Timer for Snagit video captures

It would be useful to have an optional timer feature for recordings. Without the user being physically present at the time of the recording, snagit would start the recording and end the recording at start and end times specified by the user.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Snagit 2018 Video recording - add a timer function to shut off recording.

I use my Snagit 2018 a lot for work to record the webinar sessions i have to
attend but i don't always want to stay to the end to stop the recording but I want to make sure I don't miss anything. I
would like to know if you would ever consider adding a timer to the video
recording function of the Snagit 2018? Please advise

I agree! Great idea. Why has Techsmith not created this for Snagit?

This does seem to be a frequent request and a timer would be appreciated.

I made a request last summer and someone replied to my request that stated he had made the same request 2 years before that along with several others. Not sure what the technical challenges are to get this programed to the computers clock but it would be a great enhancement to a really great tool.  I use the video recorder several time a week if not every day.

Did you all vote for this idea? That could help Snagit see it, just saying...

Snagit2019 doesn't seem to have any way to stop video capture after a certain amount of time or lack of video motion. That would be really helpful if it did.

I used Keyboard Maestro (Mac) to run a little macro that waits the right number of seconds then presses the key combo to stop the video capture. Simple but it works. It would be far better for Snagit to have this timer built in. For extra credit, also offer to stop the video capture after X seconds of no video motion. So it would record until the source goes quiet. That would also be very helpful.

Dave, I'm glad to see this issue still has some interest. each year I keep hoping that the Snagit engineers would let us know if it could actually be done with just adding some kind of internal software programming or if it is something more complicated. My thoughts are that the reason Snagit has not pursued this is that Snagit has the ability to cut out the blank or unwanted parts of the video.

In addition, the main reason I could use this timeout function is when I have to leave the office and the webinar is still going and I am not able to return to return until morning.

Naw, it's got to be easy. My workaround just waits then presses the key combo to stop the video capture. Hard to imagine a less difficult thing to add to an app.

In the meantime, you can explore any app that can press a key combo after a defined amount of time. Keyboard Maestro is totally overkill for this, but it does work.  Here's a screenshot of the script. Its mostly a checklist reminder to me so I get a good capture the 1st time.
