers, such as Acrobat, etc. The issue, though, is this is my computer and my computer is my digital home. Any software I buy or opt to install in my home is a guest and must act as a guest by asking my permission, especially if it wishes to move things, trash stuff, or change things -- especially looks or how things work -- in my home.

I set up my home for my convenience and speed. Having to fiddle around and select a printer when attempting to PRINT to paper is not my method of working. Having to reset my default printer back to what it should be -- and was -- takes about a minute or so total time, but it is still time wasted from my life, as I have already spent time customizing my home. I hate having to repaint the walls when visitors leave simply because they started painting the walls a color they preferred.

Speaking of repainting the walls ... I really, truly do detest the new color scheme. TechSmith are you going out of your way in attempts to make me go blind?

Software changing your system without permission is a big no no.  Come on Techsmith this is a big mistake and very arrogant of you.

Unhappy with new version of Snagit.

How do we combat Techsmiths self important delusions of grandeur.  Installing snagit changes my workspace by forcing the one click window on, it changes my default printer.  If you want to combat something, combat your own invasion of your customers space.  I want to use your product, not have it take over my computer!!!

Hey guys,

This shouldn't be happening (in fact, this is the first I've heard of it with this release). I promise you that we wouldn't do that, as much as we love Snagit around here... I don't think many of us would want it to be our default printer, either. I'm really sorry you two ran into this.

We've seen this bug before, but it seemed to have something to do with the network/printer the computer was connected to. At any rate, please get in touch with tech support if this happens again.

Happened to me when installing trial version on 8/23/14.  Default printer was set to working inkjet printer for weeks.  After installing SnagIt, couldn't figure out why a printer dialog kept coming up when trying to print a Word doc.  Discovered SnagIt had changed default printer on my system!!  Simple to fix, but took me several tries to figure out what had happened.

I'm on 12.3 and this regularly happens on Windows 7, 32 bit PC, I am constantly trying to print to my printer and finding the default set for no reason to Snagit. (Does anyone ever print in this way I wonder?)  It is frustrating, SnagIt is a good program (except for the awful colour scheme), but this is an annoyance that stops me recommending it to others.

Hey David! Sorry for the trouble - would you be willing to talk to a tech support agent to get this sorted out?

This is not just a "bug" limited to 12. I've had 4 different versions on SnagIt over the years and am currently running 11 and it changes my default printer after everytime I "Print to SnagIt" (to save as PDF or image file - for David's benefit) then I forget to change it, go to print something and have to wait for the memory hungry editor to boot up. I love SnagIt, don't get me wrong. It's totally awesome. But this is crazy and if it's truly a "bug" it's existed for years (at least 4 years from my experience) and over multiple version.

Uhhh. I know how to set my default printer dude. Please read thread. The problem is SnagIt also knows how to set my default printer and does after every time I use it for "printing" PDF Complete and all my other printers do not do this. SnagIt is the only "printer" I've ever seen set itself as default after every use without even prompting.

Agreed that the pics may be useful for others however. I'd like to "nice" my post up, however I can no longer edit my post.

I would agree with Kyle on this issue. I also know how to set my default printer up but others may not so it might help them if they have the same issue.

However I think this is something that TechSmith needs to look into and get fixed as if it is changing SnagIt to the default printer after printing to PDF or other then not changing back to your true default printer then this needs to be fixed. Just my opinion. Thanks Kyle and everyone for your posts and feedback here. Have a great day/night.

An update to Snag-It was installed and it resolved the problem. Here I am again with the same problem: Version 12.4.1 (build 3036). I have Snagit set up on two computers -same versions. Printer default works fine on one and is a mess on the other. The Snagit program with the problem even lists "copies of the same printer and other printers that do not exist.

Any word on any fixes?
Thank You

It appears now that Techsmith has resolved the printer-default problem. Thank You!

Problem Background:

Snag-it was continuously selecting my "HP-Fax" as my default printer. As such, I would have to manually change the printer selection to HP Printer (vs fax) each time that I selected "print". This became a very frustrating issue for me since I routinely use Snag-It much of the computer day.

Now, thanks to the TechSmith bug fix, I am allowed to just press enter to print and that will select my "Windows Default Printer".

Guess this is one of things that should never had occurred in the first place, but if use SnagIt as much as I do, you are darn sure happy when the developers respond.

It happened to me, too.  VERY annoying!
Actually, it's not set as the default, but it does show up first when I go to print.  That causes me to have to change my printer each time. VERY strange.

I had this same issue. if you go to the printer setting, make sure that the port it is using is the correct one, and not the snagit port. that fixed the issue for me
