If you have upgraded to SnagIt 12 and are looking for the " Text Capture Feature"
You have probably been using a version of SnagIt that can capture text up until now. I prefer to not need "Workarounds, as opposed to an actual feature"  But this is a Good One.

You can have the best of both worlds. Provided you have
a License Key for more than one version of SnagIt. If you've recently upgraded you must have another license.

You could run both versions of SnagIt on the same Computer. It’s completely legal to do this. However, you can only have one version open at a time. If you need to capture some text with version 11 and version 12 is running, close version 12.

Then Open SnagIt 11 and use it for your text captures and all the features version 11 offers. It’s not a perfect solution but both Programs share the same DataStore file. You could even run a version that Includes "Folder View" for the Library. I know a lot of people still want that.

This means that you can capture an Image using SnagIt 12 and access it in SnagIt 11’s Library. Or do captures using version 11 and edit them in version 12.  You can’t edit Text captures in version 12 but they will be in Library.

You can also do this using even “Older” versions of SnagIt as well, version 8, 9, 10. I’m uncertain how far back you can go.

They have recently added a feature in Snagit 12 that allows you to change the location of the Datastore file. If you have changed the location of the Datastore in version 12, SnagIt 11 won’t be able to capture to that folder. ( I haven’t tried to relocated my Datastore. So I haven’t actually tested for this ).

You can download and install a new or an older version from this link. Selecting the "Free Trial" Icon will download the newest version.

If you can't locate your Activation Key use this site for that.

You need to Submit your e-mail address to this Web Page to get your Key.

I know, it's a workaround. But I think a lot of people can take advantage of this.

Regards, Joe

I've been using this methodology since I installed 12.0. Thanks for the posting this information though, Joe. Sandy

I work for a corporation in which IT controls everything that I download to my computer. They just (within the last several months) started supporting SnagIt. As part of my job, I use the text capture feature all of the time and not having that option available to me in SnagIt 12 is extremely frustrating -- it is the thing that I loved the best about SnagIt --it saved me countless hours of time transcribing lists of 1000+ items. Unfortunately, I cannot simply download a previous version to my computer because it must be cleared with IT. I have an older version of SnagIt on my home computer -- I will not be upgrading because of the lack of the text capture feature :(.

Do you have Microsoft office on your system?  You can do ORC text capture by pasting your capture into One Note.
One note can read text from the image and convert it into a editable text file.
