This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Where is the Text Capture feature in Snagit 12?

I'm amazed that such a fundamental feature was ripped out of SnagIt v12!  Are you kidding me? You need to rethink this!

It's remarkable that we pay for each upgrade and you guys keep pulling stuff that we're using!

There are a number of posts from other people complaining about this.

TechSmith has no plans of bringing it back.

You could get a refund  within 30 days of purchasing the upgrade and just download an older version of SnagIt 11.

You can download and install an older version from this link. http://www.techsmith.com/download.html

Is this really true?  I use this feature at least once per week.  I will not upgrade if this is true.  I guess I'll have to start looking for a different utility.  I have been a die-hard user and proponent of Snagit since version 4, I think... back when it used to be a free utility... back when I was young!

Sad. Maybe they will put it back in for us.

How can I use Snag 11 with the text capture functionality without the Snagit 12 editor restarting?
I exited for Snagit 12 and captured text using Snagit 11. However, I am unable to export my capture to Snagit 11 editor.

Removing the text capture functionality is a step backwards, and I would still like to use this feature in my existing licensed version 11.

Not nice...

This is strictly a guess. I saw no responses to your question so I'm throwing this out there.

Is your SnagIt 12 editor set to always run in the Background?
You can also set your capture profile to open in the SnagIt editor.

Removing the text capture make Snag it completely useless for me. What other programs will capture images, video and text?

Yes, it is outrageous that text capture was removed and the company will surely lose customers. I am now using ABBYY Screenshot Reader for capturing text. It costs $29.95, but works well http://www.abbyy.com/screenshot_reader/

Thanks for this endorsement.  I have seen it mentioned here before and many of us are researching alternatives.  I have not migrated to Snagit12 - nor will I, but eventually 11 will need to be replaced with something.  My true hope is that Snagit13 will have text capture back by then, but I need a contingency plan.

Does ABBYY use OCR for text capture?  That would be a compelling reason to migrate regardless of Snagit's plan.  (OCR is Optical Character Recognition - it is software that "looks" at shapes (letters) and recognizes them as letters and reconstructs the image as editable text.  If you take a screenshot of some text and then try to capture that text, Snagit will not be able to because it is no longer "text" - it merely a picture of the text.  OCR will "re-extract" and convert the picture back into text.)

Sorry if that is redundant info for you - hopefully someone will learn from it...

I think a 14 year old made that decision at Techsmith to take the Text Capture profile out of v12. It is a step backwards. I think they should listen to their users and bring back text capture. I also used it a lot. :-(
