Translate Callouts

I have written a program which allows the user to extract all of the Callouts in a Camtasia Studio project, translate them to another language, and save the translated project with all of its other elements unchanged. The program is called CAMLOC.EXE.

Hi Charles are you able to post an updated download link please? This looks like exactly what I require but the file is no longer available. Many thanks.

Hello Charles Welford, I would like to test CAMLOC.EXE because it sounds like it would definitely help my workflow with Camtasia. Unfortunately the company I work for has a very rigid software policy and we cannot install anything where the license terms are unclear. Would it be possible to contact you in some way (that is not this forum) to clarify the license this tool is under? I would appreciate it very much!

Same here Charles, I am so grateful for your app and when I tested it on my computer it worked fine but I'm pretty sure that if I try it in my place of work, the IT Dptmt is going to want to know more.
Thanks a lot!

CAMLOC.EXE is not under any license.  I am simply a lone individual who posts it freely for anyone's use.  (I wrote 1.6 million lines of electronic medical record software over 25 years so I know something about writing code).

Hello Charles
I have just tested your program and it appears to work well with the latest version of Camtasia. Thank You, excellent idea and execution.

Hi Charles Welford,
it seems as if your program is exactly what I (and a lot of other people) are looking for - especially because Techsmith doesn't offer such a function until today (what I don't understand).
So I tried downloading your newest version with this link:
http://www.screencast.com/t/qakg1v5QJELF

But all my browser complain about viruses and malware, stop the download automatically and our IT department does not allow to download it. But I need it! What can we do?

Chris,

I don't know why the file is flagged as "dangerous" except to say that I am one person who wrote this, and not a company that antivirus companies can acknowledge as a known entity. I have uploaded the file without zipping it and run both MalwareBytes and Norton Antivirus  to test the file and both say it contains no threats.  I don't know any other way to reassure you that it is safe.

Dear Charles,

thank you so much
! Now the EXE is working and no complaints about viruses. I tried the program immediately and was excited but unfortunately it doesn't extract all callouts in my Camtasia project :(

This is the final Camtasia video (24 minutes): https://academy.heidelbergengineering.com/course/view.php?id=596
And below a screenshot of the missing callouts in your program.

Do you know what could be the reason for the missing callouts?
Thank you very much in advance.

I did a little research and propably I found the reason for this while comparing CamLoc to the project file, please see screenshot:

Are you aware of this issue?

I am glad you were able to download CAMLOC.EXE.  I do not know why it fails to show all of the callouts.  It is not as simple as not including certain tracks; I have tested it on many projects with callouts on more than 1 track and you are the first person to ever report this (i.e. it should list all Callouts on all tracks).  Be aware that it extracts the callouts in the order in which they appear in the project file, not the order they appear on the Timeline.  It is possible they appear in the extracted list later than other items.  A simple way to test this is to use the Copy To Clipboard command in CAMLOC.EXE, then paste it into Notepad, and search for the text of the Callout which is missing.  If it appears in Notepad then it's in the CAMLOC list, somewhere lower.  If it truly is missing, then I'd need to have a copy of your actual .TSCPROJ or .CAMPROJ file in order to troubleshoot the bug and try to fix it. (I don'nt need all the associated files, media, etc., just the .TSCPROJ or .CAMPROJ file).

Hi Charles,
indeed, this was the problem and it seemed I reacted a little too quick: The callouts are in the list, but they don't appear in the same order as they do in the timeline/video.
Did you make a how-to-video or similar for exporting and importing the CSV file? I tried a lot of times for testing purposes (all in all a whole day) and it didn't work out properly, so I came to the conclusion it would be best if our translation agency works with CAMLOC itself and then export the final tscproj-file when ready.
Thank you very much for your answer and all your help which is a lot appreciated!
Did you think about selling your tool to Techsmith / Camtasia, so they can integrate it one time?
Kind regards
Chris

I revised CAMLOC.EXE to version 5.9 which should fix issues involving CSV export/import.  Version 5.9 is at http://www.screencast.com/t/5E82fSyDO

Charles, an FYI ...

Chrome refuses to let me download; the usual bypass for security concerns is no longer offered that I can find

but was able to download OK using Edge browser

Perhaps Chrome settings? My Chrome updates all the time on its own so I think I'm on the latest. I did encounter this screen when I clicked the link above, but once I clicked to download, Chrome allowed me to save the EXE.

I've hit this numerous times with Chrome; eventually got a file to download that had a .crdownload extension; changed that to .exe and the app ran [UI says version 5.8]

running Chrome Version 73.0.3683.86 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Dear Charles,
thank you for the new version! I just had a meeting with our technical writing because I briefed them how to use your program for translations. Before they start, I wanted to give them your new version. I tried to download it, but again there are virus and malware warnings (also when downloading with Edge).

Can you please once again give me a download link like the one you gave me on March 14, 2019? (this one worked)?
THANK YOU in advance!

I am able to download it using Firefox.  Chrome blocks it and when you ask to "Learn More", one of the reasons it gives is if the software is "unfamiliar".  Since I wrote it myself, rather than being the product of some large company, it is Naturally "unfamiliar" with it.

I know, we have the same problems with some of our EXEs I created with Adobe Captivate. Unfortunately it's not working with Firefox as well and our IT forbids to download something that is marked as potential malware.
What trick did you do last time when you send me the new URL that worked out?
It would be so great if you could help us out!

I did no trick.  I can't explain why it is so unpredictable.  The only "trick" was that I posted it as the actual .EXE but before I posted it as .ZIP of the .EXE.  My only other suggestion is for us to use some other method such as Dropbox or Google Drive.

Good morning Charles, maybe you can once again try to ZIP the EXE file? Because what I downloaded and what worked was a ZIP file actually. Sorry to annoy you :(

Not an annoyance. I'm sorry it is creating problems for you.  OK, so I have replaced it with the ZIP version, CAMLOC.ZIP, at http://www.screencast.com/t/5E82fSyDO

something to consider ...

when I try and download the .exe, Chrome complains as described; but the download still happens; however,  the file shown in the download folder shows  with a ".crdownload " extension [not .exe]

but just changing the extension to .exe usually does the trick

Hi Charles. I am trying to download a copy of the latest version of CAMLOC by am unable to get any of the links to work. Would you be able to post a new link where I can get the file. It would be an absolute lifesaver.
thank you Sue Heldey

I have not changed the file since the last few days when people said they were able to download it. However, when I try to download it, I do get warnings from both Firefox and Chrome that it contains a virus (Even though it doesn't). I am able to download it using Microsoft Edge. I guess you'll have to try to do it that way. I think that the browsers don't recognize it as coming from a standard company and therefore flag it as potentially containing malware.

Hi Charles!
We did a first experiment with our technical writing team, they did a test translation in CamLoc. I was not able to open the file they've exported with the help of CamLoc (they don't have a Camtasia licence, only the e-learning department). Camtasia only shows the following message.

Maybe you can help?

I would need you to send me the file that can't be opened to try to see what is preventing it from opening.  This is the first time a user of CAMLOC has told me this, so I don't know what the hangup is.

Hi Charles!

I had a screensharing telco with my colleague from technical writing and together we searched for potential bugs or problems that may cause our problem with CamLoc. In some aspects we had success but all in all we came to the solution that CamLoc won't help us if the translation agencies won't be able to work with the CSV import/export function (this didn't work for us).

Before we stop using this wonderful tool, we wanted to ask you if it may be possible that you take a look at what we're doing and you can tell us how to do better? We would be willing to further develop this tool with you and of course to learn how we can manage translations with it.

We think a screensharing session would be best to show you our way of using your program and you could give us direct feedback.
Please let us know if this is an option for you and if you have time.

Thank you!
Chris

PS: Is there any restriction in the program for languages that can't be translated with it?
We want to translate the project into German, Spanish, French, Italian and Japanese. We assume Japanese would be aproblem because there are no adaquate signs in CamLoc?

I am not an expert on this subject, but I believe it may be possible to still use CAMLOC for Japanese if you can paste the characters into the New Text box, or use the Import from CSV to import the new text if you can place the correct characters into the CSV file (e.g. using Excel).

I will have time to do screensharing the week of April 22.  Are you using the link at  http://www.screencast.com/t/5E82fSyDO i.e. version  5.8  There was a bug in the Excel Import/Export prior to version 5.8 which should work correctly in 5.8.

Hi Chales! First THANK YOU!

We did use CamLoc 5.8 (newest version you offered us in this thread) for all experiments we did.

I talked to my 2 colleagues and these dates would fit for us three (German time - I hope there's not too much time shift :) ):
  • April 23rd free the whole day
  • April 25 in the morning
We're really looking forward to our meeting! Can you let us know your email please?
Kind regards
Chris

You can e-mail me at cwelford@uic.edu.
I don't speak German. I hope that's not a problem.
We can set up a time via e-mail. I can be available either day.
