Stamp Searching Information

So after the conversation the other day about stamps and keywords and suchlike, I have been scratching my head a bit and having a play.

What I learned the other day was that the stamp search for Windows does not allow for adding your own keywords. Additionally, the search ignores file names and is apparently reliant upon the file type being PDF and somehow the keywords are stored inside the PDF.

Many of my own stamps exist in the form of simple PNG images. As such, the search is worthless in finding these easily.

Moments ago I pondered if it would be possible to use SnagIt to save an image as a PDF, then add it to my stamps folder. Additionally, would I be able to add my own keywords? And it does appear that's the case!

So here's what I did. Created a new blank image. Added one of my PNG stamps to the image. Flattened and trimmed so only the main image was surrounded.

I then clicked File > Save and changed the file type to PDF. And when I did that, I noticed there was a nifty button labeled "Options" in that dialog. When I clicked the Options button, another dialog appeared that allowed me to type "Tags:". So I put a couple of odd words in there. Beep and Boop.

Finished the save, then ensured I copied the PDF file to one of my stamps folders. Then I performed a search of one of the Tags.

Lo and behold, my saved PNG saved as a PDF was listed!

Looks like there are some tweaks I might be able to make that would make the thumbnail a bit larger, but this gives me hope!

Note that Windows did prevent me from saving directly to the SnagIt Stamps folder. I think it was a file or folder permissions issue. But it seems that stamps can be in different locations. So I found a location where I had saved previously.

Hopefully it will help someone else out there as well.

Cheers... Rick :)

I admire your spirit and your perseverance in finding a solution Rick, although the heart of your solution i.e. tagging the PDFs correctly does rather underline my point.

If a user, albeit an expert user, can do this then so could SnagIt's stamp content team, and instead of n users having to do this to correct their installation, SnagIt could contain correctly tagged files in the core app.

What you have also eloquently illustrated is that this problem doesn't actually need a new release to fix.  If TechSmith tag the files correctly and attach a zip file in this forum or on their Support site, those of us who need this could download the file and unzip it into the stamps folder.  And it could be rolled into the main product at some later stage, even SnagIt 2020

Sorry to ask such an obvious question, but did you have SnagIt running when you tried to overwrite the stamps folder?   It's possible it's the program that placed the lock on the folder / files?

Hi Paul, I thought we mentioned on the other thread that updates to tagging are in the works (adding more variety of terms for global locales). Your feedback was heard and acted on. Thank you.

Hi Paul

I added the stamp file without closing the SnagIt editor and the stamp showed right up! Didn't require a restart or anything.

Cheers... Rick :)

Sorry, should have made myself clearer.  i was referring to your comment "... Windows did prevent me from saving directly to the SnagIt Stamps folder. I think it was a file or folder permissions issue."

Are your stamps mostly your own that you have saved or are you referring to what TechSmith supplies?
