I like all the new features in the recent update but my first impression of the UI was that something was unfinished. I finally realized by comparing to the v10 UI that the difference was that lines instead of full boxes were used to separate the items on the ribbon.

I understand this is a matter of personal preference that doesn't in any way affect functionality but this new version visually looks insufficiently elegant. I prefer the old one.

Look at the comparison of the two below - click it to see full size - and see what you think.

[As an aside - why is the Email option on the Draw tab instead of the Share?]

Well, I hope the TechSmity guys don't take this the wrong way because I really like Snagit and all it does. When I first opened this version something just hit me that it was different. I didn't quite get until later what that difference was.

It's not that it looks bad in any way. I suppose in a way it's simpler and a bit cleaner and although I don't hate it, I prefer to old one better. The old UI I think is far more finished, better looking and in a word - elegant.

There are some nice touches here. The quick access bar has much better contrast in the black theme than before. I like that a lot. The File tab is great but the other tabs are kind of washed out and harder to see. I also like the names of the areas being part of that area rather than offset. But I'd really like to see those as being definite areas rather than just being separated by one line.

I wish I had beta tested this version.

Hi Manny and Fred,

We changed the Ribbon in the Snagit Editor to conform to the new Office Ribbon that Microsoft released in 2010. If you look at any of the Office Suite of products you will notice that our new Ribbon matches and now looks at home in comparison. From my understanding, Microsoft made the change to go from the Orb/Circle button in the top left to the File button because many users did not understand what the Orb was and that it was the place to look for a lot of the application's important functions. We also received a lot of this feedback and were excited to make the switch to the new Ribbon to not only conform to Microsoft standards but to clear up the confusion for some of our users.

Why is the Email option in the Draw tab? Well, it's actually a quick access to all of your outputs. As you can see in the image below, if you click the dropdown you can see all of the installed outputs and quickly select one to share your capture.

Thanks for your support of Snagit!

Hello Andy,

I appreciate you taking the time to respond. You know, I wasn't making a comment about the ribbon interface itself or the File tab. I like them. My comment is about the change of the ribbon interface from v11 to v 11.1.

My point was about the lines that separate the different items on the ribbon. Previously they were distinct boxes that clearly gave a distinct feel to each area. Now it's all blended together but separated by lines. Office 2010 doesn't do that since they actually have actual boxes. I thought the almost three dimensional look of the previous addition was a much more elegant look. I feel that it was better looking than MS and the current version.

Well, it is a matter of personal preference and I hope you understand that when I give feedback like this I'm looking out for my favorite utility program. I want it to be the best it can be.

Thanks for coming by.

Manny I would still have to agree with what you say about your favorite utility program. It is hard to let go of the things you have gotten used to in life. It was more pleasing on the eyes the old way in my opinion though. Also, thanks for the response back Andy.

You know Fred, I think you can get used to just about anything. It's not that this UI is ugly because it's not but, like you, I'd rather what is more pleasing on the eye.

What I notice in the visual comparison between v10 and v11.1 is the worse (i.e. less) contrast between the words "Image" "Hotspots" "Tag" "View" and "Share" and the background behind it. Not sure how TechSmith thinks less contrast is better, unless they are following Microsoft in this (as if MS are the experts in anything, ha!)

When I worked in corporate financial marketing years ago, it was a given, based on research, that as one's eyes age, more contrast is needed for the person to be able to easily see text. This is especially true with a reverse (white text on dark background). Thus, by making LESS contrast in v 11.1, TechSmith is making the product harder to use for all of us over the age of 40 (including me). I couldn't care less if it's more like MS Office, I prefer function over form. Please, give us the true black (or at least darker sold grey) background back!
