Update to Jing Outputs

Here at TechSmith, we are continuously revising and updating our products to make sure they meet our customers’ needs. As we took a look at Jing we noticed that the usage rates on the Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and FTP outputs were very low. The costs involved in keeping up with frequent API changes for the social destinations weren’t sustainable in a free product. And the FTP output would require a big overhaul. As a result we have decided to remove those outputs.

Moving forward, Jing will allow you to send files to screencast.com as well as save to your desktop. If having the ability to share your images and videos through various outputs is appealing to you, check out Snagit. With Snagit, you have the flexibility of multiple output options as well as the freedom to record longer videos, blur sensitive information within images, scroll long webpages, and more. Try Snagit free, and see why nearly 7 million users continue to love it.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact us. We'd love to hear from you.

So here I am -- feeling proud of myself for still having an older version of Jing that supports FTP, then giving that install file to many of the users who are upset by Jing's STUPID F' move.

I thought it was all behind me -- when my OLD version of Jing insists I update and force disables my sharing feature.

Well Jing. Well TechSmith. I officially ban you! I hope your company becomes irrelevant.

I'll find another service that offers what I need.

Give ShareX and LightShot a try.  Both have the features that I need and I'm quite happy with them.

ShareX seems suuuuuuuuuuuper cool. LOADED with features. I'm slowly working on setting it all up to be my primary. Thank you Ed K.

For everyone else... Dump TechSmith. It's one thing to stop supporting protocols that require maintenance. FTP has been around for decades.

Freaking liars. Techsmith sucks

They don't seem to be at all interested in adding a simple print button to Jing. So, why do you think they would have any interest in working on more advanced features?

https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/no_print_function

This forced update sucks. Our IT group has our computers locked down. We cannot install anything without their admin rights. It was like pulling teeth to get them to install this for me in the first place. I'm not going to even bother asking about installing the forced update. They will just laugh at me. So, it looks like this is the end of the road for Jing (and Techsmith) and I. Which, I'm sure they want to drive us all away from the free tool towards their pay tool anyway. I completely understand that corporations cannot operate on free, but this is no way to win over customers either. I don't see much difference monetarily from free software versus loss of customer base. You're not making money either way.

If you have Jing already installed on your machine then you don't need to upgrade it.  As far as I can see, the old version will continue to work but over time certain features may stop working such as FTP because the technology will have changed on Facebook, Twitter and even Screencast.com.  It is then you might need to upgrade if you want to continue using these features.

Some of us have moved on to something better.  In my case I have started using Nimbus but somebody here posted a link for Lightshot and that too looks promising.

Choose your poison!!!

So is this a done deal or is Tech-Smith going to reconsider this change? Jing is unusable to me without FTP upload. I hope the hack to prevent forced updates works. I will never upload anything to screencast.

Ajax and others, just move on.  ShareX permits you to upload to FTP and the workflow is quite nice.  The only downside to ShareX that I see is that you can't customize the name of the file you upload via FTP as easily as you could have done with JIng.  If that isn't a big deal, then ShareX is your replacement for Jing. It also lets you take videos (with audio) and upload that to a variety of places including FTP.  For these reasons, I see ShareX as a nice alternative to Jing, to SnagIt and to Camtasia Studio.

OMG, you stupid Techsmith IDIOTS. I hate companies like yours.  You have wasted so much of my time removing the FTP function.  I was happily paying $5 per year when you charged for Jing.  I WANT TO PAY FOR JING you morons.  I seriously had so much love for you guys because I thought you guys were all about making cool products for people.  It turns out YOU GUYS DONT CARE AT ALL ABOUT YOUR CUSTOMERS.  Read this loud and clear.  People want to pay for Jing.  They want to pay for jing.  They want to pay for jing...IDIOTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can understand that people want to pay for Jing and that is alright but if you read the comments from the employees you would see a justifiable reason as to why FTP was removed. It is your right to your feelings and I am sorry that you do not like TechSmith anymore and feel they do not listen to customers. I can say not every question here is always answered or explained and it would be nice if they were. But TechSmith does listen to their customers it is just the fact if they choose to keep or remove certain functions of the software and that is based on costs, changes, users requests etc. so I can understand why they removed the FTP Feature but will also say I will miss it too but SnagIt has this option and it is not free but a fair price in my opinion for all it does.

I guess I live by the old world saying of you get what you pay for but even so when you pay for things in life it turns out it is always not what one expected so I can understand how users feel but canot change anything.

I am sorry, but your posting is simply wrong.

*** I can understand that people want to pay for Jing and that is alright but if you read the comments from the employees you would see a justifiable reason as to why FTP was removed. ***

The onliest reason was "maintenance". They never answered which kind of maintenance they need for a protocol that didn ́t change since a long time.

*** But TechSmith does listen to their customers  ***

Have a look in the SnagIt-Forums. You will see that SnagIt-Users complain about this function since many years and TechSmith does NOT even answer questions.

*** but SnagIt has this option ***

I have SnagIt and I can tell you: It hasn ́t!
The key-feature is "copy filepath to clipboard" and SnagIt ignors the masses of user-requests in the forums since many years.

All the best, Julian!

No Julian my posting is not wrong. I as you have the right to our own feelings and views/opinions. You stated:

"*** I can understand that people want to pay for Jing and that is alright but if you read the comments from the employees you would see a justifiable reason as to why FTP was removed. ***

The onliest reason was "maintenance". They never answered which kind of maintenance they need for a protocol that didn ́t change since a long time."

If you look at n.pulling, Employee post above the reason(s) were given which were:

"Here at TechSmith, we are continuously revising and updating our products to make sure they meet our customers’ needs. " So that is a justifiable statement and reason and I respect your opinion even if you disagree with me on this issue.

You also stated:

"*** But TechSmith does listen to their customers  ***

Have a look in the SnagIt-Forums. You will see that SnagIt-Users complain about this function since many years and TechSmith does NOT even answer questions. "

I agree that not all of the questions have been addressed or answered in any part of this forum board. But that FTP Option is available in the newest version of SnagIt. You have to also keep in mind that this is a user to user forum and not a Technical Support Forum Board Officially. It is just for users to help other users with issues for learning how to use the software and sometimes Employees jump in to answer a question. However I do not expect TechSmith to just answer all of these questions about issues that are not what in my opinion this forum board is supposed to be and there is a TechSmith Support that is free for people who want to contact them about an error or issue with any of their software applications. More and more I see more error related questions or complaints and I can understand that from the users as I have had them myself to be fair. I just contact TechSmith Support for questions on certain features or error messages and cannot expect the other users to answer something error or functions/feature related in the forum as they are not the software developers. Just saying this as this forum was setup for users to help each other and not turn into a complaint forum or Bi** Forum Board setting.

You also stated:

"*** but SnagIt has this option ***

I have SnagIt and I can tell you: It hasn ́t!
The key-feature is "copy filepath to clipboard" and SnagIt ignors the masses of user-requests in the forums since many years. "

Have you taken a look at this link about the FTP ?

SnagIt FTP Not Working

It might answer your question or not. I know I have used this feature after taking a screenshot image and short video and when in the Editor for SnagIt using the Share and the FTP Option. If it is not working for you then maybe contact the Support Department and see what they say if you are having issues. I will state I have not used this feature for awhile in SnagIt 12 but it has worked in the past for me.

And just to add when you stated that SnagIt ignores the masses of the user-requests in the forums since many years. Like I stated there are a lot of questions that are not answered but that does not necessarily mean they are not seen or logged by TechSmith. And no that is not a statement to defend them as they can do that themselves. It is just stating that just because a question has not been answered here does not mean it has not been sen and that every option for a feature request cannot be put in for everything a user may want. I have requested many features through the years myself and some made the list and others did not. I cannot get upset with that as it is their decision and if there are not enough reasons for the feature it I live with it and move on.

I mean you look at things your way and others look at things there way about what is and is not being done but put yourself in there shoes and look from the other side. If you can build a better product or answer all of the questions or start a business that has the software with that many users I guess you would handle it all then and give the users everything they want and never leave a question unanswered then Julian. If you ever do that let me know as I would be on board to see how it turns out for you. Not a negative towards you just making a statement whether we agree or disagree on things.

So yes my statement or posting in your opinion may be wrong but others could say that about your statements too or any other users statements/posts. Anyway I am not arguing you opinions just defending mine. Al is well in my book. Thanks for the feedback and have a great day/night. I also wish you all the best.

Regards, Fred.

Hi Fred,

do you really believe that keepint FTP would need "frequent API changes"???
TechSmith was asked exactly that ... and didn ́t answer.

--> I agree that not all of the questions have been addressed or answered in any part of this forum board.

Not all? Most requests for the "copy-URL-to-clipboard"-feature are answered wrong. And when re-asking, the requests are ignored. There is a pattern. And questions that match to the pattern are NEVER seriously answered.

--> But that FTP Option is available in the newest version of SnagIt.

Also not true. The recent version hasn ́t got this feature. And ... if you look into the SnagIt-Forum, the first announcements about this feature is more then five years old.

--> Have you taken a look at this link about the FTP ?

You didn ́t post a link.

--> It might answer your question or not. I know I have used this feature after taking a screenshot image and short video and when in the Editor for SnagIt using the Share and the FTP Option

The feature users request about are CERTAINLY not the ones you had. You would be the onliest SnagIt-User that had that features.
It ́s not about "share" and "FTP". It ́s about "upload to FTP and copy URL to clipboard". This feature was NEVER present in SnagIt and it was ALWAYS present in Jing.

Please look closely on the software before you try to correct me.

--> Like I stated there are a lot of questions that are not answered but that does not necessarily mean they are not seen or logged by TechSmith.

You are right on that point. Eventually TechSmith saw the requests and decidet to ignore them.

Look at the SnagIt-Forum, here are two examples:

https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/copy_ftp_url_to_clipboard
https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/new_output_for_snagit

Read into those threads, realize that this topic is one of the most-discussed topics and tell me again!

--> If you can build a better product or answer all of the questions or start a business that has the software with that many users I guess you would handle it all then and give the users everything they want and never leave a question unanswered then Julian.

I already told you: I am running my own business and I know about bouth sides.
But I would definitely have a big alarm in my head when I see users discussing in my forums about suggestions for competitors.

--> Anyway I am not arguing you opinions just defending mine.

There is no need to defend any of your argues, as long as as you don ́t try to "speak for others". As you see in the forum, "FTP" and "copy to clipboard" are very essential features for lots of users. If you say you can "understand" that they "need to remove FTP because of maintenance costs" ... it soulds like you don ́t realize what this features are about.

All the best, Julian!

Yes Julian I do know what these features are about and I don't find them real necessary in what I do right now but it is TechSmith's decision not mine. I have never spoke for others as you and Joe seem to like to put words into others mouths or just respect your opinions and post only so if you cannot agree to disagree I will not argue. By the way I hope your business goes well and you can develop a better software than TechSmith someday that is more to your liking. That is my challenge to you if you think I am not aware of how to use their software and you are such a Pro. Bye.

P.S. At least  I am smart enough to know this a user to user forum for others to help each other learn and not constantly knock what we do not have. They post things in the wrong areas not that helps or anything but instead of posting what you do not like try posting in the Ideas section and maybe the results would be different or maybe not. I do not control how TechSmith handles this forum board just know what the true use of it was setup for as I have been using their software for many many years. I do know the software and train others to use it so you can think what you want I will no longer respond to childish games of this and that with people like you or others. I will always try to help and still post no matter who agrees or disagrees with what I have to say.

All the best to you too and I hope you can do something better as you make it sound so easy to implement everything people want. I say and always have I understand their requests but have to realize that not everything in life can make the cut. It also helps to post in the right sections when asking for things instead of the portion of the forum board that is designed to help others learn. And if you feel that is speaking for others then oh well.

Also there is a Copy All Function in the Editor after taking the screenshot that allows you to post to Word or somewhere else like PowerPoint. Not directly to FTP which I do know that. Unless you are just wanting to do this directly after taking the screenshot then I guess one could setup a profile for it but not FTP.

All the best as I said, Fred.

Hi Fred,

-> By the way I hope your business goes well and you can develop a better software than TechSmith someday that is more to your liking. That is my challenge to you

My Business is "communication", I do seminars about that topic.
I don ́t know why "you" want to "give me a challenge ..." in developing a software. Otherwise I could give you a challenge in built up a better communication.

-> Also there is a Copy All Function in the Editor after taking the screenshot that allows you to post to Word or somewhere else like PowerPoint. Not directly to FTP which I do know that. Unless you are just wanting to do this directly after taking the screenshot then I guess one could setup a profile for it but not FTP.

This whole thread is about FTP. This whole discussion is about FTP. TechSmith removed some other features also and nobody complaints. This is only, only, only about FTP. So why do you suggest to copy something to Word or into PowerPoint, if this is not the topic?

Look at this thread: How many users are "happy" about the developement? How many users complain? About "what" do they complain?

What do you think about the mentioned feature? You wrote it:

Yes Julian I do know what these features are about and I don't find them real necessary in what I do right now but it is TechSmith's decision not mine.
So why the hell do you try to calm down tons of users compalining about the lack of a feature that you don ́t need? It is just absurd what you are doing.

You are telling us:

1. We should understand Techsmith
2. TechSmith would listen to us
3. SnagIt would have this feature (not true)
4. You don ́t find this feature neccecary.

There is a really  simple question to you:

If you don ́t find this feature neccecary, what the hell do you try to discuss here? Isn ́t it easy to understand, that the tons uf users complaining here about this feature have a complete different opinion???

All the best, Julian!

It seems that all that can constructively be said about this topic has been said. To reiterate, we are sorry to have caused users of the FTP output frustration and disruption. We still believe it to be the right decision for the majority of our customers (see the responses from Nicole Pulling, Doug Troxell, and Dave Zink for details). Since the conversation has moved beyond civil disagreement, I'm going to go ahead and close the thread. Feel free to start a new one if there's a new angle you'd like to explore but also keep in mind the community guidelines.

For those on this thread who have chosen to keep using Jing or Snagit...we're grateful and will keep working to serve you better. For those who have chosen to migrate to a different tool, we wish you success and hope we'll have another chance to serve you in the future.

This conversation is no longer open for comments or replies.
