Very angry - Unable to capture screenshots from video games

I am very angry.  I spent so much money on SnagIt for only one purpose, capturing screenshots from video games.   I mean Screenshots, NOT Video recording.  I have spent so many hours looking for a good software to do this.  Most software can only video record.

I have found HyperSnap that can record DirectX.   Then I found reviews that said SnagIt is the number one in capturing screenshots.  So I spent so much money on this.

the only advice I have found is running the game in Windowed Mode, and then maybe SnagIt will work.

NO  THIS IS NOT WHY I BOUGHT THIS @#!%$#@ PROGRAM.  HOW THE HELL DO I GET MY MONEY BACK?!

Hello Cosmos,

I'm sorry you are having trouble but we are here to help.

First, if you want a refund, you can look on this page to see the many ways to contact our Customer Service team. They can let you know what your options are:
http://blogs.techsmith.com/inside-techsmith/how-can-we-help-you-customer-service-at-techsmith/

If you would like help on getting the captures you need, perhaps let us know what you doing.
Are you trying to capture still images from a video game as the game is playing?

If yes, this might be very tricky since games tend to be very high motion. However, as your game is playing, if you press the capture hotkey on your keyboard, the action on the screen should freeze and you should be able to save that image as a capture. It should then automatically show up in the Editor for you.

If you are needing something else, perhaps let us know. Overall, it is very hard to give help without details.

Capturing exactly the right image from a SnagIt video recording in the Editor now seems trivial to me, and its quality much better than 'good enough'. If SnagIt has an issue, it's that its workflows are only 'obvious' when you know how; I struggled until I read that PDF and had a lightbulb moment. This only seems convoluted until you realise its far easier to capture images from a short video than to set up and capture exactly the right image on the fly.

Hi Michael,

Can you tell us what PDF helped you?

I agree it is a better and easier workflow to capture your video, then same images from the frames within the Editor.

Most video games take full control of your keyboard.

SnagIt's standard hot keys won't function as a result.  SnagIt cannot record video of a video game in full screen mode at all. It can capture a full screen game as a still image.

I programmed a SnagIt hot key into my G710 gaming keyboard to see what would happen. I ran a video game in full screen mode for my test.

My programmed key triggered a capture every time. The game screen froze while I initiated the capture but the video game kept right on playing with out me. I don't know why anyone would want to screw up a game they were playing just to capture a still Image of it.

It also switched the monitor back to the Desktop view after every capture. Then, I needed to click on the games icon from the taskbar to get it back onscreen.

I only did this out of curiosity and for the benefit of others. I was running a Windows 7 machine and SnagIt 12 at the time.

Regards, Joe

If you are wanting to record or take screesnshots of your video games, then you should get the Elgato. Not saying anything is wrong with Techsmith, but using the Elgato would be so much better. That is just what they do.

Plus, your very first post isn't very helpful, coming in here just bitching about "All this money you spent and it doesn't work right".. How about say what the issue is and see if anyone can help. It could be User error, it could be your pc has issues, it could be the game (like someone said) taking over the controls. SO, there are a lot of variables as to why something does not work, but, telling people what the issue is and aksing for help would just get you much more results.

All products that Techsmith makes are great and they are the best at what they do, but to me, if I was wanting to do Video game capture stuff, I would use the right tools for the job and use something like Elgato.

Not wishing to pour oil on the fire - but I was wondering what the purpose of the 30 day (?) unlimited functionality trial was ..   I always use these to ensure that a piece of software will

a. complete the key tasks that I am looking for - or at least as many as I find in my day to day working /playing for the EVALUATION period

b. play nicely with everything else that I already have installed

If it does all of this - I then make a purchasing decision based on price and functionality ..

I certainly don't rush into buying anything, even if there is a 30 day money back guarantee ... I've had enough problems with that approach in the past.  not from TS I hasten to add .. :-)

Just wondered!!
