have you tried using the animations tool [left side panel]?

you can also zoom using the right panel's scale control

To add a bit of explanation, the animations allow you to add zooming in or out, and repositioning elements in your video. The scale control allows you to scale an object up or down, but it's for the entire duration that the object appears. There is no animation added as there is with zoom and pan.

Zoom through the properties panel can work.

However, what your doing is zooming into the center of the screen.
While the following image may be considered an exaggerated example.
This is probably not what you're looking for.

Some panning is usually required to produced a polished video. Viewers shouldn't have to struggle to follow the content/message.
If you apply zoom, then what your attempting to show them is actually off center. The zooming is not intuitive. Without arrows or flashing lights. They have to be lazier focused on clues from the narration to follow along.

Camtasia's pan and zoom effect is easier apply than pan and zooms in programs like Premier Pro. I consider it to be the best feature the editor has to offer.

Just saying
