Using Camtaisa to record a video camera feed and save the file the same way as a screen recording

I have been using Camtasia as an aid to my computer classes for many years.  it has helped many students to go back and review the videos later at their own speed.  The beauty of this process is that i hit the record button, do my demonstration of the software,  click stop recording and I am prompted to name the file. I use fairly long descriptive names for my files so students can search for the video they need.  I need to know if i can do this while recording a camera video source.  when i have tried to screen capture a video camera from the screen, i have ended up with a massive file.  if i try to select the camera as a source i have to save it to a Camrec format which later has to be produced into a more normal format like mp4 or avi.  wil to some this may seem like a minor point, it is not.  i record dozens of video per day and even using the automated process it is a huge impediment.  am i missing something?  is there someone i could talk to about this issue
