Upgrade from Camtasia 9 to 2018/2019

Hi guys,

Been using Camtasia, Snagit, Jing etc. for many years.  When I upgraded to Camtasia 9 and Snagit 2018 I started having problems with both.  The Snagit editor doesn't show recorded videos, just a blank screen and I can only view the recording if I save/export.  Camtasia 9 has been difficult to use.  It crashes (or just vanishes completely) and playback stutters, particularly if there are more than a couple of tracks.  This happens on all 3 machines I have tried it on, ranging from i7 with 16GB RAM to i7 with 32GB and AMD Ryzen hexacore with 32GB.  All running Windows 10.  I can run Camtasia 8 on all those all day long and it's rock stable.  Same with the older version of Snagit (7 I think it was)

So before I pay for the latest upgrades I'd like to get a feel for how the latest are working, particularly if you had problems with Camtasia 9.

I love all the Techsmith products I have used, but I just wasn't impressed with the stability of the latest versions I have.  I want to be impressed again :)

Best regards,

If you haven't already done so in Camtasia 9, go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and set the Hardware Acceleration to "Use software-only mode". That should make it much more stable. Like you, I'm running pretty nice hardware and it still crashes occasionally, but overall it works well. Prior to making this change, it was really unstable and exhibited some truly bizarre behavior (it seemed to have a mind of its own).

As for SnagIt, I'm still running v13 which has never given me any problems, but I don't use it for recording video. It works great for my screen shot editing needs.

Hi Brian,

I only had it crash once couple of days ago, but it took about half an hours work with it - even though I had it recover, most of the work was lost - it's set to auto-save every 2 minutes..  But the real problem for me is that it just stutters on the playback so bad sometimes.  I turned the hardware acceleration off and it didn't make any difference.   I was working with a video that was only 2 minutes long and had 4 tracks, so it wasn't anything excessive.  On another computer I have both C8 and C9.  I can work on 2 hour long videos in C8 but C9 just chokes on videos that are just a few minutes long and starts to stutter in the playback.  Sometimes it skips couple of seconds and sometimes it's like a broken CD.  I was told that could be because this computer has Nahimich audio, but my other computer doesn't and shows exactly the same symptoms.

I have been with camtasia since I think version 2, many, many years ago (like 2003/2004), and never had issues with it, until 9.  Have tried other video editing software but most of them are either horribly bad or horribly expensive - neither of which is to my liking ;)

Best regards,
Arnor

That seems odd, as I don't have the same issue and it isn't a common complaint. I suspect that there's something else on your PC or in the way its configured that's causing the problem. At this point, your best bet is to open a ticket with Tech Support. They're very responsive and helpful.

Hi Brian,
Will do.  However, this has happened on 3 different PCs with C9 and none of them have had any issues with C8.  I'll do some more testing over the weekend and submit a support ticket.

Best regards,
Arnor

Hello Arnor
for sure i can't give advice here )
but strange enough ,i had few crashes today as well, running the 2018.0.7 (build 4045) and i was wandering if it's my computer  (it's a new  hp laptop with i7-8550U CPU 1.8GHz up to 4GHz with 12 GB RAM, i'd be happy to get an advise on why it happen or what may cause it.
