This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: I think Get Satisfaction has resolved the spam issue for the most part so I'm archiving this thread.

If you look at the user Profile of these Spammers, they create an account and then immediately start posting Spam and a lot of it.
I propose that a New user can only post a limited number of questions or answers per day. This would be in place for a probationary period of time.
Leave limitations in place for inactive accounts. That way the Spammers can't just wait out a probationary period and then start Spamming the second the limits are lifted.
Introduce some sort of Spam alert button or feature and limit it usage to trusted Long time membership  users or some other standard.
This in hopes of alleviating abuse of this feature by disgruntled spammers or just all around spiteful people that don't know how to act.
Something needs to be done and the sooner the better.
But it must be implemented in a way to Out Fox the abusers.
        Regards, Joe

I participate in other forums where each new post is vetted by a moderator before being posted publicly; never see any spam there; the new-post volume on this forum is much lower than what I see on the forum that vets user inputs.

Joe's idea re "known trusted contributor" has merit.

Thanks for sparking the discussion, Joe. I agree that the pattern of abuse is pretty consistent and easy to detect and would be a good place to start.

TechSmith does not have any direct control over spam filtering on this site, as we're using a platform developed by a third party called Get Satisfaction. What we can do is ban spammers and mass delete their posts. We are also communicating with the Get Satisfaction support team as they work to block IP addresses, and to help them understand the negative impact on our community.

Discussion here is great and we'll try to direct the attention of Get Satisfaction to it. Another way you could help is to post or +1 your ideas on this thread in Get Satisfaction's own community. Their CTO is active on the thread and they are definitely listening and acting to resolve the situation.

Thanks for hanging with us and helping brainstorm ideas! I'm glad this recent spate of spam is an aberration here in the community and look forward to having it behind us soon.

Thanks Daniel - What should we do or how should we report other spam? Moments ago I saw a thread where a user named "Angel" has posted a comment that would appear to be somewhat innocuous, but it's really just pure spam when you look at it.

How do we report these?

Thread is here:
https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/transparency_background_on_a_picture

I note that "Angel" has posted twice. Not sure if that post count relfects just this forum or if it's indicative of all posts made to GetSatisfaction.

Cheers... Rick :)

Hey Rick,

You can report them just like you did there. I removed Angel's posts and suspended that account.

Thanks,

Andrea

Rick, after I commented, I realized that "Hey, I know this guy!"

Good to see you here. Hope to see you at the STC Summit in May. :)

Let me point out that this type of spam would be much easier to handle if TechSmith hosted its own forums as it did previously.

I second Manny's comments here; I personally miss the old forum; for me, it was much more user friendly, easier to search, and a lot easier to interact as a responder

I will 3rd what Manny and kayakman said. It was much nicer when they hosted their own forum message board.

I must be remembering a different forum.  ;) I recall being plagued by spam...week after week of the kind of attacks we've seen only rarely and for short periods on this platform. But I'm not trying to pick a fight and TechSmith is deeply grateful that all three of you transitioned to the new platform and continue to help out. We're committed to building a healthy community where users, staff, and prospects all derive a ton of value from the interaction. Couldn't do it without you.

Well, I'm sorry I opened that can of worms.  It's a lost fight.  Let me just say that other current forums in which I participate can handle this type of thing better then here.  I'm not trying to pick a fight either.  I guess I woke up today with that little devil going overtime..

I hope that this spam stops soon.  It is taking up too much time to delete!  I like the forum, but may need to reconsider it's value!

I just saw this post because THIS POST was in my SPAM folder!  Anyway, it seems I received the mother-lode of spam this morning.  I'm starting to set up Rules in my outlook, but I would think Get Satisfaction could do something more than it is.  I'm not getting a lot of satisfaction right now.

@Pinky: Please see Daniel's post above.  We are working directly with GetSatisfaction, the developers behind this community site, to get this addressed.  We encourage you to let them hear your voice alongside ours by visiting the thread Daniel linked.

Hi all - I posted a company update about the issue. Get Satisfaction is taking the issue very seriously and will be working on additional short-term and long-term prevention measures. It's a bit of a cat-and-mouse game (these are human spammers, not bots) so we can't share a lot of details publicly. But I'm hopeful that we'll see some improvement soon.
