You should be able to capture in the Windows 8.1 Metro Apps using a hotkey. Check out this tutorial for more details.

I hope this helps!

Windows 8.1 > Surface Pro 2 > Snagit 12 > I cannot capture video from the "Metro" Start screen.

When using Windows 8.1, Surface Pro 2, Snagit 12, I cannot capture video from the "Metro" Start screen

Here's the procedure I follow:
1. I open to the "Metro" Start Screen.
2. I use the Snagit 12 Capture hot key and Snagit12 Capture opens.

(FYI: Surface Pro Type keyboard does not have a PrntSrcn button but Fn+Space does the same thing)

3. I choose the capture area on the "Metro" Start Screen.
4. I choose the capture video icon
5. When I press the record button, the DESKTOP screen opens up and Snagit begins to capture video from the DESKTOP - not the "Metro" Screen.
6. When I stop recording, the Snagit 12 editor shows that it recorded video from the DESKTOP and not the "Metro" Screen where I intended to.

FYI: The Shift + F9 and Shift + F10 do not start, pause, or stop the recording on the "Metro" screen. Rather, they select tiles on the "Metro" screen. These hotkeys do work on the DESKTOP.

Image Capture on the "Metro" screen works fine.
Video Capture does not.

If you watch the video above (esp. starting at about 1:40), you'll see what's going on.

Seems that you're doing everything right but (right before you step #6) need to return to the Metro screen to record it. Snagit won't show up, but will be recording. The video shows this in more details.

Does this work for you?

Thank you for the help. I found the linked instructions before I started trying to record the Metro screen even though the instructions are for a previous version of Snagit.
Unfortunately, returning to the Metro screen did not record the Metro screen on the Surface Pro 2. It still records the desktop screen while I am looking at the Metro screen.
Reprogramming the capture, start and stop hotkeys does not fix the problem either.
I was able to solve the problem.
Well, sort of... I plugged in a traditional USB keyboard and was able to record video on the Metro screen using the default hotkeys.
It appears that Snagit 12 does not support the Microsoft Type Cover 2 keyboard for the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 at this time.
