For the past 11 years we have provided Jing for free. Our customers have found significant value from Jing, based on the high number of downloads and positive ratings. With Adobe’s upcoming retirement of Flash (planned December 2020), Jing’s current video format (.swf) will no longer be supported by web browsers. As a result, we have received many questions about the future of Jing.

We have decided to end development on Jing, and to build a replacement tool. We remain committed to offering a free solution because we are passionate about making it easy for anyone to capture and share knowledge visually. But, we feel that the best long-term approach to achieving our mission with a free offering is to build a new product from the ground up. The new recorder will be built into and accessible within the Screencast and Relay interfaces, with videos stored in Screencast (free or pro) or Relay.  We are unable to commit to specific timing for inclusion of this tool within Screencast but it will be in 2019, and we will be able to provide a date update in the spring. This new screen recorder is planned to have many advantages over Jing video including mp4 videos, webcam support, and longer videos, and it will remain advertising-free.

We will continue to offer Jing to new and existing users as long as it is valued as-is. Note that a significant amount of Jing’s usage is for image capture and markup which, unlike video recording, is unaffected by Flash retirement.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Hi all!

As a follow up to the above 2018 announcement regarding the future of Jing, we wanted to provide you with an update on our plans and progress.

As promised, we are moving forward this year with our commitment to continue to provide a free desktop-based screen capture and recording tool. The new replacement tool will likely be rolled out in phases.

The first phase will focus on providing new video functionality that will produce mp4 files. This will address Adobe’s upcoming retirement of Flash in December 2020, which will no longer support .swf files. Video functionality will be prioritized in order to provide you with an improved screen recording experience well in advance of the Flash retirement.

Future phases of this new offering will include functionality around image capture and annotation.

Our intent is still to provide the modernized screen recording functionality by the end of this year. Information will also be communicated to Jing users via the email address they used when setting up their TechSmith account throughout the remainder of the year. Additional information and progress will also be posted on the Jing user forum throughout the year.
