Using webcam while recording. Why does the video box "go away" during recording?

I want to show myself during some screencasts. Before I begin, I activate the webcam (built in on my macbook pro). I see myself. WHen i start to record, the image/camera box goes away. It doesnt show up again until editing. But I need to see myself if i am showing a prop or worse...do something awkward!

Is there a way to show the camera view the entire time? I use Camtasia for Mac. I am looking for screen in screen viewing while filming.

thank you

The "video box" is simply a preview to help you get ready. Currently there is no way to view it the entire time you are recording.

Originally, web cam recording was considered secondary to screen recording, but as we've added more general video features its importance is changing... I'll make certain we have an item for this on our backlog. (I think we already do.)

However... it would be very useful for us to know (for prioritization purposes) if a number of people would find this useful? How about it? Anyone else find this useful? (PLEASE hit +1 if you do)

yes it would be a huge help to view while recording. Now it is a bit like trying to record audio without listening to it. Also it would be good to know which area of the screen the image is on in relation to the content.
Thank you

Yes - I record my camera video separately from my screencast. I'd love to be able to monitor the video as I record it!

I had the exact same concern as Doug. I would like to see myself while recording the entire video. If you're recording a powerpoint but also want to use a prop or show something in the camera you can't tell if you are even showing it to the camera properly

OMG! People have been asking for this for over 3 years and it's still not available?! C'mon! I am shocked that this was never even considered a basic option. :( I thought surely it could be done, I just was doing it wrong. Now, I learn that this software doesn't do it... :(

I have a customer that has asked for this as well. They have a lecturer that would like to be able to see the webcam preview whilst doing PowerPoint presentations.

We would like this functionality. We have instructors recording lectures, but introduce the lecture to a webcam, before switching to a slide based format.

I loved Camtasia for the PC...the floating recorder box/controls popped up during recording of a powerpoint, which helped gauge time, audio, etc. When recording a powerpoint for the Mac, everything disappears from the screen, and I have to use keyboard shortcuts to pause, stop, or resume the recording. I use an ergo keyboard, so the keystrokes do not map well necessarily to a standard mac keyboard. PLEASE let the controller appear while recording. PS Is there a way to do this that I am missing?
PSS: The Mac version is WAY clunkier to use when compared to the PC version.

zoom.us does it well. They have a preview window. You can maximize or resize and place anywhere you like. You can even minimize. Camtasia and Techsmith relay should have it that way if they want to keep competitive.

On a MAC it is easy to see yourself as you record using Camtasia. All you need to do is start recording normally in Camtasia, and then open Quicktime. Click done when the quicktime dialog box opens. Then go to File and select start new recording. Quicktime will open up a screen showing your webcam footage. Place this screen in an area that isnt being recorded, or on a separate monitor and you can see yourself as Camtasia records as well. It is important not the place the quicktime monitoring window in the Camtasia recording area, or you will have two webcam recordings in your final video.... Hope this helps...

I can NOT BELIEVE it's been 7 YEARS and it's still not implemented?  OMG you can get yourself on the screen for $15 a YEAR why doesn't this EXPENSIVE software have it yet when people have been crying OUT for it to happen, are they waiting for the ITCH to stop (7 year itch)?????  The EDITING software might be more useful but not seeing yourself on screen while recording?  JUZ Duzzn' make sense guys, what if you have a booger hanging out of your nose (or worse still stuck to your face) while doing an hour long recording of a pre-recorded webinar?  Do you wait til EDITING to discover you look like a total 'Kin DORK and have wasted your time?  What about if your background looks crap, the eentsy teentsy lil screen don't show SH1T, certainly not enough to be useful for tweaking.  Personally I wanna KNOW if I look like a EFFing idiot while I am recording, this spoiled my whole MOOD and wasted several hours searching for the "menu" item "SHOW CAMERA" in the software AND in the tutorials and HELP files online, thank phk for the forum entries or I would have been more frustrated and angry NOT being able to find it. grrrr  Worst thing is, you can see people doing LOTS OF videos ONLINE where they MOVE the camera screen out of the way WHILE RECORDING (obviously using SCOM) :(  COME ON CAMMASTASIA stop being a girly popstar and make something EVERYONE likes!

Hi Ross,

Just to clarify -- are you asking if there is a way to record a webcam? Or if there's a way to see yourself *as* you're recording a webcam?

If you're looking for an answer to the first option, then yes. It is possible. Click the Camera button on the recorder interface and you should be good to go.

If you're asking about the second option -- there's still no way *within* Camtasia to keep a camera preview up during recording. However, you could open another program, like Facetime, on a second monitor and create a preview that way.

Hope this helps!

I'm surprised that after 2 years, camtasia's developers still have not added this basic, critical feature (or is the tiny "Webcam" preview that cannot be resized new?). It would even be fine if Camtasia picked up the streaming webcam preview during the screen recording because a simple workaround would be to put the streaming webcam preview on one side the screen and the relevant presentation on the other side of the screen, and then crop it during editing.

People really need to be able to see themselves while recording.

Cedoyle mentioned wait of 2 years 4 years back. Camtasia users NEED to SEE themselves while recording otherwise they have to re-record as the video recording has not come properly.

TechSmith should IMMEDIATELY implement this feature or provide a time frame for implementation of this feature. We procure new versions in the hope to get this feature but find that only some minor niceties are only implemented, while important features are not.

Ditto.
I just bought Camtasia because I thought I could integrate webcam while recording. It took me hours of looking at tutorials and searching forums to find out it does not have this feature. The "sales" videos are openly misleading. They show the webcam and a powerpoint together. It takes a lot of wasted time and wasted money to learn that CAMTASIA DOES NOT INCLUDE WEBCAM WHILE RECORDING. A WEBCAM STREAM CAN BE ADDED LATER DURING EDITING BUT IT IS CLUMSY, DIFFICULT, AND DOES NOT DO WHAT YOU WANT.

I am researching including WEBCAM inside a powerpoint presentation as an embeded "object". Has anybody figured that out ? ? ?

A solution for you - -

I set up the WEBCAM viewer (using Windows media encoder and Windows Media Player) as a Powerpoint Object. Then he webcam viewer shows up like any other object on the slide. That would SEEM to be good but - - There is a 10 second delay. The display is about 10 seconds behind the camera. I could not find a way to fix that. So pretty useless.

But, I found a work around that solves my need totally.

Use Powerpoint SLIDESHOW as the background for what you are recording. If you install the Csamtasia Add-ins for PowerPoint, then you can choose to display the Webcam Preview box WHILE YOU ARE RECORDING> You can drag the Preview anywhere including to a second display so it does not interfere with the C8 Recording frame.

ALSO, as a bonus, Powerpoint Slideshow has a nice drawing (Inking) capability with some features not found in C-8 drawing tool.

SO:

- install C8 Add in for Powerpoint.

- run PowerPoint

- Go to the ADD-IN menu and click on SHOW WEBCAM PREVIEW.

- In the same box, click on Record.
