TechSmith products and Yosemite (Mac OS X 10.10) beta

Greetings, fellow Mac fans!

We had a lot of staff tuned in to watch the WWDC announcements this week and saw many things to get excited about. We got our hands on Yosemite the same day it was announced and have been working with it, to see how our products perform on the very early beta.

Snagit
We discovered what appears to be a bug in the current beta build of Yosemite that prevents Snagit for Mac from capturing to PNG. So if you depend on Snagit, we would not recommend updating to Yosemite beta at this time.

Camtasia
Camtasia 2.8.0 does not work on the current Yosemite beta but we plan to release an update before the end of June that should address this.

Jing
Testing on Jing is still in progress. We will update this thread as we have news.

The question people often want to know is “When will ____ product work on Yosemite?” Our primary goal is to ensure that our products will work on the final, released version of Yosemite. Because new bugs and issues can be introduced and then resolved during the OS development, we don’t promise that TechSmith products will work on every beta build of the OS. That would be like hitting two fast-moving targets. That said, we will continue to test against the beta and make updates to TechSmith products when possible.

Click the “Follow” button above to be kept informed as we have news or updates.

UPDATE October 29, 2014:

We've released updates for Snagit 3.x and Camtasia 2.x for Yosemite support.

We are aware of an issue in Snagit 3 when attempting scrolling capture within Safari that will be addressed in a future release.

Snagit 2.x does not work on Yosemite and there is no current plan to add support.

Jing is not officially supported in Yosemite, but in our experience it will work.  You may run into some issues if you are using external monitors. Other customers have reported seeing a "Blocked Plug-in" message for videos in the Jing preview window, but sharing your video will still work okay.

I'm going to be closing this thread for comments, but that does not mean we do not want your feedback. Feel free to start a new thread for any questions or issue you encounter, or utilize our free Technical Support at http://support.techsmith.com

I'm on Yosemite DP6 with SnagIt 12.  TechSmith System Audio Capture Component installs, but fails to ever record system audio.

Snagit Still a problem on DP6. The capture mechanism works fine, but always hangs on sending to the Preview Editor.

BTW: Thanks for the ongoing updates here. It really helps to hear the work as it occurs. And add me to the list of "willing to test anything out" if needed.

Hey everyone, Snagit Mac version 3.2 released today which should fix a lot of Yosemite issues.

Here is a list of the known issues that have NOT been fixed:
  • The app says it is from an unidentified developer (DP6+ only)
Workaround: Right click the app and click Open.  A dialog will popup and you can hit accept to no longer get this warning.

  • Reflection effect does not work
  • The menu bar icon is hard to see in Dark Mode
  • Scrolling Capture fails when using Safari
Workaround: Use Firefox w/ Snagit Extension or Chrome. (Non-App Store only)

Alternatively, select Web Page capture in the Other Captures Menu.  http://www.screencast.com/t/wD54Eco5D

  • Some text throughout the app has bad contrast (Black on Black)
  • Cannot edit hotkeys in the Snagit Capture Window
Workaround: Open Snagit Preferences > Keyboard and edit them there
If you come across any other issues, please report those here.

Thanks!

Installed 3.2 on Yosemite public beta 2. Snagit hangs and requires a "force quit" whenever I attempt to save a captured file.

@Pete : We cannot reproduce that problem internally.  Would you mind contacting tech support so we can get some logs from you? https://support.techsmith.com/home

Thanks!

Thanks for the update and release, will 3.2 be available in app store? (it does not seem to be there!).

About the Scrolling Capture which I used to have, you write above it is only available in non-app store version, why? and can I expect to have it again (have bought through app store).

3.2 is still under review for the App Store.  Assuming there are no issues, it should be out soon.

The old scrolling works by manipulation other apps, which is not allowed for security reasons in the App Store.  Because of this, that exact version of scrolling will not be returning to it, but we are working towards improving scrolling in the App Store, parts of which you will see when 3.2 releases there.  More info on the scrolling issue: https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/snag_it_full_scrolling_for_mac

It's out and the preview works again - thanks :-)

To bad about the scrolling, one of the best features and why I essentially bought it, many programs can make simple screenshots, even built in in Mac!

Hi,
I still have SnagIt 2.3.
I downloaded a testversion and entered the licence key. Now there is no update on the AppStore and also no new update available in SnagIt itself.
Please help.

Hi Chris,

Snagit 2.3 is the latest version of Snagit 2.x. You should be able to visit TechSmith.com and download the trial version of 3.2, but your license key won't work. Or, you could visit the Apple App Store and purchase Snagit 3.2 there.

If you already downloaded the latest trial from techsmith.com and installed it, it would be the most current version, so there would be no updates to perform.

If you launch Snagit and go to Snagit > About Snagit you should be able to see which version you're running.

Could you please release a fix for Snagit v2.3 on Yosmite? It hangs and the editor is not working at all. Thank you!

We released Camtasia for Mac 2.8.3 today.   This fixes crashes we were seeing on 10.10.   In particular you should be able to do a region capture without crashing.

What about Snagit v2.3? Why don't you provide customer support for users on previous versions? I just need a fix for Snagit v2.3 on Yosmite!

Thanks in advance!

Is there a pattern to the crashing?    Is it caused by particular actions, or is just kind of random?

It seems related to working with an unsaved file and applying masks and using Option+drag to extend clips. However, it also seemed a little random because the crashing became more frequent, even happening on save. It also happens every time I try to open the file it crashed while saving. However, I created a clean project and saved immediately after adding the clip and it's been pretty stable since then.

Here's a dropbox link to the project that still crashes it on every load:

I have good news and bad news, depending on how you look at it.  That project crashes on 10.9 as well, so it is not a 10.10 issue.  The crash is related to stitching, but I have not had time to really explore it yet.  I reverted your project to an earlier saved version for what its worth:  https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/30417976/iOS%20App%20Installation%20Restrictions.cmproj.zip  I am guessing some combination of stitching and clip speed resulted in a corrupt project.

Jason,

I am pretty sure the issue you are seeing is not related to 10.10.  The best way to get help, and the best way you can help us, is to open up a ticket with our tech support at https://support.techsmith.com/anonymous_requests/new .  That is the easiest way for us to get all the information we need to sort out what is wrong.

I'll open a ticket. But we never had this issue on Mavericks. And this was a completely new project again.

Just as a follow up with bsteginks' comment; I am on the newest build of the latest GM release and Snagit 3.2.1 is working fine for me.  Props for the work that has been done to get it this far.

I need this info too. currently on snagit 2.3.0. Also, anybody have any opinions about snagit 3. is upgrading from 2 compelling? I also use camtasia so I don't need more robust video tools in snagit.
