Unable to save Voice Narration in Camtasia Studio 7

I cannot record Voice Narration with Windows 8 and C7. I hate Win8, but my work forces me to use it.

Note: This topic was created from a reply on the Is Windows 8 compatible with Camtasia 7? topic.

Steve, this error may have nothing to do with the fact that you're running Windows 8. The error message simply indicates that the file may be in use. Try saving your voice narration with a different file name.

Thanks for the quick reply. I've tried 10 different random names. I've also rebooted my machine to make sure another app was not using the mic. The mic is good in Control Panel | Sounds, but C7 just doesn't let me save the darn file. Maybe its a Win8 issue? Can you try to reproduce? Thanks!

Steve, when I forked your question into a new thread, the screenshot from your original question didn't carry over. I'll repost it here:

Steve, I'm not able to reproduce the error you describe.

As a workaround, you could try doing your narration in Audacity, which is a free tool. If you go this route, just make sure you save as 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, Stereo, as this is the best format for import into Camtasia Studio.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mike;

Are you using Camtasia Studio 7 on Windows 8 or 10? Please note that Camtasia Studio 7 is not supported on, nor compatible with either of those operating systems. If you install Camtasia Studio 7 on Windows 7, do you have the issue?

Still no answer for this? I tried camtasia 8, and the waveform is almost invisible at any track size. So far, both 7.8 and the current version of 8 are completely unusable by all of the tutorial creators where I am working. Time for a new program?

I'm using C6 on Win8, and get the same error.  Judging by other posts from 2yr ago, looks like Voice Narration has always been broken???

Wow... this is garbage as I have used Camtasia Studio 7 very regularly now for over a year and it's always worked perfectly with Windows 7. Last week I switched from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and have just tried to record a brief screen shot tutorial. The first issue I noticed was that the microphone levels do not register.... after toying with it and my computer and determined everything was fine with my mic... I recorded it anyway. It turned out that even though the decibel meter was not registering it did record my narration.... But I wanted to add in a more polished narration and tried to re-record it when I ended up getting the same error mentioned above.

I am really surprised as this was posted many months ago and it looks like no one has resolved this issue? I thought Tech Smith had top notch support?

Windows 8.1.  Same issue.  It magically worked one time, then has given me the error above ever since.

The same issue, it looks like they are not going to get it fixed in Camtasia 7. Prepare your money upgrade to 8.

Here's what has happened to me: If I record a tutorial with sound, everything is happy. If I record w/o sound, I am unable to go back & record the narration. I never had this problem before, but I have a new computer (Windows 8). Very sad to see this has not been corrected.

I have experienced the same issues.... had Windows7 and Camntasia worked well. I upgraded to Windows 8 and installed Camtasia and I get that same error of not being able to save the voice narration file. Very frustrating indeed. I followed the advice given earlier in this tread of using the free Audacity application. It worked like a charm. audacityteam.org

I have tried to duplicate this using Camtasia Studio 7 with Windows 8.1 and I can verify that I get the same error message. Windows 10 will be coming out soon enough too.

So I hope someone from TechSmith like Kelly Mullins or someone will address this problem. I have not tried this voice narration using Camtasia Studio 8 as of yet. If there is any problems with the same issue on that version post it here and I will try to duplicate it too.

I may try to contact someone at TechSmith to see if they are going to or are planning on making a fix for this problem or not. Thanks for posting everyone and this is not a good thing in my opinion for those who do not want to or cannot afford to upgrade their Camtasia Studio Software at this time. I hope that TechSmith addresses this issue and gives us all an update on what steps they are taking to fix this if any.

Thanks for posting. Have a great day/night.

Same thing happens with Win 10 released version. Will try it on Mac version. That often solves problems with crappy Windows application software. BTW, I tried it on Win 10 running native on PC and Win 10 VM running on Parallels hosted on a Mac. Identical problems.

I can't say that this will fix your issue but what I have been doing (Camtasia 8.6) is to use the "Voice Narration" menu choice. This is often hidden behind the "More..." button. Get the video to the right point and press "Record" (it doesn't have the 3-2-1 feature, you're on when you hit record. It will create the audio on an open track although it may not appear to be doing so. When you are done ((give yourself a couple of seconds after speaking to create blank trailer space) press "Stop recording" and the system will ask you to save the audio and once you do that it will show up in the track. Then you can treat is as normal.

Is there a solution for this? Still cannot save voice narration. Why should I have to upgrade or even use a free voice recorder software? Can Camtasia not fix this?

Unfortunately, Camtasia 7 is no longer supported by TechSmith. I've had contact with technical support myself and they will not be fixing the problem. It would require a maintenance update to fix it and that won't be coming.

I do use Camtasia 8 on Windows 8.1 and it works well. However, Camtasia 9 is coming. If you can wait until it's released I think that would be your best move. See this post to see what coming. https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/techsmiths-camtasia-future-roadmap

Just  out of curiosity - I found a solution that is: if you force the extension ".Wav" after the name of your file , this work. If you just leave the default extension this fails.
