Suggestion for addition to SnagIT

I use SnagIT to create all of my training and reference materials and just don't know what I'd do without it. One think I'd love to see is a bracket { and } symbol option to be able to add to a capture. I'd like to be able to enlarge/entend it as needed to select or highlight specific area(s) of a capture. Thanks for a great product!!

Hi Patricia - You're in luck...we have some bracket stamps you can download for free and use in Snagit!

Let us know if those serve your needs or how we could improve them.

Hi Patricia - Thank you for your idea. We just released Snagit 11 for windows today and we included a new set of business stamps that have your brackets. Here is a quick list of what's new: http://www.techsmith.com/snagit-whats...

Keep those ideas coming in ;)

Hi - how do you edit the width and color of the brackets? Am I missing something?

Hi Laura - Unfortunately, you cannot change the color of the stamps since they are simply vector images. You can click on them to resize them however you want.

Obviously Laura wants the same thing as me and you're missing it. We need a stamp that we can edit.  Those in 12 are too cartoonish.

Hi John,
I also use brackets in some of the technical information I create and cannot use the bracket stamps since I cannot change the look, size, or color.

However, I have a method for creating my brackets that might work for you.

I simple add a text-only callout and add the bracket from my keyboard. Then, adjust the size, color, and font style to get the look and size I need.

I know this isn't perfect, but it gives me lots of options for customizing the look and feel of the bracket. And, I typically don't need to rotate brackets so this ends up being all I need.

Thanks for using Snagit!

Thanks, Kelly.  I'll give that a try and hopefully incorporating editable brackets, etc. will be considered in a future release.

Kelly Mullins, am I following your directions wrong?

I can make the bracket only as large as 72 pt (since it is an ASCII character-- text). I need it to be longer than that and not so wide. Do you have a further suggestion for me? I tried "grow font" to make it bigger than 72 pt, but it makes the bracket thicker as well as longer, something I definitely don't want.

I've tried bringing brackets in from PowerPoint and Visio but they bring in unwanted white space iwth them.  :(

Another vote for brackets that are crisp, not cartoonish (that is, they appear as does the ASCII brackets), sizeable, and able to be colored.

If you double click inside of the Font size window you can type in a point value, say 400 as an example. That will give you a very large font to work with.  The drop down window for fonts is not a limitation on size.

Yes, I did try that :)  .  It makes the bracket thicker as well as longer, which is not what I wanted. I wanted it longer, but no thicker.

OK, another vote for editable bracket stamp, not another work-around.  The bracket in the Business stamps is very cartoonish (looks more like a mustache) and not meant for a truly professional business document.  You've got a wonderful product, I love it.  Just tell us your adding an editable bracket and not just throwing out work-arounds.

I agree, John: I am not a TechSmith employee, just another user trying to get her work done. What I am doing right now is to design the bracket in Microsoft Visio and copy it, together with the callout text that goes with the bracket, into the SnagIt Editor. I have to use trial and error to get the size right, but at least it is right on the mark and the bracket is a professional-looking one that I can make the color I need.

TechSmith, I submit that the behavior and capabilities of the Visio bracket are exactly what I want in SnagIt!

I hear you @ John. Load and clear.
Sometimes workarounds is all you got. You can grow old waiting for the features you want.

I was really trying to respond to my last post. I misread @gailjurczyk's post.
If you want to rescale a brackets height without making it thicker. You can do it with some limitations.

If you create a new  Image with a transparent background, then add in a bracket. The Image below is a 500 x 500 pixel image with a transparent background, and the bracket is 300 points.

Save that as a .png. You can paste it over another image and rescale it however you want. If you stretch a png to far, you can get some pixilation. But you can rescale them a lot more if the .png image is larger than the final scaled size. Scaling an image down is pretty much limitless without distortions or undesirable  artifacts.

Regards, Joe

There is my work-around, pictured above. The brackets and their callouts were copied in from Microsoft Visio. The numbered callouts, arrow, and arrow callouts are from SnagIt. Quick and dirty, haven't aligned everything yet.

Actually, I made my own colored arrow from a PowerPoint SmartShape, saved as a new SnagIt stamp (need my arrows to be a specific color).

Very nice.  A work-around that I can live with.  Thanks again, Gail.

You're welcome!

You can vary the weight of the bracket in Visio as well. I'm glad that TechSmith has provided this forum for those of us who are staunch fans of their great product!!! I use it daily in my work as a technical writer and for my personal correspondence as well.
