SnagIt v.11 Custom Color Depth - Where did it go?

I just purchased v.11 after using v.8 for a long time. The most important feature for me is changing the size of Capture (especially saved to Clipboard) by using 4-bit or smaller custom color depth. This makes my emails much smaller. Where did this go? Why did it go? in version 11?

Hi Ms. Hughes,
I apologize for the delay in our response.

In Snagit Release 11, all editing is now done with a 32-bit color depth. Files can be saved to other color depths, but color depth can no longer be manipulated during the editing process. So, when you go to save as a png for example, you can click the Options button in the Save As dialog box and choose a different bit depth or you can create a profile that always saves your png file at a certain bit depth.

A couple advantage of going entirely 32-bit:
- Your image always looks its best because it is using the same amount of colors as it was when it was captured from the screen.
- The point at which bit depth is chosen is during file save not during editing, this allows you to edit with full 32 bit color and save multiple copies of the same image with many different bit depths if you needed.
- Once a image’s color depth is reduced it is very hard to introduce new colors, by always editing in 32 bit you can introduce new colors and accommodate them during the save process when we determine the best set of colors for the reduced color bit depth.

For your specific scenario, to reduce email message size with images, a workaround is to use the Screencast output and have a URL with Thumbnail on the clipboard. Your email will include a link to an image, there won’t be multiple copies of the image (one for each recipient) and the image will be in full 32 bit color.

Please let us know if you have any questions or additional feedback.
Thank you,
Tiffany

Hi Tiffany,
I had the same use case as Ms. Hughes, and I'm very disappointed to upgrade to v11 and lose this feature. Your workaround is not very useful. I paste into emails, word documents, and excel sheets, and I want to keep those file sizes small. The customer requirement you have ignored is:

The user shall be able to set the color depth for images saved into the clipboard, and Snagit shall persist this setting between sessions.

Everyone in my company who used Snagit 8 relies on this feature. I will advise them not to upgrade, and I will probably downgrade again.

I have the same complaint as ncfitton, using the color profile change feature in many of the same ways.

It was incredibly useful to be able to switch to different color profiles on the fly, as different applications have different requirements for color depth. Being able to change it in SnagIt meant having control over how the image would be viewed by others in the final environment.

I realize that I can find a profile that will work. But even then it would requires me to save the file, find it, and import it into the host application. It's a matter of only a few more steps and less than a quarter-of-a-minute of time, but when you're used to being able to do it so easily and painlessly in an older version (and when the task is repeated so much) it becomes frustrating.

So, I would like to second a request to add this feature back into SnagIt, either in 11 (preferred) or in a later version.

Thank you.

I have the same issue with no option of using color depth during the editing process. I download images of text and then highlight portions of that text. Without being able to adjust the color depth, the highlights show gray. In previous versions, I could upgrade the color depth to the highest number and the highlight shows the color I want it to.

I do not understand the reasoning for removing the color depth option in the editor.

I want colour depth back. I use it all the time to reduce colours, select a colour and then substitute that 1 colour to another.

Snagit v11 - I really miss the color depth option. Now I have to save to disk and attached a file an e-mail, and delete the disk file. I used to be able to adjust the in-memory color depth in the editor, 'copy image' and paste to my e-mail to keep my e-mail size small. Please consider putting this option back in - what were you trying to save, one entry in a pop-up menu list?

Jim H in WI and I still love Snagit !

Add the "change colour depth" back in. IT IS WHY I USE SNAGIT!!! I need to modify colours (reduce colours then I substitute a colour for another). Why hell would you take it out??? ARGH.

I have gone back to SnagIt v10 because of the color depth option during editing. I won't be upgrading to any further versions until its back. Its a wonderful program otherwise but I use this too much to go without.

I fully agree with ncfitton. This is an important use case:

"The user shall be able to set the color depth for images saved into the clipboard, and Snagit shall persist this setting between sessions."

Saving the file to disk and reloading it into another application (email) is a very bad workflow:

(1) It messes up my disk with files I wouldn't save otherwise.
(2) It wastes time storing and reloading images.
(3) It wastes even more time cleaning up the temporary copies.

Perhaps you could treat the clipboard in the same way as any other output media, i.e. introduce a save-to-clipboard with the same option to set color depth as for saving to a file. While this would move the functionality to another menu item, it would at least still be available!

Reducing colour depth was the main reason for me using Snagit. Give this feature back, please!

Please see this thread. It requires the color depth option to work. It's YOUR workaround.

Is there any status update on if this feature will be re-implemented?

Wow - I thought I was the only one who couldn't find this option. I used it on nearly every capture prior to pasting into emails. Looks like it is time to find a different tool. Clearly the Tiffany Wood and the rest of the SnagIt team had a different use case in mind than mine, but as others indicate many users in my org use SnagIt to insert just the right amount of an image into an email or doc, and they downsize the color depth to keep the size reasonable.

Every other feature in SnagIt I use 'once in a while' but reducing the color depth before pasting into documents I use every single time I take a capture.

My use case is creating technical manuals requiring dozens and sometimes hundreds of screenshots. Removing this means that I either create enormous documents that my customers will reject, or spend cumulative hours saving intermediate files and importing them.

Very sad - the new ribbon interface is lovely, but without this feature it's useless to me and I'll be going back to v8.

I'm very disappointed that this feature was removed. Color depth reduction was a key reason I chose SnagIt in the first place, and now I'm sorry I upgraded to version 11.

Just stumbled over this using Snagit12. Really, it's gone since 11? We more and more are confronted with developers who forgot that disk space is limited and so is bandwith. Techsmith: companies still do not have 1gbit LAN and abundant disk space, and as soon as you go on SharePoint then your documents need to remain lean.
