Direct USB mics sound awful...  I want to do a mic, xlr cable, then USB external audio interface (like Focusrite Studio 2i2). Will this work with Camtasia and Snagit on Windows PC?

Sure, that's close to what I do with medium diaphragm mic, preamp box via analog line in connection. Just a matter of selecting the right input to record with.

Yes, it will work, and show up as a selection in Camtasia. I use my Focusrite Clarett 4Pre in to Camtasia 2018, via USB-C. Having said all that, with 3, very high quality dynamic mics (Heil, Shure SM7B and EV RE-20) the auto-volume in Camtasia does not seem to work all that well, and the resulting files are nowhere near as clean as I get straight in to Adobe Audition. Same if I just perform a voice over, after screen recording.

I ONLY record system audio now, via Camtasia. Not sure why the audio is so poor, but it is.

I now use an external Zoom recorder/interface and then sync up afterwards.

You may also want to look into a free software called voice meter banana. It has done wonders for my usb mic audio.

When it comes to USB Audio Interfaces I use them for recording guitar, vocals, drums, etc. I have used the Focusrite 6i6, and a Discontinued PreSonus 22VSL Usb Interface, and currently the PreSonus Studio 6|8 USB Audio Interface.

Now as "bretts" stated the Auto-Volume Slider Control in Camtasia does not work well if at all when using the Pro Audio Interfaces so one might have to rely on just what they hear in the headphones and the meter levels on the Interface they use if they have them for the Gain Levels. Camtasia does not truly support Pro Audio Equipment even though they are USB as it in my opinion was more setup for using USB Heaset/Mics.

Most Pro Audio Interfaces use ASIO in their Pro DAW Software and Windows uses WDM but it can be made to work as "emiller" stated that using VoiceMeter/Banana is an option as I have used this option and it worked fine for me.

I do believe TechSmith is working on some solutions for better audio but not sure if it will have support for ASIO or any better options with the level meters for Pro Audio Equipment. For me I usually record my Audio (Script) separate from my video if I truly want to get some professional audio results as TechSmith has been behind in this market and hopefully will make some changes that will have better options soon. I think they lose out with a lot of users who are using Pro Audio Equipment. I do know these features have been requested for many years now and nothing has changed or been integrated and I am pretty sure ASIO will not been on the high priority list or the Pro Audio Equipment but we can keep our fingers crossed.

Thanks for posting and have a great day/night.
