This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies and is no longer visible to community members. The community moderator provided the following reason for archiving: This thread is about free assets which were a limited time offer and are no longer available.

I've received an e-mail titled "Thank you! Enjoy 150+ Free Camtasia Video Assets" from email@techsmith.messages4.com. Is this legit? The download was frustratingly slow (I cancelled) and I'm concerned that it might be spam.

The e-mail reads:

To say thanks for being a Camtasia customer, we'd love to give you a free Camtasia video asset pack. This special video asset pack includes over 150+ additional free assets, valued at over $1,000! You'll find video intros, lower thirds, animated backgrounds, music tracks, and icons to use in Camtasia.

Sounds like phishing, especially with that email address. On the other hand, I hope I am wrong and that is true. It would be a nice Christmas gift from Techsmith.

Well, I must admit I was wrong. Got the email last night and just downloaded the zip file, and quite fast I might add. Thank you Techsmith for the nice gift!

Hi,

I received the email too and I also canceled because it was taking so long to download. Usually, my virus software alerts me to any problems, but it didn't this time, so it may be legit. I didn't want to take the chance.

I will be interested to see what techsmith says about this.

Yes, ed it would be a nice gift, but I looked at the email address and thought it looked "phisy" too.   :-)

I got the same offer and the download was extraordinarily slow. I’m guessing Techsmith sent out a mass email, and everyone was trying to get the goods at the same time. I don’t think the email address looks bogus. Plus, I clicked the link that explained how to download and install and it was a legit Techsmith site. Maybe they are serving it using Microsoft OneDrive. :)

Hi there

As the link is in an email message sent from TechSmith. I'm guessing they took that approach because they didn't really want the link posted publicly. So it may be somewhat of a violation for open sharing.

Only TechSmith can say for sure.

Cheers... Rick :)

I guess it makes sense.  I am calling them tomorrow to inquire.  The email they sent out the offer is from the same account I received from them with links to tutorials when I purchased Camtasia.

Same here. The link looks legit as it was on a legit Techsmith site, but it is going to take 24 minutes to download, that's with a fast computer and fast Internet connection. :-(  But, I'll not complain if some of the assets are really useful and I am getting them for free.  ;-)

UPDATE: Download time is jumping around, first said 7 hours, then 24 minutes, now an hour. Still though, it's free.

I too had a very slow download experience but after completion the new stuff looks like I just may be able to use some of it!

Thanks TechSmith.

Hi Everyone,

Yes, this email is legitimate. Sometimes we use other services to send emails on our behalf, so this is all good feedback. It is difficult to send emails like this that don't look like phishing scams. It's also good to know that you're experiencing slow downloads.

I'm going to be following up with my coworkers on this as soon as I submit this reply.

Sorry for any confusion,
Glenn

Thanks for the update, Glenn! FWIW, the bonus assets download took HOURS yesterday into the evening. The update to Camtasia 9.1.1 - a similar file size - took SECONDS this morning. I'm guessing you're using different servers, but wanted to chime in.

Hi,

I was told that the downloads were slow for a while, but the performance is now acceptable. Which ollie.faison confirmed in his post. If you see poor performance, please respond back here and let us know where in the world you're geolocated.

The promotions are being distributed in multiple ways, but you have to purchase (or upgrade) between December 4, 2017 and January 3, 2018 to qualify for the free assets.  See my newer post below on how to obtain the assets if you did not receive the email or in-product messaging.

Damn, that's quite mean.  I ordered in November 2017.
Order Date: 27 November 2017

Do you expect these to be offered anytime elsewhere say in the Library (https://library.techsmith.com/) next year?

Thanks again, Glenn! We are geolocated just a bit west of you in Portage/ Kalamazoo, Michigan. When I started the download yesterday afternoon, it calculated it would take 17 - 18 hours to download ~350 MB. That calculation updated every so often, but it was still calculating it would take hours and hours. The similar-sized Camtasia 9.1.1 update download this morning took around 90 seconds. We have around 60 Mbps download speed.

So...to be clear...we are NOT allowed to share the link?

The LIBZIP file only works with Camtasia 9 so what's the downside of sharing it for Techsmith?  As an existing user, I got an email to download but many others I know who are loyal registered users did not.

Seems REALLY weak for some to not be able to get it...

Thanks

Just had one of my LearnCamtasia students find his email invite in his spam folder, so check there. Also, if you used a Gmail address to register your software, I'd check the Promotions tab.

Hello Again Everyone,

If you're a paid Camtasia 9 (or Camtasia 3 on macOS) user, you can get access to these assets.

Open a ticket at https://support.techsmith.com. Explain that you didn't receive the notification for the promotion and include your product key (so we can verify your purchase), and someone will get back to you with the information.

This offer expires at 11:59 PM PST on January 3, 2018, so be sure to submit your ticket before then.

I believe it should be https://support.techsmith.com/

@Glenn,  I am having trouble with Camtasia.  I have submitted a ticket but tech support will only be there on Monday.  Could you please check my question in here:  https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/controls-menus-not-showing-on-window-program-doesnt-...
and see if you can give me some advice?
Thanks a lot

Thank you, Glenn! I have no idea what happened, but I suspect this thread highlighted to TechSmith that something did not go well with the release of the assets.

Enjoy, everybody!

I think the main problem is that some of the internal communication around this promotion didn't come out until after it had already started. We note the pain points and try to do better for the next thing. :)

Sorry for any troubles around this,
Glenn
