Update to Snagit 2.1.0 (66802) has disabled all the third party Snagit stamps I purchased! Could this have anything to do with where I put the stamps in the first place? I put them in the MacintoshHD - Applications - Snagit.app - Contents - Resources - Stamps folder. The benefit of putting it there is that I get folders within the Snagit Editor interface. What's funny is that those folders remain in the interface probably cache'd from the earlier installation, but they're inaccessible and the actual content (the stamp png's) are all gone with this install. See attached image.

I guess I could put them all back from my Time Machine backup, but we need some better options when installing 3rd party stamps.

Hi Enrique,

Yes, you are correct, when Snagit updates, the entire application "bundle" is replaced, so any custom folders or files that are placed inside the Snagit.app/ package will be lost.

Snagit 2.0 added the ability to safely add custom stamps as shown here: http://screencast.com/t/37XSLTqY

I hope this helps out, thanks for the great question.

@jason: Thanks, but...

Following those linked instructions results in all added 3rd party stamps being thrown into the Custom folder...all 500 of them! I need folders like in the Snagit interface to organize things a bit.

Also, you did not address my original 2nd question. How do I get rid of those empty folders that I created by adding my Stamps into your resources folder within your app bundle? Is there a .plist or cache file that I need to delete or recreate? While the upgrade to 2.1.0 blew away those folders and its content, those ghost folders remain.

Hi Enrique,

Apologies for the trouble with my instructions. There is a solution for adding folders so your stamps are a bit more organized.

Exit Snagit.
1) Open Finder
2) Navigate to /Users//Library/Application Support/TechSmith/Snagit/Stamps/Custom http://screencast.com/t/lPdeRCtej
3) Move all of your custom stamps folders into the "Custom" folder in Finder.
4) Re-open Snagit

This should display all of your folders and their respective stamps in a more organized fashion.

For the question about the ghost folders, I went through the same steps by placing folders inside the application bundle and then upgraded to version 2.1 and when I restarted Snagit, the ghost folders had gone away. They are loaded each time Snagit starts up, so let me know if they are still displaying after a restart of Snagit.

I hope this helps out.

Thanks,

Jason

Side note: I wish screencasts contained audio as well. Of course, then they wouldn't be screen-casts. :)

Getting back to the issue at hand, it is repeatable: a reboot didn't clear away those ghost images. See my nice Snagit image that shows the contents of my directories vs what I see within the Snagit UI. I know I can click the tiny "x" that shows up on individual stamp icons and can remove the ghosts visible in image #2 attached. However, there is no way to remove the folder ghosts seen in image #1 -- no tiny "x" is available for removing those.

With grab #3, right clicking and selecting "Restore defaults" doesn't seem to do anything either.

Am I stuck due to my mucking about within your app bundle/package? Perhaps a fresh install is warranted? Let me know where I can download the latest dmg and how to remove ALL TRACES of the prior install, cache, plist files, everything. It's my last hope if you can't reproduce my issues.

Hi Enrique,

Yes, closing Snagit and deleting the application .plist file would most likely alleviate this issue.

It can be found at "/Users//Library/Preferences/com.TechSmith.Snagit.plist".

Thanks for the detailed (and great use of Snagit) explanation of what you are seeing! :) Yeah, once the application bundle has been modified, certain results can be a bit unpredictable.

Thanks for the patience on this issue, did the new method for storing and organizing custom stamps work out for you?

Hi Jason,

I too had the same basic problem upon upgrading but it was even more exasperating as I attempted to reinstall my 3rd party stamps and it not only disabled ALL of my stamps but made Deselecting the "Stamp" group in the editor impossible! I had two groups (any two but always the stamps) selected at all times.

Additionally, the upgrade process also reset my keyboard shortcut back to the default - which was in itself quite aggravating. But once I figured out what the problem was, it at least was easily solvable.

Have now followed your steps (given to Enrique) to add back in my 3rd party stamps with success but being a retired Systems Programmer, I have the following suggestion for any/all future updates.

Suggest TechSmith should educate (i.e. customize) it's installer program so that the users aren't inconvenienced like this again. It's not that much of a problem to change the installer to respect user customizations (such as custom keyboard shortcuts and third party extensions like stamps). It's also a one and done modification, at least until you later change installers anyway.

Doing so would also prevent the user-base from not only having problems like this unexpectedly again during future updates but reduce the support time required for TechSmith as well. Additionally, it would reduce the aggravation and possible dissatisfaction from the users and thereby increase the number of referrals.

But thanks anyway for the support and the instructions.

Deleting the plist file and restarting removed all ghost folders, yay! One small correction to your path:

"/Users//Library/Preferences/com.TechSmith.Snagit.plist".

On your last question, yes, the Custom folder location for 3rd party stamps is OK although it is one level deeper. It would be nice if we could:
1) import a whole directory instead of just individual stamp PNGs, and
2) see imported stamp directories at the same level as the native stamp folders rather than having to drill down into "Custom".

This being said, I can live with it as it is. Thanks for the help and debugging!

Whoops, I definitely messed up that plist file path, sorry about that. I'm glad we got it straightened out for you. Thanks for the feedback on the custom folder levels and thanks for your patience as we worked through this one :)

I see what happened with your path because it happened to me as well when I corrected YOURS: I used angle brackets to enclose "account name" and this forum's HTML-to-text converter ate it! Be wary of this behavior in future posts.

Hi,

Here is a quick video showing the way to install the custom stamps from our website: http://screencast.com/t/NdIjHhxNq

After you have downloaded the "stagitstamps" files and double-clicked them, are you seeing the folder inside the "Custom" folder as seen in me demo video?

Let me know if you notice anything different about my video versus the way the stamps are being installed for you.

Thanks,

Jason

How you I load stamps in V2 for Mac. On PC version it is quite simple, but on Mac I have only been able to import SuperStamps just one at at time and only in the Custom folder
