TechSmith Products and the Windows 10 Launch

Windows 10 is here!  We’ve completed our first round of testing with the release version, and would like to outline what we’ve found.  We’re working on these issues now, and plan to have a release that addresses them in the coming weeks. Until then, here are some things that we wanted to make you aware of:

Snagit:
  • Cross hairs snap to windows that do not exist / are not visible.
  • Unable to share to universal app versions of outputs, such as OneNote.
  • Unable to execute a scrolling capture within universal apps, including the Edge browser.

Camtasia:
  •  When running on certain versions of Windows 10, the following error can be received: “This application has failed to start because WMVCore.DLL was not found”.  This error can be resolved by following the instructions in our Knowledge Base article at https://support.techsmith.com/hc/en-us/articles/203730038.

Jing:

  • Cross hairs snap to windows that do not exist / are not visible.

Morae:
  • At times the Morae recorder may hang during launch on Windows 10.  While it may not occur in every case, we do not recommend Morae customers upgrade to Windows 10 at this time.
  • Observer issues if browsing with the name field empty.
  • The mouse tail is not in sync with the recording and at times is not present at all.
  • Unable to capture web events from the Edge browser.

Are you seeing different issues that we should know about?

Our testing primarily focused on the Pro edition; are you on Home, Education, or Enterprise?

Please tell us what you are seeing below, or start a new conversation.  Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Will the solution solve that problem in SnagIt 11 also, or will it only work with the update?  I love the program and cannot find anything that works as nicely.  I hope the solution is quick in coming.

I am also running Windows 10 Edge. I purchased the new update for SnagIt.  The scrolling had been working just fine.  I tried it this morning and it no longer works.

David thanks for sharing that great information with everyone. I have not yet updated to Windows 10 and have decided to maybe wait a little bit to do that update.

Jackie thanks for sharing your information and finds with this too. I am sorry I cannot help with that and verify if that option is working or not. Maybe David can jump in or someone who has updated to Windows 10 and verify if they are having that same issue or not.

Thanks for posting everyone and have a great day/night.

Hello, folks!

I wanted to thank you for your continued support of TechSmith Products on Windows 10; we are definitely looking forward to your feedback.

I would also like to point out that the versions that we have tested on Windows 10 are as follows:

Snagit 12.4.0
Camtasia Studio 8.5.2
Jing (current)
Morae 3.3.3

If you are experiencing oddities please check to ensure that you are on these versions first and if you are not, we ask that you upgrade to the latest version (you can download the latest versions of Snagit and Camtasia Studio at https://www.techsmith.com/download/alternate.asp ). Please feel free to leave us feedback regarding any issues that you may come across.

Thanks again!

Can you provide more information like what OS you are using and if you are on the latest version of SnagIt ? Also, when you say you are using the copy all function can you give more information of what steps you are taking and what you are trying to copy and what you want to do with it after the copy ? Thanks for posting and have a great day/night.

I would check for updated drivers. Many manufacturers are behind in releasing drivers for Windows 10. I had weird little things not related to any tech smith software, but getting actual drivers for win 10 from manufacturer has solved a lot.

Not sure why, but whenever I go to capture with snagit 12.4 the application just crashes with no notice before the cross hairs normally would appear.  I only know it is crashing because I can no longer find it under task manager.

Are you taking a specific type of capture (image, video), or does it just crash on any type of capture that you take? Are you using the Red capture button or are you pressing a capture hotkey? Have you run all updates for the computer then restarted it and tried to take another capture?

I am trying to take images (haven't tried video) and it is occurring both with the red button and with using the hotkey.

I have installed all available updates for Windows 10 pro.

After upgrading to Windows 10 from 8.1, my video projects will not render. Rendering initiates but seldom reaches 100%. I'd say 1 out of every 10 projects I try to render actually completes. I had much better success rendering before upgrading to Windows 10. I've had to do all of my rendering on my Windows 8.1 tablet. I hope a new version is coming out soon so I can render again.

Hello, Aaronrutten;

After upgrading to Windows 10 did you try reinstalling Camtasia Studio? This may be necessary as there could be dependencies that need to be installed (or reinstalled) and by uninstalling/reinstalling Camtasia you may be notified of those dependencies. You will also want to make sure that your video card drivers and your audio card drivers are up to date and that you have run the Windows Updates and restarted the computer to ensure all additional updates are installed. If that does not work, can I have you open a support ticket at http://bit.ly/1DYL3yF and put ATTN Robert in the Subject?

Initially, I did all of those things you listed and then some. None of it helped. I haven't tried updating the audio driver, but my guess is that's not the problem because I just tried upgrading my tablet to Windows 10 and now it won't render video either. The tablet uses a completely different video card and audio drivers than my desktop.

I immediately reverted the tablet back to Windows 8.1 and now Camtasia renders fine again. Definitely a Windows 10 issue more than a hardware or driver issue. I will open a support ticket. Thanks for your assistance.

We have a large library of videos created with Camtasia 6.  Launching the video with the .html file in Windows 10 loads the page in the Edge browser with a message that JavaScript isn't enabled or Flash isn't installed.  Edge supports JavaScript and has Flash included so I suspect there may be a problem with the code that is doing the detection.  As you would expect these play just fine in IE under Windows 10.

Is there some small tweak that we could make to these html files to make them work correctly with the Edge browser?

We could launch the .mp4 file directly rather than the .html, but we would lose the closed captioning support and we have a significant number of hearing impaired clients.

Hello, Paul;

On a fresh install of Windows 10 (with all updates) I am able to run the above link in Edge with no issue. Are you on a corporate network that may be restricting Flash playback due to the security issues that were brought to light (and subsequently addressed) a few weeks back? Are you able to, as a test, view the content in a different browser?

Hmmm.  You're right.  I did confirm the video played.  I was pointing you to one of the videos posted online, but our desktop clients play the video locally.  So in the browser you would see something like.

file:///C:/PDSChurch/Videos/PDSChurch...

Some of our clients don't have Internet access so the videos are installed locally as part of the product.

Try playing one of your Camtasia 6 videos from your local hard drive in 10 and see if that works or if you get this message (like we do) in Edge.

The Camtasia Studio video content presented here requires JavaScript to be enabled and the latest version of the Adobe Flash Player. If you are you using a browser with JavaScript disabled please enable it now. Otherwise, please update your version of the free Adobe Flash Player bydownloading here.

Have just downloaded the trial version 12.4 for use with new windows 10 install. System captures video OK and will show the video still in the bottom bar, but I am getting a "Server Busy" error so cannot proceed past the point. Have to use Task Manager to break out
Anyone else have this issue ?.

SnagIt 12.4.0.2992 doesn't work well. even the updater has issues. Sometimes a if you use the copy all function in editor, it will crash. I also suspect Video card driver interference.

Actually had an expired trial on my computer that I was procrastinating at purchasing.  Wanted to make sure it was going to work after the Win10pro upgrade before purchasing.  When I hit PrtScn or the red button I receive "Snagit has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop etc..."

TechSmith event viewer states only warnings, no errors.  Nothing in system or Application logs.

Service has started with no default endpoint File:  UploadService.cpp
 Line:  270
 Function:  Uploader::Initialize

 Code:  -2
Text: Failed to find endpoint in UploaderService.config file.
The file was located in:
C:\ProgramData\TechSmith\Uploader\UploaderService.config

Update to this issue.  It seemed to be a display driver issue.  Intel released a new driver and now my Snagit has started working properly again.

The issue I am having with Jing now is that when I make screen recordings my audio is corrupted. It's staticky my voice sounds low like it is being played back really slow, however, it is going at the normal speed. I have reinstalled all my drivers and checked my settings and in other applications the audio sounds just fine. Just not in Jing.

You really to start testing on high-resolution Windows devices like the Microsoft Surface Pro, Lenovo Yoga Pro and desktop machines with 4K monitors. I haven't tested Camtasia on this yet, but Snagit 12 (which I updated to expecting it to have scaling) is almost unusable because there is no scaling in the user interface and interface texts are frequently garbled. Touch-friendliness is also somewhere around zero.

I would class introducing UI scaling and touch-friendliness as urgent, because a very large number of new Windows machines now come with high-resolution touchscreens.

Hi.  I'm running Camtasia studio  8.5. on a windows 7 Home operating system (4 year old desktop). I'm hesitating about upgrading to windows 10 because of what I've been reading in these forums. Should I wait a bit longer before i make the leap?

This is something I would say you have to decide on your own. Myself I have been contemplating on upgrading to Windows 10 but might wait a little longer or just put it on another desktop I have and see if it works there before upgrading my main computer I use. Just my points and views on this subject.

Thanks for posting and let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out for you. Have a great day/night.

Jing version 2.8.13007
no issues on win 7. After upgrade to win10 home, about 50% of the time it'll crash win10, while taking a screen capture.

Using the latest version of the Morae Manager in free trial mode, the imported recorded sessions don't display video. It's typically a black box displayed, sometimes a white box. Audio is fine. When I select "Create a video clip" the preview shows the screen capture and webcam videos just fine. Booted up an old win7 machine and opened the same project, videos are fine. Let me know if there's anything I can do to fix it. Thanks!

Obrigado
