Unable to edit certain .png icon files

So I download a lot of icons from www.flaticon.com. Some of them are black icons and others have multiple colors. I've found that when I import a colored icon png file everything is normal within SnagIt, however when I download and import black .png icon files I am unable to edit the image and also cannot export to a .png file. Its very odd. Here are two icons you can test it with actually...

This one works: https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/car_741407#term=car&page=1&position=10

This one doesn't: https://www.flaticon.com/free-icon/car_335049#term=car&page=1&position=5

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this to us. Looks like the black ones are in a format we're not expecting. We'll take a look into improving this, but in the mean time I was able to fix it by opening the image in Preview and saving as a TIFF (with alpha layer) and then editing that in Snagit. Once I was back in Snagit I was able to save that TIFF as a png again and everything worked as expected. I hope this helps!

Hi Luke

First, I note this is in the Mac section, so I'm assuming this is happening on a Mac?

Second, is this aspect of "opening the image in Preview" something unique to the Mac version of SnagIt? I'm not sure I've ever heard of a function in SnagIt that allows opening an image in a kind of "Preview" mode.

Thanks... Rick :)

Hi Rick,

Sorry about the confusion! This is a mac issue, and preview isn't a Snagit function, it's a built-in application in macOS that allows you to view image/pdf files.

Luke, could you provide me with some instructions on how to save an image as a TIFF in preview? Struggling with that..

Sure thing!

1 - Open the image in preview

2 - Duplicate the image

3 - Save as TIFF

I hope this helps!

Hi,

We released a 2018.2.0 update today that should support these image files without any need to convert! If you run into any images that still don't work, we'd love a copy of those images so we can try to support them as well.
