Snagproj image previews not working in Mac 2.0

Don't seem to be able to preview my Mac 1.0 version snagproj files in Mac 2.0 only the new files show a thumbnail? Hard to find my old images that way. Can I convert them all to Mac 2.0 somehow?

Hi Anthony,

For version 2.0, we rewrote the way we are doing the Finder image previews for .snagproj files. The one major downside to that was that any old, version 1.0 files would no longer have a preview displayed in Finder.

In order for your older 1.0 files to work with the 2.0 preview, they will need be reopened in Snagit 2.0, and re-saved. As a quick test, open a few of your older files in Snagit 2.0 and then close them. Head back over to Finder to see if the preview is now working.

If it's working, great, simply load the rest of the old files in Snagit and close them. If the preview still doesn't work, you may need to make a small modification to the file and then save the file.

Let me know if you have any other questions about this or if anything goes awry with these workarounds.

Thank you for a great question, this will most likely be something many others encounter as well.

Am I understanding this correctly - what you are suggesting is that each individual file be opened and closed or am I missing some way to load them somewhere all at once? I have hundreds of files - one by one will take forever! Please tell me there's a more efficient way to accomplish this.

I agree that this is totally unacceptable when I have literally 939 captures from the prior version. I can't tell you how frustrated I have been in the past hour trying to find some old screen captures.

Either Snagit needs to be able to visually browse more than a handful of earlier captures visually, or there needs to be a script or something that fixes the old files (after backing up the originals).

Maybe I missed it, but there should have been a big warning about this prior to updating. I certainly would have stayed where I was on 1.x and wait for a "fix" to this problem.

I told countless people about this product and rely on it daily.

Grumpy and very disappointed in TechSmith.

I tried Jason's solution of re-opening the file and then save/close it - guess what that has not worked on a single file! If I want it to show up in preview I've had to make a modification on everyone in order for it to be visible. I'm looking at over 2500 files. Please TechSmith - find a solution and soon. This is ridiculous.

I have a ton of captures as well, is there anyway to do this in bulk? Also, it would have been nice to know this beforehand, then i would have organized my files better. I was depending on the software to work the way I always counted on it to work.

I really don't have the time to waste to do this, and its going to cost me.

Please advise.

Hi Everyone,

First of all, thank you all for taking the time to provide your ardent and candid feedback, it is greatly appreciated. At this time there isn't a straightforward solution to correct this problem en masse.

As I mentioned, the best workaround we currently have is to open a file and make a small modification and re-save. However, as many have pointed out, this is a completely unacceptable workaround when dealing with a large number of captures.

We are really sorry for this problem and understand your frustration and apologize that we don't have a better solution.

This is really disappointing news - expected more from TechSmith - failed badly in meeting their usual high quality of work - especially given the nature and promotion of the value of using Snagit - capturing anything. Hard to understand how this potential problem was missed in development of the upgrade and really sad to think that it might have been addressed as an issue but ignored or considered not important.

Maybe in the future you could warn or consult beta testers to some of these types of changes and get feedback that would better help you address the problem or let folks know what to expect before installing updates. This would have made a huge difference in the timing of my upgrade to 2.0. Knowing that I would not be able to view images in finder would have provided me with the option to address the problem on my end before installing the upgrade.

Yes, it still would have been a pain and lot of extra work to go through a huge number of files. However having the opportunity to identify the most important captures and rename them organize them (better able to find them to modify in 2.0) and on the upside purge the unneeded ones - doing that prior to the upgrade in an organized fashion would have been a much better workflow than having this foisted on us. The majority of my Snagit captures are not one and done. I doubt even now you fully understand the havoc and disruption this has created for heavy duty Snagit users.

This was driving me a bit nuts...I have over 2000 captures.

so - I made a project out of it and learned some AppleScript to automate this a bit. This probably isn't the most efficient, but it works. It basically opens a bunch of .snagproj files you select, then saves them one by one and closes them. That's it. it takes about 1-2 seconds each snag. But at least you don't have to do this manually.

I can now see all my Snagit files once again in the previewer...!

You can download an app I created - SnagitUpRight 2.0. Download, unzip, start the app - it will ask you to select some snagproj files and will start you off in the default snagit auto-capture directory with all your snagproj files (/users/Documents/Snagit/Autosaved Captures). You can choose a few files or select all of them (press ctrl-A when selecting files to select them all in one shot) to be updated to version 2.0 new format for previews.

upload files online

One warning - the files will be re-saved, so their modified date will be changed, but the files are auto-numbered by date so you can always kinda tell when you first took the snag.

I have no idea what I'm doing with AppleScript, so use at your own risk - but it worked on several thousand files on my machine. Let me know if you got some use out of this on Twitter @aroths

I look forward to future updates for Snagit on Mac - I love the program!

Your AppleScript worked as advertised. Thanks for that. Many old captures (2,000+) are now happily previewed. I started with the oldest first to keep them sort of in chronological order.

I also thought about this a bit - you can also sort by created date in Finder, since the files are only modified with this process, not created new.

One New Update: I've made it a bit faster by only closing the window set every 10 images opened, instead of every time a new image is opened.

Thanks Aaron! This worked great! I thought about doing exactly what you did, but just have no time.

Now if they'd only fix/bring back a sane version of the pen tool (make it an object again so it can be moved/deleted), I'll be reasonably happy with the 2.x version of Snagit. Boy what a mistake upgrading so quickly...

Yeah - i ended up staying up all night (initiated by a project where I needed to find some old snags) and sleeping through the day of skiing I had planned. It's all good, the snow wasn't great and I learned that you can do some cool stuff with AppleScript.

Ya, that's kinda crazy with the pen being a flattened layer that's uneditable - didn't notice it till you pointed it out.

Aaron - there are no words strong enough to convey my gratitude for what you have done. Pure genius - the work you've save me - wow. TechSmith - pay the man give him a free copy of Snagit - do something! Get his code and put it in the application so others can upgrade and not have the nasty surprise we all did. Thanks again.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the feedback, as we've mentioned, we sincerely apologize for this annoying issue with Snagit. We are so impressed with a community that is willing to help one another out, this was exemplified by Aaron's help with this topic.

Inspired by Aaron's efforts, the Snagit team wanted to provide a similar utility for our Right-Now support system which contains a few additional enhancements, so we wanted to share that back to this thread as well. It can be downloaded here: http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/ans.... An example of one of the enhancements is detecting your Snagit auto-save location when prompting to choose your Snagit files.

Again, thank you for all of the great participation,

Jason

Can someone point me to the current location of this utility? The link in the previous message doesn't work anymore.
