SnagIt support for Dropbox, or other cloud-based solutions

I want to have support for cloud-based solutions (like Dropbox) in SnagIt, so that I can share SnagIt captures across multiple computers.

I am creating user documentation with screenshots from SnagIt & working across three different computers - it would be invaluable to have all the screenshots accessible automatically across the three computers.

I imagine that there will be many with similar demands.

Hi Mark,

You can accomplish what you are describing with Snagit on Mac, but unfortunately not Snagit Windows.

What you need to do is launch Snagit on Mac, navigate to the advanced tab within preferences, and change your autosave location to your dropbox folder. Snagit will then move all of your existing autosaved captures to the new location, as well as store all future captures there.

As for Windows, we'll be sure to mark down your feedback as a feature request.

I hope that helps!

I am glad to hear this feature is already available in the Mac version of the software.

I look forward to this potential setting option in the Windows version!

I'm able to use Save As from within the editor to my Dropbox folder. That automatically uploads and had I installed it on other computers I bet it would be shared as well.

What can't be done is locate "unsaved" captures in Dropbox because the data store, unfortunately, is in a fixed location. But if all you want is to share captures than the saved ones will work.

What we are missing is a way to have Snagit automatically copy the Dropbox public link to clipboard after capture like you can do with Jing.

THIS is the feature request I'd like to add pressure to.

I can accomplish uploading to Dropbox by choosing a save option and setting my dropbox folder as the destination, but then I must open an explorer window to go retrieve the dropbox URL.

Having a Dropbox integration into the software similar to Youtube etc. would be wonderful. I don't want to host some of my screen shots on screencast or other public sites, but it becomes a hassle to do this smoothly.

Sure, it would be nice to have, but that wasn't the original question.

Couldn't the OP's goal be accomplished with a custom profile? You can specify both the naming convention and the file location, and assign a keyboard shortcut.

In my case, Adam B's suggestion is what I was actually looking for when I stumbled upon this thread. I want a quick way to send a screenshot to someone without any hassle. The Image to Screencast.com profile, which I downloaded from TechSmith, works quite well. I just prefer the Dropbox public interface to the Screencast.com one. The latter has some stuff (like comments) that I don't want users to see, and I can't disable it unless I pay $100/year.

Snagit can use a profile to send captures to either a program, an FTP server or send an email. Unfortunately, it can't send a capture to a URL. It would be very nice if TechSmith programmers could figure out how to allow users to send captures to something like Dropbox or Sky Drive by themselves without a special output such as Screencast..

You can use a profile to save to the cloud by saving into your Dropbox or Skydrive folder. SnagIt does half the work; Dropbox or Skydrive sync handles the other half. The problem is it won't copy the Dropbox share URL for you (all Dropbox files can now have a share URL, but the user must initiate it, which would probably be the hardest thing to do programmatically, unless of course the Dropbox API supports this), as it does the Screencast share URL. That's the missing piece.

So for those who are ok with Screencast.com, you can take a screenshot and have the public share URL copied to your clipboard with just a hotkey (it's really slick, and is the best option I've seen so far aside from Box SimpleShare, which unfortunately has a dual monitor bug right now). One step. Very nice.

For those who want to save to Dropbox, it's 4 steps:

  1. hotkey to grab the pic and send it to the Dropbox folder.

  2. Navigate to the file in the Dropbox folder.

  3. Right-click, tell Dropbox to generate a share link

  4. Once Dropbox brings you to the public share link, copy the URL to your clipboard.

(For those whose Dropbox accounts were created before August 1, 2012, it's a little simpler, because they can save the screenshots to the Public folder, and copy the URL to the clipboard from the context menu.)

This is all for the PC; I don't know how the Mac experience compares.

There are definitely workarounds to get this done. It would just be a whole lot easier if you could send a capture to wherever you wanted. Be it dropbox, google drive, skydrive or whatever. The complication may very well be the interface on the other end is daunting to program and TechSmith has no control over it.

There are some solutions such as Gladinet or the new Sky drive and Google drive that is a local application the syncs with the cloud. But none of this is a built in Snagit profile and it's all a workaround.

@Manny - you are so right.
One can use all kinds of workarounds, like Pinch (http://4kn.co.uk/pinch/) but it would simply be much easier to have something in SnagIt.
However, I guess introducing this will have a low priority as it competing with their own screencast product and, in the end, may potentially result in users to move away from Screencast.

Feature has been requested many times, like:
"Would like Imageshack and Photobucket outputs in Snagit" (2 years back)
http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmi...
and
"When will there be a output plugin for SnagIt (TechSmith)?" (asking for dropbox plugin) 5 years ago...
https://getsatisfaction.com/dropbox/t...

Anyway ... maybe with v.12 ..?

If the devs haven't figured out a way to make Snagit automatically upload to Dropbox and copy a public link to the clipboard please direct them to the program Greenshot that has perfectly coded such a feature. It is open source, so maybe Snagit can get some ideas on how to make this work from the Greenshot team.
