Hello,
Right now we do not have plans to add web cam video to Snagit, but customer feedback plays an important role in determining what is in future releases.

Could you please describe how you use web cam? What would be important to you if we did add web cam in the future?

Thank you,
Tiffany

Hello Tiffany. I will explain how I use the web cam. I use it to COMMUNICATE with my students about their writing. I used to use JingPro as a kind of video coaching. I looked straight into the camera, greeted my student, laid out the 2 or 3 most important points, THEN turned to the captured document as an illustration.

Being able to give the lesson first "in person", in essence, look them right in the eye built relationships, credibility, and connection. Without the web cam, my students would only get to open up a picture of their own paper with my voice over. Because of the newness of this technology, they would be confused. What is this? What's happening. Without the web camera they don't get to see my expressions, my delight, my encouragement, my gestures. Now, it's just my voice. Curiously, your own advertisement/explanation of Snaggit talks about the "power of the visual." RIGHT! Exactly. Don't diminish the visual power of the HUMAN FACE and its ability to create connection and meaning.

I also used JingPro to give a "mini lecture" then turned to the screen capture as illustration.

I'm never going to use Snaggit to create comic book stuff like the things you advertise. The capacity to have a HUMAN connection through the web camera followed by the screen capture illustration made a incredibly powerful tool for teachers. Yes, Snaggit has the voice recording and the screen capture but it is a much less useful, easy, and valuable tool.

Heck, I used to give talks to faculty imploring them to use JingPro as this incrediblyecoaching tool to enhance their students' learning. Now . . . . pfft. There's DOZENS of screen capture competitors out there. Snaggit is just one more of them for which I paid $25 and can't imagine actually using in the future.

I'm really, really disappointed that your company killed off an incredibly valuable product so that we can add bells and whistles in a much more complicated user interface.

I won't be recommending that my colleagues spend any money on Snaggit

Part of what's so frustrating is that I've read many, many testimonials from your customers who asked for this feature in SNAGGIT, or at least to bring back Jing Pro, but I've yet to read even a SINGLE explanation from your company for WHY Jing Pro went away or WHY you'll not build web camera functionality into Snaggit.

Are you listening? I'm a reasonable person. Can you not explain?

Adrienne,

Your comments are well articulated and reasonable. Unfortunately, it appears that Techsmith doesn't care. If they cared, they'd be here bringing resolution to this thread that started immediately after the JingPro closure and Snaggit recommended upgrade roughly a year ago.

We're not important, so to help them realize their mistake, I'm choosing to give another company my money. I suggest everyone do the same.

I would like to have my webcam in the bottom corner showing me talking about what I am doing on screen. I bought Snagit because I thought it would do that because of this line on your sales page:
Webcam Image Capture

Add a personal touch.

Make sure they remember you! Add an image of yourself
to your screen captures with the new webcam image capture feature.

I liked jing but limited to 5 minute videos and it can only be webcam or screen not both at same time.....

I teach online and have greatly used the Jing Pro to communicate with my students. I start off with my webcam and then switch to my powerpoint notes to communicate specific information. It helps add a personal touch to what can become a very faceless experience.

I agree with this suggestion. That ability to add yourself in the video is a great way to personalize it. That was something I really liked about Jing pro. It should be added to Snagit so that it basically replaces the functionality of Jing pro.

So add another user vote in that bucket.

I was searching for the answer to this question and I am so bummed to learn that SnagIt lacks the features of JingPro. After learning how to do what I wanted to do with JingPro, I then found that JingPro was discontinued, So, I licensed SnagIt as suggested. Until this feature is added to SnagIt, does TechSmith (or anyone else) have advice on a free or inexpensive product that does what JingPro did in capturing from the webcam? Perhaps we can use snagit for the screen capture and something else for the webcam and no longer mix them into the same video (otherwise find editing software). Thanks.

I would have to put in a request for this feature to be added in SnagIt also. I miss this feature. So as Manny says "Throw my vote in the bucket too". Have a great day.

I do 10 live webinars each week and I can't tell you how many times I stop the webinar and show people Jing. I love it! Especially the video web cam insertion. I am sad to hear you have not included it in the SnagIt version. I did always wish that instead of 10fps you could have made it 30fps but I really miss the camera capability. Please reconsider.

I would really like this feature as well.. I used Jing Pro to take a quick snapshot pictures of myself (usually holding something) to easily share. No longer having this is a bit upsetting. I guess i can use PhotoBooth and then use snagit to cap a still of the web cam feed. I've been considering just going back to using Jing Pro until it stops working. There are still a lot of gotchas moving to snagit. Jing is just so easy to use, and so few steps needed to do what you want.

Reminder to everyone posting here, Vote!

If I could vote a million times I would. This is a feature from Jing Pro that in my opinion adds the greatest value to a screen recording. Not having it in SnagIt is a deal-breaker.

I realize for many, tutorials don't need a presenter, but presentations do. The audience is much more likely to engage with the video, comment and create community with a video or series of videos that aren't anonymous. Seeing an instructor's facial expressions directly impacts his or her ability to keep the audience engaged.

Until it's added, I imagine an entire segment of your demographic will not be able to justify the use of SnagIt for this purpose. A real shame with Jing Pro dissolving and this feature being tossed aside.

I am a middle school teacher who was going to use Jing Pro and its ability to capture video from our webcam to produce the morning announcements with my student reporters. I am so disappointed to learn that you have discontinued Jing Pro! (I finally convinced my principal to let us do video announcements instead of the dull audio version.) And, now to learn that SnagIt, the "replacement," doesn't have the webcam capability is very discouraging.

Has this been considered in the next update release or is it something they are planning on doing or not? Just curious.

Well it's been 6 months and still no reply from the product manager. Pretty disappointing. Maybe one day they will magically add the feature. Huge let down that makes me second guess putting snaggit on other computers in my office in favor of the alternative.

Please help snaggit team! Don't you realize the value this would add to your product!

I posted 3 months ago, see that's me up there. :) I don't think TechSmith is oblivious, instead they want us to purchase another one of their products, camtasia. They don't come out and say this, but their disinterest in this thread points to the writing on the wall. I don't know about everyone else, but I no longer have faith in the TechSmith lineup. The past was great, the present and future however looks disappointing.

Very well put Kyle. Thanks.

I also have camtasia which is over complicated for what we are all trying to accomplish here.

Jing was so nice and simple with webcam functionality before it was robbed from us with a replacement that house a ton of useless features no one cares about.

Hello,
I apologize for not updating this post. Thank you for continuing to share your feedback and requests for webcam in Snagit.

Recently, the team has focused on getting Snagit to work on the upcoming Windows 8 release and addressing audio issues with our video recording.

As a possible workaround, can you open a window with your webcam and record that along with your screen with Snagit? Or is it important that can switch back and forth between your webcam and your screen?

Again, I apologize for not responding, we are very interested in your feedback and do our best to prioritize all of our customer requests and suggestions.

Thank you,
Tiffany

Tiffany, thanks for your suggestion and in many cases that might work fine. For me, this issue is two fold...

One, the features in Jing Pro worked well and so if a product is intended to replace Jing Pro, Snaggit per TechSmith's suggestion, in my opinion - the replacement should be covering as many bases possible, especially the ones that could lead to a boycott of the brand if not acknowledged.

Second, for a presenter, the switch feature was something that allowed me to help my audience transition focus between the content and the presenter. Fighting with windows especially if you need to demonstrate clicks while having the presenter window up can be a pain. Overlap won't work because it will bring the clicked window to the front immediately.

I guess one could assume by the comments above, JingPro users are the ones feeling ignored. Please understand and don't take this personally, Snaggit may have more features but to the JingPro crowd those features mean nothing without the features of JP. I'm assuming if you were to bring back JingPro - everyone that was led to purchase Snaggit would return to JP cause Snaggit just doesn't work for their needs.

Tiffany,
That workaround is helpful but obviously not the solution we are looking for. Thanks for the update.

I agree that the webcam is an essential component of the video capture process. I use Snagit to support online teaching and learning, web video allowed me to establish a sense of presence in the captures.

Another vote for this feature... Snagit should contain everything that Jing does... :)
