So we expect a lot of votes. :) )

TechSmith has been investigating alternative approaches to bring back Text Capture to Snagit after it was broken over time with OS updates.

The most common use cases that we've heard that this is valuable for include:

  • I want to capture text in an error message, pop-up window, app, or drop-down menu where text is not selectable or “copy” is disabled.
  • I want to capture the text in a file directory (filename, file size, date modified) to compare against previous versions.

I don't really understand what this feature would be? What are some other examples or use cases?

In most cases if you see a Windows error dialog you are able to press Ctrl+C while the dialog is visible. This normally produces something like this:

[Window Title]
rick.exe

[Content]
Windows cannot find 'rick.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

[OK]

But in some cases, this isn't possible. Pressing Ctrl+C does not capture the error. The only way to grab it is by capturing an image. But some folks want the text, not an image.

I suppose another possibility would be to scrape text off an image capture.

Cheers... Rick :)

Did it keep working when you upgraded your version of windows? Because they say the feature was removed because of the OS.... or rather they likely didn't know how to turn on the OCR tiff. Function .... either way, looks like they are using agile scrum as their Dev method, as an ex product owner this will end up being tedious.

This is my #1 desired "new" feature in SnagIt. When it used to be in the product, I used to use it regularly to maintain a record of changes to my PC's configuration when the use of the "Copy" command was unavailable. Try as I might, over the years, I've yet to find a suitable replacement for SnagIt text capture.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Alternate to SnagIt 12 missing text capture.

The text capture feature has been removed from SnagIt 12. I'm looking for a
suggestion for an alternative. I periodically find the text capture feature
useful. SnagIt was the only way I knew how to capture text. For example I
would use it to capture and then manipulate file lists from Windows Explorer or a list of database queries.
Suggestions for an
alternative would be appreciated.   Thanks

missing text capture-Snagit 13 jmabe Dec 21, 10:24 AM EST I got snagit 11 for several reasons but one feature i found very useful on about a weekly basis was the ability to capture text for building a spreadsheet or just about anything... I upgraded to snagit 13 and the feature is not there - is the capture text going to come back to snag some day soon (i hope, fingers crossed)

Hi Dave,

With reference to the previous post "Where is the Text Capture feature in Snagit 12?", I would like to know if there has been any further developments on your official response. I quote, "We will continue to consider alternative approaches that could allow us to bring text capture back in some form, but to be clear, at this time we have not found a suitable alternative."

Hope to hear from you soon.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Snagit version 13 text capture - cannot see how to do it.

I recently updated Snagit from version 9 - I like to support companies who produce quality software.
I cannot see how to do a text capture and can't spot anything in the Help file.
It is rather important to my work.

Help ! please.

Version 13, still not better than v11 as there is no Text Capture yet... Didn’t upgrade to v12 because of it and unlikely to upgrade to v13 because of it. Very disappointing.

I'd like to be able to take a capture of a screen containing text, and then extract the text from the capture to the clipboard. OneNote has this feature built-in.

I use snagit for language learning. I take a lot of screen shots from online and offline dictionaries. It would be very helpful to be able to extract the text from these captures. Even more helpful would be the ability to search through the library for captures containing certain text. I have hundreds of captures. I often know the text I'm looking for, but not the date the capture was made.

This is the top SnagIt improvement that I vote for. Incredibly useful and you used to be the only program I knew of that had it. Please make it available in v 11.

I used to use it all the time and absolutely would like to see it put back in.  I've had to down grade to an older version so I can use it.  I used it for capturing info from shared drives, web pages, documents, all sorts of things.  I'll upgrade once it's added back in.
