Upgrade from SnagIt 3 to SnagIt 2018

I had Snagit 12 / Snagit Mac 3 on a MacBook Pro that died. I can see the product and licence key in the products area of my TechSmith account.

I have a new MacBook Pro and installed Snagit 2018 to see what improvements have been made—they're great. So I decided to upgrade. However, I hadn't installed Snagit Mac 3, so I'm wondering if I purchase an upgrade to 2018, will it work as there is no licensed version of Snagit Mac 3 on this MacBook?

I also downloaded Snagit Mac 3 but it just crashes, I don't know if that's because I had already installed and run Snagit 2018 or it's incompatible with the new MacBook Pro with quad‐core Intel Core i5 chip.

So please tell me how I proceed—do I just buy an upgrade licence and it will work, or do I have to get Snagit Mac 3 installed and running with the old licence first?

Snagit 3 is no longer supported on Apple's latest operating system, so that's likely why you're seeing crashes. You don't need to install version 3 to upgrade to 2018. If you download 2018 (which you can trial for 30 days if you'd like), then once you buy an upgrade license, you can just enter your key by choosing Snagit > Activate.
